    Dewey Left Town!

Very sad news. Thanks for the beautiful sounds, Dewey. RIP.
  2. If you have the time, do it. Guadalupe Natl Park is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
  3. Had a really nice couple of days down at the Jazz Festival! Got to the city on Friday night and met up with sheldonm, jazzshrink, rachel and Joe G at the HotHouse for Roscoe Mitchell's show. He put on a great show. There were moments in the first set where he seemed a bit tired but the second set he just killed it. Lots of brilliant improvisation and moments of peak intensity. I headed back down on Saturday for the Grant Park festivities, and we got to see the Dana Hall Quintet, featuring Tim Warfield, Steve Wilson, Ron Perillo and Dennis Carol. They played mostly Dana Hall original compositions, and the band sounded excellent. They are coming out with an album this fall, so really looking forward to that. Afterwards, I caught Jason Moran and the Bandwagon w/ special guest Bunky Green on alto. Another excellent show. Bunky fit in really nicely the Bandwagon, and the show was full of energy. The Joe Lovano Nonet closed off the show with a hard swinging, brilliant show, where they played tracks of of the new Nonet album "Streams of Expression". Its was my first time seeing Lovano, and I enjoyed his stage presence as well as the playing of him and his excellent band. Almost as good as the music and the company was the abslutely beautiful weather. This weekend has been in the mid seventies and mostly sunny the entire time! Wish I could make it out tonight to see Willie Pickens' birthday celebration as well as Joey D and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Hopefully someone will report back about how those shows were.
  4. Saw it for $18.99, so I'm going to wait for a Borders coupon.
  5. Just got this one.....really nice disc. A quieter disc, with these musicians making really good use of space. Some very moving solos from Turner and Iverson. One of the better new releases this year IMO.
  6. I've never heard "Clubhouse", but I'm a big fan of Dexter's 1960s Blue Note sessions. How does this one measure up? Haven't heard much talk about this one.
  7. Because if the shows get around, more people will know about Organissimo, which will draw more fans to the shows, which in turn makes the band more successful, which will eventually help record sales. Its a simple idea really.....I don't know why all newer / more unknown bands don't go that route.
  8. Several times I've heard OK Computer called "the 'Dark Side Of the Moon' for this era" or some such. This makes me not want to get it, as I've always loathed Dark Side. Never understood why it became such an icon as it's such a lousy album. Maybe it's a 'have to listen to it stoned' thing. This is the first time in my life I've ever heard "Dark Side of the Moon" called a "lousy album"!! I don't think there's any similarity between Dark Side and OK Computer other than they are both concept albums from British rock bands.
  9. Let me get this straight ... you're coming to the band's board to ask for a copy of a show? Their next project is going to be a concert CD. What say you wait until you can pay for the music? Not sure if Organissimo allows it, but alot of bands nowadays allow taping of the show, and the recordings are circulated on the trading circuit or the internet. I don't think she meant any harm.
  10. I wish I could make it to your session with Lee Konitz, Larry. Unfortunately, due to both my job and my new residence out in Aurora, I'm not going to be able to make it into the city until Friday night. Hope to see you around the Jazz Fest!
  11. It seems like there will be quite a few of us Organissimo folks at the Hot House on Friday night. I know sheldonm will be there, as perhaps will jazzshrink (if he's not at the hotel taking a power nap). Should be fun!
  12. Just got through my first listen, and I am really, really happy with this one. Its a powerful album. I have to give it a few more listens to be sure, but its sounding like this is my favorite of his "trilogy", which also encompasses "Time Out of Mind" and "Love & Theft".
  13. I was listening to Short Dawg back in jr. high! Can't believe he's still going! I like the new song, aside from the annoying chorus.
  14. Roscoe Mitchell is going to play at the Hot House (36 E. Balbo) Friday after all the Grant Park activities. Also, the Jazz Showcase and Velvet Lounge always host after fest jam sessions the entire weekend. Not sure if you are familiar with these venues, but if your tastes are more of the mainstream, straight ahead stuff, the Jazz Showcase will suit nicely, as Ira Sullivan always hosts some great jam sessions. If your tastes are more towards the avant garde, the Velvet will work for you. Some great players have shown up to these jam sessions hosted by the great Fred Anderson.
  15. Shocked to hear this news!
  16. Had to think about this one for a while. Its an excellent album! I went with side 1.

    Dewey and Joshua Redman

Can't answer your question, JazzKat, but "Beyond" is my favorite of Joshua's recordings.
  18. I don't know what it is about those JJ sessions, but they are just really special. I never knew I could enjoy a trombone quartet so much!
  19. Just don't sleep through the good shows this year, and wake up for the likes of artists like Marcus Strickland!
  20. Unfortunately, I'll be working on Friday while Organissimo is tearing it up on Jackson, but I hope to see everyone on Saturday. I'll be hanging around Grant Park pretty much all day.
  21. Billy Cox was definitely a better fit, IMO. Love "Mabry" and the whole Files album. One of my favorites!
  22. I find Ralph Alessi to be an interesting player. Of the players mentioned, I probably enjoy Ron Horton, Dave Douglas, Terel Stafford and Jeremy Pelt the most.
  23. My booklet doesn't have this error, but it does credit Donald Byrd with writing "Mamacita".... Meanwhile, this might be my favorite Kenny Dorham session. Tommy Flanagan sounds great, and Joe Henderson plays his ass off as usual. The proceedings seem to inspire Kenny's playing quite a bit.
  24. Amazingly, this sale provided me with my first listen ever to Wes Montgomery's "Full House". I never really got into Wes' music, but this record was a revelation. Really excellent stuff! Some of the best Johnny Griffin I've ever heard on record.
  25. I have no idea, but the K2 sounds great!
