  1. Eric Alexander / Harold Mabern Quartet at the Jazz Showcase tomorrow night.
  2. I saw Borat last night. First off, I think the film was brilliant. I don't recall ever laughing so hard in a movie theater in my entire life. But what was so strange, is that the film is EXTREMELY disturbing as well. Some of the people he has encounters with are truly frightening. I found myself missing certain parts of the film because I was laughing so hard from a previous segment, and then almost immediately afterwards I'd be so disturbed that I didn't know what to do. Without giving anything away, the parts I found most disturbing involved a group of upper-class Christians around a dinner table, a crowd at a rodeo, an Evangelical church, and a motor home full of college frat boys. This is one of the most effective pieces of stinging social commentary that has been put to film in quite some time, yet at the same time, if you are not a sensitive, easily offended personality type, its easily one of the funniest movies ever made.
  3. Excellent group to see live!
  4. Power to the People!!
  5. Yeah, yeah........
  6. I'm about to throw my wine bottle through my f**king TV.
  7. Noj and Weizen, agree with you both. Heineken in Amsterdam is gorgeous, but tastes completely skunky over here. And before I went to Amsterdam, I didn't even know Amstel existed! Another wonderful European concoction.
  8. Try a Dave Liebman/Ellery Eskelin disc called "Different but the Same" on Hathut. His drumming on there is incredible.
  9. Somewhat unrelated, but I was in Ireland last month for a little over a week. All I can say is that I will never drink Guinness here in the states again. Used to love it, but now it tastes flat and sterile. Guinness in Ireland is like a glass of heaven. Some beers just shouldn't be exported. Anyways, carry on! I'm interested in trying this "Bare Knuckle Stout".
  10. I noticed that Cadence didn't get the new ones as well. That is too bad. I agree with Late that they've been the best place in the US to get hats. Lots of sales and such, with fast shipping and good selection.
  11. 11/9 !! Could be a never ending coupon...
  12. Just picked up "Ne Plus Ultra", "We See", and "Even the Sounds Shine" from Cadence for $14 a disc. A great deal! Thanks to all who posted. I'll be picking up more of these in the future.
  13. I vote for Grandmaster Flash.
  14. I was spinning disc 3 of the Dizzy Reece Select last night, and was wondering why he doesn't get more acclaim than he does. He has one of the most beautiful, big and brassy tones I've ever heard, and is a fantastic improvisor on top of that. Also, his compositions are really interesting. LOVE that tune "Sands".
  15. Hi Greg, I was thinking about giving you a call about the show. I'll be in for the entire weekend; let's touch base as it gets a little closer! m~ Will do, Mark. My wife and I are now confirmed for the Friday night show. Sal, it'll be good to see you again. Indeed it will, Greg. Looking forward to it.
  16. I must say, I am shocked that Max Roach's name came up in this thread.
  17. This guy is Vanilla ice reincarnated.
  18. Thanks for the feedback. I'll add the Carter / Bradford to my wishlist as well! Sounds like a good date.
  19. Carl Allen bores the hell out of me.
  20. I'll be there too! REALLY looking forward to this one.
  21. how was the rollins' concert? It was great! This was the third time I have seen him perform. The first time was really good, but the second time was disappointing with a little too much solo space for percusionist Kimati Dinizulu. This time he had the usual group, but with Kobie Watkins on drums and Bobby Broom on guitar, which seemed to add a different kind of spark to Sonny. He only played 90 minutes, but it was a solid 90 minutes. His tune selection leaned pretty heavy towards the new CD Sonny, Please. Wow....Kobie Watkins on drums! Good for him. He's moving up in the world, and he deserves it.
  22. Hello all, I'm planning on taking an extended break from buying jazz CDs in order to take time to enjoy and further absorb what I already have. Before I do this, however, I was in interested in possibly purchasing some Hathut items that have been intriguing me for a while. Can anyone provide some feedback on the following recordings if you've heard them? Warne Marsh - Ne Plus Ultra Steve Lacy - We See: Thelonious Monk Songbook Steve Lacy - The Way Cecil Taylor - The Eighth Myra Melford - Even the Sounds Shine Daniele D'Agaro - Chicago Overtones Anthony Braxton - Charlie Parker Project Thanks in advance!
