  1. Picked up the Byrd, Griffin and Dorham last month, and I've got the McLean, Morgan, Hutcherson and Hubbard on the way. "Royal Flush" was really an eye opener. Its quickly become my favorite Byrd session. Byrd's sessions, while consistantly solid, typically don't exceed the status of "typical BN hard bop" for me, but Royal Flush is really something special.

    Roy Hargove

I've seen Roy several times live. I think he's an extremely talented and original soloist, and his rhythm section burns. But I share your sentiments about Justin Robinson. Just too academic for me. He tries to play as many notes as he can in as many different patterns as possible, and doesn't really seem to be speaking from the heart. I can work with this in the live setting, but not too sure how this will work on record.
  3. How about a tune or two from "Inventions & Dimensions"?
  4. Cowboys have some receivers this year, but need a QB who can tell which jerseys belong to which team. MF Bledsoe threw 3 INTs yesterday to cost us the game v. Jacksonville. One more game like that and I think the Tony Romo era will begin in Dallas. Plus, you don't want T.O to start bitching, or that's gonna screw everything up.
  5. My Bears are looking really good against the Packers so far. May be speaking too soon, but for the first time in probably two years, I'm actually getting excited watching the offense.
  6. Squirrels eat each other sometimes.
  7. No doubt about that!!!

    Sonny Rollins

Had to think about this for a minute, but I'm gonna go wth "Freedom Suite" as the best fifties session. Edit for spelling

    Sonny Rollins

For the sixtes, my vote goes to "East Broadway Rundown".
  10. Bentsy, right now, the schedules aren't all up for shows that far in advance. Unfortunately, you'll be missing Tomasz Stanko, who plays at the Hot House on the 18th. You should be able to catch a show at the Jazz Showcase that Sunday, the 15th. Not sure whose playing yet. PM me closer to your trip and I'll try to meet up with you as well, particularly if you plan on going to the showcase on Sunday.
  11. The crazy thing is that there's a good amount of people on this board who fall for it.
  12. Reeds and Deeds - "Cookin' " - w/ Eric Alexander, Grant Stewart, David Hazeltine, John Webber and Joe Farnsworth Dave Kikoski Quartet - "Limits" - w/ Seamus Blake, Larry Grenadier and Bill Stewart David Binney - "Cities and Desire" - w/ Mark Turner, Craig Taborn, Thomas Morgan and Dan Weiss I'm very interested in the David Binney disc. I thought his last one on Criss Cross, "Bastion of Sanity", was one of the finest releases from Criss Cross in quite some time.
  13. I think that I agree with king ubu on this one. How many jazz tunes "steal" the changes from other tunes that came before? If you apply the same mentality to jazz, that would cut out alot of great jazz from your life.
  14. A couple of the final sessions (chronologically) from the box set strike me as a bit sub par, sounding a bit like they were trying too hard to ride the fusion wave. But those comprise maybe one and a half discs worth of material at most. There's still at least a good six discs worth of stellar stuff here IMO, and this set shouldn't be missed.
  15. And without trying to get political, I thought "An Inconvenient Truth" was very well done and quite eye-opening.
  16. I'm a big fan of documentaries. There are so many that I've enjoyed. Here are three recent ones that I've seen and highly recommend: Grizzly Man The Fog of War American Movie
  17. I still think Vonski qualifies, as does Fred Anderson. True heroes of Chicago!
  18. I'm glad I have both sets! They are both excellent and worth owning IMO.
  19. I think I listened to it once, and never played it again. Remember thinking it was OK, but wasn't really affected by it either way. Will give it another spin soon.
  20. Picked up this difficult-to-find disc at Roscoe's show this past Friday.....its excellent!
  21. The Pharcyde - Bizzare Ride II the Pharcyde
  22. I always thought it was the plain ol' studio version? The electric keyboards on there sound identical to the sample from the beat.
  23. Thanks DatDere. Tribe Called Quest used jazz sampling very effectively. I loved their reworking of "Red Clay" on "Sucka Nigga" from the same album. Good to hear that they are touring again. Perhaps a new album is in the works? Hip hop could sure use them...
  24. Do you know the name of the Tribe song that used the sample?

    Andrew Hill space

At the Chicago Jazz Festival on Friday, Jason Moran mentioned how Andrew Hill is "sick", and wanted people to keep Andrew in their thoughts. He sounded very nervous and uneasy while speaking of this. I know Andrew's health has been affecting him more recently, but has anyone heard any more recent updates? The way Moran was talking, it sounded like Andrew is really not doing well at all......
