  1. We got to see Batise play "Evidence" with the trio. It was really something. Curtis Fuller mentioned how not many young cats are showing much influence from Monk in their playing. But Batise shows alot of promise.
  2. Nice pics, Mark! I was at the show, and I thought it killed! Maurice Brown was excellent, as was the young pianist.
  3. Tomorrow night is the Louis Hayes Quintet featuring Curtis Fuller, Ivan Taylor, Jon Batise and Maurice Brown!!
  4. Maybe 3 or 4 years ago, I saw the Freebop band down in Bronzeville, and I remember Malachi giving a speech about how he's always been inspired by movie soundtracks, particulary the old movies with really memorable main themes. He spoke about how certain jazz musicians have always been able to turn movie tunes (citing "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "My Favorite Things" in particular) into very effective vehicles for improvisation. He spoke about how this is something you hardly ever see these days, which is surprising since there have been some really great songs coming from modern films. He then proceeded to launch into a 3/4 arrangement of the Harry Potter theme music that was just incredible. Malachi and Billy Harper played some excellent solos, and then Gary Bartz stepped up and threw down a solo that brought the entire place to its feet. It was one of those unforgettable musical moments that don't happen too often.
  5. My god....this is really sad. I got the chance to see Malachi many times around Chicago over the years, and had several opportunities to speak to him as well. He was always very cool. R.I.P.
  6. Just 4 for me
  7. Well, he's had an assistant, Maureen Sickler?, around for about twenty years. I should think she could take over with that amount of experience, couldn't she? MG Mmm, does that mean it will be the MS series, or will the "ghost" concept extend from bands to mastering engineers ? This already happens with the Grateful Dead's valut releases (Dick's Picks). "Dick" has been dead for years.
  8. This was a big improvement over the original issue.
  9. I thought it was funny, but not hilarous. And most girls I've spoken to have loved t.
  10. Really enjoy this one. However, this one and "Song X" are the only Metheny-led sessions that have ever really done anything for me.
  11. More so than Joey D's new release?? That shit is HOT, and I'm not even a huge fan of the B-3!
  12. I believe both are regular issues. Cool, thanks Chuck. I'll be picking both of them up regardless.
  13. Can anyone tell me if the copies of Art Pepper's "Winter Moon" and Bill Evans' "At Shelly's Manne Hole" are the K2s or the regular OJC's? The copies of the covers are not showing up on my screen. Thanks!
  14. Rest in peace, Syd. How sad this is...
  15. The K2's had the best sound, IMO. I'm sad to see them go.
  16. OK, just sprung for the Trio cd. Will post thoughts once I get it. 17. Ouch....that's $52 for the three CD's! Guess that's not terrible since it is Roscoe Mithell after all. Not many other sax players I'd rather hear. I may just go ahead and spring for just the trio disc. The quintet disc has Corey Wilkes on it!!
  18. REALLY, REALLY want this disc, but 24 Euros plus shipping?
  19. Why did this thread have to be revived? I've been successfully (but not easily) resisting it since it came out. This is not making my life any easier.
  20. Can you please post a link? I'm not getting anything on Rogue Art by doing internet searches.... Thanks!
  21. Sorry to hear that, Mark.
  22. If I've had a disc for a number of years, have given it several serious listens, and still don't find myself returning to it on a regular basis, its gone. Unless its a Mosaic.

    William Parker

I love William's stuff too. He's one of the best contemporary jazz artists out there. I've purchased probalby 6 or 7 of his CDs in the past few years, but the one that sticks out for me is "Scrapbook". Love that one.
  24. What a day!!! I was expecting to take the afternoon off of work on Wednesday to watch England vs. Brazil. What a shocker.
  25. Will Crouch save them?
