  1. I just saw what was essentially a Gretchen Wilson unplugged performance on CMT. She played a real nice Django-Grappelli "esque" ballad which really showcased her voice, her band, and in particular her violin player. Check it out. I'm sure CMT is playing the heck out of this 1 hour special.
  2. Went through a serious JB phase about a year ago. I'm about ready for another "dose". If your current listening habits are on the funky side don't forget about The Meters. Those guys can bring it! Re: Soul On Top, My Desire is just about perfect. The rest of the album is hit or miss for me depending on my mood. A worthy purchase though.
  3. DVD Details
  4. I would give it a shot. Nothing ventured.....
  5. Why not return it and buy the new one?
  6. This thread reminds me of something Pat Metheny said about improvisation which has always stuck with me... "Improvising on chord changes is a lot like giving a speech about a fairly complex subject matter using fairly complex grammar- there is no way you can just wing it, you have to have done a lot of research into the subject and have a pretty wide ranging vocabulary that makes the language and all it's potential available to you."
  7. Got it! Thanks again Lon.
  8. Up. I've been thinking about this the last couple of days. We've had some incredible finds released lately, but there is so much that has been lost to the ages.

    Phish Corner

Never really have never been able to get into Phish. I think their all fine musicians they just don't seem to do it for me. Every couple of years I give them a listen but nothing has really stuck yet. Maybe this tread will reawaken my interest and point me in the right direction. P.S. For me, the Derek Trucks Band heads up the post-Phish jam band scene. Absolute top of the heap! Oh yeah, that other band he plays in is pretty good too!
  10. Just in case your not already aware this looks like a good resource
  11. It is a nice scale. For lack of a better way to characterize the sound, it has a very warm, rich sounding middle eastern feel. I'll continue to work with it and let you know about any interesting developments.
  12. Don't stop there, the #5 awaits! Thanks for the spark.
  13. Just tried it about 10 minutes ago for the first time. A #4 substituted for the 4 also seems to work well. Don't know what got into me. Just trying to think outside the box I guess.
  14. Scalculate This Major Sus Pentatonic Scale Thingy? ← Whatever it is, when played over augmented triads rooted on the various scale degrees it creates some really interesting dissonance. Potentially, a nice colorful scale choice for use over augmented chords. Need to experiment with this more.
  15. Real good point. Village Green Preservation Society, Victoria, Waterloo Sunset, and a number of other Kinks songs have always conveyed a strong sense of what it means to be British to me.
  16. Yeah, I dig his stance on chords. When working with a busy keyboardist, I often have to just hit the chord tones (or less). Sometimes, I must even just play air guitar. ← It occurred to me that the ideas outlined in this article with respect to developing "sparse" accompaniment could also be applied by a soloist for just the opposite effect. I don't typically incorporate a lot of double stops or other intervals into my soloing, with the exception of octaves. This article opens up some rather obvious choices (at least in retrospect) for incorporating interval-based licks into solos. Funny how an article related to comping can give you ideas on constructing solo lines. You gotta love the journey! P.S. Keyboardists can be facists.

    JOS & TRANE

I'll have to pull out Groovin At Small's Paradise and give it a spin. Thanks for the tip.

    JOS & TRANE

    That's fairly ironic in retrospect.

    JOS & TRANE

...and Miles taught Ahmad Jamal everything he knows. So no truth regarding JOS and Trane?
  20. Giant Steps ala Stern Fairly interesting article by Mike Stern in the most recent GuitarPlayer magazine.
  21. You forgot one thing..... .... he makes some really cool guitar faces. Seriously, Jim's characterization is spot on IMO.

    JOS & TRANE

I've been rereading Miles (Miles with Quincy Troupe) and I noticed a reference on page 195 to Trane playing with JOS in 1955 (prior to "late" September to be a little more precise). I'm wondering if any recorded material exists? I realize this has probably been discussed before, however my searches of the site have turned up nothing. Additionally, I didn't see anything listed at jazzdisco.org. Thanks in advance for any information on this matter.
