  1. This board never ceases to amaze me. Thanks Joe and Chuck!
  2. 1. There was an episode of the old school Hanna-Barbara "Tom & Jerry" cartoons where Jerry lives inside a grand piano. There is then a concert in which Tom is the pianst, and begins to play while Jerry is inside the piano sleeping. Jerry begins having a really hard time with the music and the episode proceeds to Tom & Jerry having a war with each other all while Tom is playing some piano concerto. Does anybody remember this episode and know what piece that was that Tom was playing? And if you do, can you recommend a good recording of it? 2. What is a good recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"? Thanks!
  3. He's been at the Jazz Showcase at least twice in that time, and I went once. He'll probably be back there pretty soon. It's the main place he plays when in Chicago. Eric I guess that makes sense. I didn't go to the Showcase until around 2001. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
  4. I didn't really care for it. Strange thing, is that I can't really find much fault with the film (I didn't read the PKD story), but something just didn't click.
  5. I'm very jealous. Along with Paul Motian, Andrew is the artist I want to see perform before I die. As far as I know, as long as I've been into jazz (about 8 years or so) he hasn't performed in Chicago, which surprises me, becuase he's originally from here.
  6. Getthing to this thread somewhat late. I'm very sorry to hear this news, Free for All.
  7. Roscoe is a true giant of this music. We are blessed to have him on this planet with us today.
  8. Pax and Andrew! are both absolutely worth getting immediately. Some of the best music ever IMO.
  9. Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame has an excellent new solo album out called "The Eraser". The sound of the music is from the Kid A / Amnesiac school, but this one is much easer listening IMO.
  10. Got this e-mail from Margaret Davis. Can't wait!! Dear all, I just got off the phone with the great Fred Anderson, and there's wonderful news: Concerts will begin this Friday, July 28th, 2OO6 at the Velvet Lounge at its new location, 67 East Cermak Road betw. Michigan & Wabash in the City of Chicago's historic Motor Row District, just around the corner and within sight of the old Velvet Lounge location! The phone number at the new space is the same as before: 312-791-9O5O. It's not the grand opening yet (that will be in a few more weeks), but Fred wants to start having music in the new space as sort of test runs so he can discover and perfect any remaining flaws and see if there's anything still needed there that might have been overlooked. Fred was in the new space when I spoke with him, and he sounds very happy. Everyone please come out and celebrate and support Fred Anderson, a true hero for all time, in the culmination of this long, drawn-out, very difficult transition that was forced on him.
  11. That's good to know! Buying from Rouge Art is expensive, although I have to say this Roscoe CD was worth the 24 Euros. You should get this one. Done!! Man, this board must be the best thing to happen to the jazz music industry in quite some time. Enjoy the disc!

  13. EXCELLENT music!!
  14. That must be the best outdoor venue in the world!!!
  15. Congrats!! You won't regret it.
  16. We got to see Batise play "Evidence" with the trio. It was really something. Curtis Fuller mentioned how not many young cats are showing much influence from Monk in their playing. But Batise shows alot of promise.
  17. Nice pics, Mark! I was at the show, and I thought it killed! Maurice Brown was excellent, as was the young pianist.
  18. Tomorrow night is the Louis Hayes Quintet featuring Curtis Fuller, Ivan Taylor, Jon Batise and Maurice Brown!!
  19. Maybe 3 or 4 years ago, I saw the Freebop band down in Bronzeville, and I remember Malachi giving a speech about how he's always been inspired by movie soundtracks, particulary the old movies with really memorable main themes. He spoke about how certain jazz musicians have always been able to turn movie tunes (citing "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "My Favorite Things" in particular) into very effective vehicles for improvisation. He spoke about how this is something you hardly ever see these days, which is surprising since there have been some really great songs coming from modern films. He then proceeded to launch into a 3/4 arrangement of the Harry Potter theme music that was just incredible. Malachi and Billy Harper played some excellent solos, and then Gary Bartz stepped up and threw down a solo that brought the entire place to its feet. It was one of those unforgettable musical moments that don't happen too often.
  20. My god....this is really sad. I got the chance to see Malachi many times around Chicago over the years, and had several opportunities to speak to him as well. He was always very cool. R.I.P.
  21. Just 4 for me
  22. Well, he's had an assistant, Maureen Sickler?, around for about twenty years. I should think she could take over with that amount of experience, couldn't she? MG Mmm, does that mean it will be the MS series, or will the "ghost" concept extend from bands to mastering engineers ? This already happens with the Grateful Dead's valut releases (Dick's Picks). "Dick" has been dead for years.
  23. This was a big improvement over the original issue.
  24. I thought it was funny, but not hilarous. And most girls I've spoken to have loved t.
  25. Really enjoy this one. However, this one and "Song X" are the only Metheny-led sessions that have ever really done anything for me.
