  1. I have all of them except "Silver's Blue" and "Silver's Serenade". All of them are good. If I had to choose one, I'd go with "Cape Verdean Blues". To me, its the most "interesting" session of them all. Like other posters have mentioned, it sounds more "modern" than typical Horace Silver dates, and Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson, as well as JJ Johnson on the second half, absolutely tear it up. Plus, it has "Nutville"!!!
  2. If Bol thinks that Coltrane needed an "editor", I don't think the Vanguard set would sit very well with him. Although, I agree with you on Live At Birdland, which I was just listening to this morning. Your Lady, what a brilliant tune!!! Bol, one more suggestion I would make is Ballads. Low key, and all the tunes are in the 3-4 minute range. It's an incredibly beautiful album. If Bol thinks Trane needed an editor, would anything on Impulse, or from that whole era, work? Strangely, I've always found Trane to be one of the only guys who could still sound intresting after all those choruses. His ideas never ended, and they were almost always good ideas!
  3. ...that dude should be in the "pokey"!!! All you Colts fans better hope he doesn't bring his guns to Miami!!
  4. Tank Johnson will be joining his team in Miami. Had us scared s**tless over here for a while.
  5. Like kulu se mama said, if you really, really need the money, then return it. Otherwise, given the fact that you said you got a good price, even if you haven't warmed up to trane yet, I'd keep it. This is some incredible music, and if one day you all of a sudden start hearing a special "something" in trane's music that you haven't heard before, you won't want to be without this stuff. For my money, trane at the peak of his powers as he is here is quite simply some of the most amazing recorded music in the history of the world. Here's hoping that at some point, that it works for you. Trane is a universe of wonder and joy.
  6. Thanks for your replies! I think I'll be picking up seasons 7 & 8 and will slowly work backwards. I need that Christian rock episode. That was too funny.
  7. I love A.I!
  8. I hadn't thought of it like that, Scott, but yes....when I think about it, it is reminiscent of Blade Runner in its dark tone and message about the future. However, I think this film is better. Its much better paced, and it ultimately plants a small seed of hope in the viewer despite the pessimism of the future, unlike the Blade Runner directors cut, which makes one want to reach for the fifth of Jack.
  9. Since there's quite a few threads going around about the excellent new releases currently in theaters, I want to make sure that this film doesn't get swept under the carpet. This film was astonishing.....the story was interesting, but the way this film is presented is where it really shines. Everything is so believable, both in its visual presentation as well as its concept of the not-so-distant future. On a technical level, this is one of the best films to come around in a long time, but the film has so much heart as well. Performances are excellent all around. See this one!!
  10. This one and Iwo Jima are next on my list, as is Almodovar's "Volver".
  11. Stick around long enough and pay attention to the direction some of our discussions take, particulary in the Politics forum. Blue Note apparently wanted none of that. I don't agree with they way they handled it, but I can sort of understand.
  12. Last I heard, he was living down in the Carolinas somewhere, and I believe he was involved with a bricking company.
  13. Sal and I just bet the March RVGs on this.....I hope I don't have to buy them twice.....but I don't think I will! m~ Don't worry, Mark, CD Universe will make it very cheap for you. Plus, just think of how much you'll be supporting Organissimo when you order them twice using the search engines above!
  14. I will be seeing this one this weekend. I've heard nothing but great things about it. And its good to hear that its superior to "Flags of our Fathers", which was a very decent, yet mildly disappointing film.
  15. I got here a couple of months after the Blue Note board shut down. Was on AAJ quite often at the time and kept hearing about this board. This is a wonderful, interesting, and at times very funny place Welcome!
  16. This is going to be an exciting Super Bowl. I don't think the fact that the BEARS are going to the big game has really sunk in yet. This is a dream come true. Best of luck to all you Colts fans out there (Mark, Rachel, and everyone else)! You guys have a great team and deserve your trip to Miami. Two weeks left.....let the s**t talking begin!
  17. Just checked the score......hopefully, bring on the Colts!
  18. I love it. Everybody picked the Saints. The Bears wiped their asses with the Saints. Bring on the Patriots.
  19. Nope, he'll be rooting for Ricky Manning Jr.
  20. I've been a casual viewer of South Park since it began, but lately I've found myself watching it almost every night on Comedy Central because the episodes seem to be so much funnier than they used to be. I'm assuming the episodes are newer because they reference people/events that are more recent. I've been thinking about picking up a couple of seasons on DVD, but not sure where to go? Any opinions on which seasons were the best? I saw an episode where Cartmen forms a Christian rock band that had me close to pissing myself...would love to have that one in the collection!
  21. I purchased it around the time it first came out. If you don't already have the material, I'd say its absolutely essential....one of my favorite Mosaic Selects. I had never heard Dizzy Reece before getting that set, and I was blown away. All the music is good.
  22. ... Aric, hopefully this is all in good fun. We will stop if you want... Guy

    1956 Coltrane

I generally agree with Dan's assessment. Some players might have picked up on him and extended his tenor work, but he obviously wouldn't have had the wide-spread influence that he's had to date. He would have remained a rather shadowy underground fugure (another name that comes to mind is Tina Brooks). As for the second question, I don't think jazz "styles" would be much different, but they would have a different inflection or a somewhat different color. Jazz wouldn't have the distinctive and pervasive 'Trane sound; maybe it would be more reflective of Sonny Rollins or Ornette Coleman or Miles Davis particular sound. It seems to me that what 'Trane did was to take what others did first and and extend it to its logical conclusion (or maybe to the breaking point). In other words, complicated bop was being played before Giant Steps, modes and soloing with mininal harmonic motion were being explored at length before the Village Vanguard, free jazz was around before Ascension. Jazz was already going in a certain direction and was going there inevitably and Trane grabbed the pieces and went with them full-bore. That's not to diminish his importance at all. In fact, it's incredible that he could do what he did in 10-12 years after he hit his stride. 'Trane was the person in in whom all these threads culminated, and so naturally he's the one people are drawn to and emulate (especially saxophone players to whom "Trane's technique and intensity is awe-inspiring). What I'm saying is that I think Coltrane's is a bigger influence on the sound of today's jazz rather than the styles of jazz. All the above "styles" would still be with us but played with a somewhat different sound. Very well put. I tend to agree with all of that, except for the first paragraph. I think his work with Miles' first quintet would have sealed his place as a legendary player. We can't know how large his reputation and influence would have become, but he (imo) would certainly have remained a much larger figure than someone like Tina Brooks.
