  1. When I was a little kid I remember seeing lots of turntables that had speed-settings for 78, 45, 33 1/3, and 16 2/3. I remember asking about the lowest speed, but no one seemed to know what it was for, and I also never saw record for that speed. Since then, I've heard that it was for spoken-word analog discs, but they must have been uncommon, at least by the mid-60's. I was going to mention mini-(CD)discs, but several people beat me to it. As I recall, part of the reason that the format died quickly in the US was suspicion on the part of the consumer. A lot of people, myself included, were mighty leery of a new format being foisted on them by the recording industry barely 10 years after the introduction of the CD. As for 50's reel-to-reel, Art Pepper recorded some excellent material for "Omega-tape."
  2. Nice find! That's a really good one. Indeed, nice catch! And I thought finding my copy for $25 was a steal! Well tonight was my lucky night as I found "This is Tal Farlow" and "Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet Here and Now" both for $18!!! You mean a total of $18 or $18 each? Thinking back, I believe I got Impression Of A Patch Of Blue for $12, if memory serves. $18 for both!!!!!!!!!! $10 for the Farlow and $8 for the Jazztet! I yelled out NO WAY! in the store! Wow! I'm surprised a store employee didn't run up, grab them from your hands, and reprice them right there.
  3. What, no German or Japanese imports!! As for Dark Side of the Moon, I honestly never understood why people for so long made such a big deal about that album. It kind of struck me as one of those "show-off-your-stereo" albums.
  4. Am I alone in perceiving The Royal Tennenbaums to be, in part, an updated, cartoonified, (and cutesyfied) version of the Glass family?
  5. I've been going though the season one episodes of "Mad Men" lately, via Netflix. Just saw the episode "Shoot," the last one on disc three. I managed to completely miss this one on TV and it's a gem! More of a "stand-alone" episode (less "arcy" you might say), directed by Paul Feig. Draper is being courted by one of the really big Manhattan ad firms, and his wife Betty is enticed into returning to modeling. Great shot of the restored Los Angeles Theater in the beginning.
  6. Oh, God, that theme is burned into my brain! Oddly, though, I don't remember ever seeing "Hec Ramsey"---frankly, I'd be curious about it now, since getting into Boone's earlier show, "Have Gun, Will Travel." One thing that always puzzled me: Why did they call it the Sunday mystery "movie"? It wasn't a movie at all, it was a rotating roster of mystery TV shows, fer godsake! Looking back, "Columbo" was clearly the class act of the bunch. When I was a kid I also loved "McCloud" but years later I saw an episode and realized it wasn't really all that great.
  7. Yes, I remember upon moving to Boston there must have been a lot of Loews theaters in the city because I started seeing intro all the time, and audiences would actually sing along with it sometimes, which was actually kind of hilarious if you were there. It's like people were making fun of it and enjoying it at the same time.
  8. Sounded rushed. Did they have a train to catch?
  9. I guess this was for the "LSD-generation."
  10. The color Dragnet show used to have this logo.
  11. What happens when you drink and post, kids....

1,100 yen, isn't that close to $100? I don't want it THAT much.

  14. And Martial Solal was on piano. Mr. Cool.
  15. ...And there's Eubie Blake! Happy Birthday Mr. Jones.
  16. I used to have that Vintage "Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allen Poe." Great big huge paperback, but still didn't cost too much, by today's standards. Actually, I might still have it somewhere, in some box.
  17. I put it on my You Tube favorites list.
  18. So I guess it's good that I have all this stuff on vinyl...or does that even count anymore?
  19. Nice find! That's a really good one.
  20. Sorry if anybody's already mentioned this, but one factor in falling CD sales may be that we're currently going through the worst recession since the Great Depression.
  21. God bless that man.
  22. Just how classic ARE these sessions?

    Blue Note

I'd go along with what Claude says below for the various recent Concord re-issues, I don't think there is any "new" mastering done on these, but the Blue Note ones seem to be a little bit better most of the time, but the standard has dropped in other areas, notes, photo's in the booklet, etc. It's true, a lot of BN re-issues have gone back OOP lately. This is a bad time to be just starting to get into this music for that reason, although people keep telling me that nobody listens to CD's anymore. And how about re-issuing Duke Pearson's Wahoo!---I know I've said it a million times, but I would really like to get the thing.
