  1. Discs 5 & 6 which feature music by Jay McShann, Julia Lee, Buddy Rich, Cootie Williams and early Professor Longhair
  2. Photos and details at: http://www.estatesales.net/estate-sales/NY/Port-Washington/11050/669141
  3. For the record The Butler didn't win any major awards, it didn't get a single Oscar or Golden Globe nomination and the critics didn't like it either, it has a 47 metacritic score. Thanks for setting the record straight. It's been years since I lost interest in all award shows, so I really don't follow who wins at them. I somehow had the idea that this film was an award winner. I am very happy to be informed that is not the case!
  4. This is an actual job listing from Craigslist. In case the listing is deleted once a lucky applicant has been hired, here is the job description in full: Deliver Burrito to office daily (palo alto) Pick up a burrito every business day from Chipotle and deliver to office nearby (<5 minutes away) in Palo Alto. The burrito will be preordered so it should only take a minute in line to get. I will also be providing you with a gift card loaded with an amount for 5 pickups preloaded weekly and monitored online. $10 dollar per delivery. About 15-18minutes of work. Flexible on what time the delivery would be if it is between the range of 12:00pm and 1:30pm at a consistent timing each day. I will share a calendar with you of days that it will not be needed if that is the case with 24 hours notice. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/etc/4557345334.html
  5. I don't know what the production connection might be between these two series, but I noticed characters in each series eat the "Let's" brand of potato chips. I avoided this, it looked like something as manipulative as Forrest Gump. No thanks. Forrest Gump was better. Sounds like I made the right decision! Forrest Gump goes into my "technically well-made piece of shit" category. That is exactly the category in which The Butler belongs. I can't believe Hollywood still feels compelled to lavish tons of awards on such simple-minded, manipulative drivel.
  6. What is the Ahmad Jamal album in this collection like?
  7. At a previous job, I was involved in that Meth Project ad. There was a whole series of them, each in a 30 second and a 15 second format. I had to add a different tag/logo (for various US state Meth Project affiliates) at the end of each ad and then encode them for online use, for HD broadcast use, etc. Everyday for a couple of weeks I had to look at those ads over and over.
  8. I'm not sure how he looks like today, but I really did think he looked good with his hair like this.
  9. Recently finished The Pillows vs. Blankets episodes were great. Now watching
  10. In which John Waters hitchhikes from his home in Baltimore to San Francisco. The book is divided into three sections: first, he imagines the best possible adventures this trip might bring; second, he imagines the worst possible adventures which might occur; third, he relates the trip as it actually happened. I'm in the first part now and it's quite entertaining as he imagines being picked up by (among others) a prison escapee being pursued by the police, a demolition derby driver who takes him along for the ride during a competition, an underground carnival in which he is put to work in the freak show as "The Man With No Tattoos", and in a very sweet chapter, he is picked up by Edith "Egg Lady" Massey, an iconic actress featured in several of Mr. Waters' films and who, in this account at least, faked her own death to escape the film world and now runs a second hand convenience store in Hermann, Missouri.
  11. Etta Jones has just never done it for me. She has her fans, so obviously it's my issue, not hers. However, the mere sound of her voice simply makes me cringe, iyt is so painful to my ear. It is a visceral reaction that I have had with no other singer. There have been more than a few Houston Person CDs that I had to pass on just because she appeared on a track or two.
  12. Well of course, Ella Fitzgerald was truly one of a kind -- head and shoulders above the fingernails on a chalkboard type screeching that Etta Jones specialized in.
  13. Joe Pass recorded a few duo albums with Ella Fitzgerald for Pablo. While Ms. Fitzgerald's voice was beginning to show it age by that time, their album Again is very good and Take Love Easy is quite nice.
  14. Unless I overlooked them in the long list of past honorees, some notable names I'd surely include as "Jazz Masters" would be: Gerald Wilson Dick Hyman Bob Wilber Mark Murphy Sir Charles Thompson
  15. The AAJ website is still up and running with news, reviews, articles, etc. Just the Forum seems to have disappeared.
  16. It's entirely plausible that he purchased them from the record company (and probably for a very sweet price).
  17. Andy Bey, but ......... ....not like Jimmy! Nancy Wilson could -- and did -- but she is retired now.
