  1. This is so sad. He was such a kind, knowledgeable guy. I always enjoyed engaging in good discussions with him over at AAJ. This is terrible. Condolences to his family & friends. My god....
  2. Thelonious Alone in San Francisco is another one that was not in the sale.
  3. Looks like I need to go back and check out those early studio releases. I thought that "Hot Rocks" pretty much had the essential material from that period covered. Looks like I was wrong!
  4. I think "A Bigger Bang" is vastly superior to "Bridges to Babylon" and "Voodoo Lounge", which are the only two post-Tattoo You albums I've heard. But I don't think its on the level of their great early seventies albums. But then again, not much is.
  5. Am I missing any essential Rolling Stones studio albums? Below is my list: Hot Rocks Between the Buttons Beggars Banquet Let it Bleed Sticky Fingers Exile on Main Street Some Girls Tattoo You A Bigger Bang Thanks for your feedback.
  6. You didn't imagine it....Wallace Rooney sometimes plays a trumpet that Miles gave him. I don't know the first thing about trumpets, but do remember that part of the trumpet is blue.
  7. I don't care much for the Bad Plus. But I've heard some recordings with him in a more conventional jazz setting, and he strikes me as a really creative player. This one should be good....the idea of younger, more creative players like Iverson and Turner playing with a master drummer like Billy Hart sounds appealing.
  8. Yeah, I thought so too when I read the lineup. I guess that the group was originally billed as the Mark Turner/Ethan Iverson Quartet, but after 1 night playing with Billy, they immediately turned over the leadership role and renamed the group after him.
  9. Anyone heard this yet? Features Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson and Ben Street. Sounds like an excellent band, and the disc got a glowing review over at AAJ. On my short list. Any feedback?
  10. 9 for me. Only regret buying one of them.
  11. Is it really spamming? I just see it as an album review. And he's not exactly praising the new Stanko album either....sounds like a 5 out of 10 review to me.
  12. I've enjoyed the last two discs he's put out with his new band. They sound really good together. I'm looking forward to seeing him play in Chicago this October.
  13. I've dabbled in Paul's music from time to time, but never really got into his post "Graceland" stuff. However, I picked up his new album based on all the positive press its been getting, and after one spin, I can say that its one of the best non-jazz CD's I've purchased in quite some time. Need to give it some more spins, but what caught my ear right away is how musicialy diverse it is, yet each song sounded very interesting and held my interest the whole way tough. Has anyone heard this? I'd be interested to hear some feedback on this one.
  14. My reaction to his music is similar to when I first heard Johnny Lang about 10 years ago. Definitely some talent there, but not much to say....at least not yet.
  15. Yeah, if anyone has any thoughts on "The Source", please post. The sound clips sound facinating.
  16. Has anyone heard "The Source"? Its a new release on ECM, and I believe Trygve Seim is in the group.
  17. What Bol said about the rhythm sections.
  18. And he's bringing Mark Turner and Jeff Ballard! I can't wait for that one. Sorry Joe!
  19. Bitches Brew was my first too, about 8 or 9 years ago. Not an ideal introduction to his music, but a PERFECT introduction to jazz for an open minded pot smoking Deadhead college student like I was.

    Jack DeJohnette

One of the finest drummers I've ever heard, and a nice guy too.
  21. Anyone check this out yet? Saw it this past weekend and loved it! One of the few horror movies in recent memory to actually generate and sustain real tension for an extended amount of time. One of my biggest gripes about horror films of recent years (other than the fact that so few are rated R) is that they seem to rely too heavily on the "made you jump" types of scares so typical in the 80's slasher movies. While "The Decent" does use these at times, it never relies on them....it actually creates a real feeling of dread established by the story and claustrophobic atmosphere. DEFINITELY not a movie for kids. Lots of gore (but never used just for the sake of using it) and some very disturbing images. Fans of the horror genere need to check this one out. edit: correction for stupid spelling error
  22. I think she's good looking, and was good in the suprisingly entertaining "Mean Girls", but other than that, she doesn't really occupy my thoughts.
  23. A new Vonski album....always good news!
