  1. Why? IMO, there are few comtemporary jazz musicians who can hold a candle to the guys you've been listening to. Even if there were a bunch of them, they are mostly doing variations on the same theme. Why not stick with the originals? Up over and out. Don't know if I agree with this statement. While I agree that there are MANY musicians that are re-hashing the old stuff with a slight twist, there are lots contemporary voices with pleanty to say. Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Ben Allison, William Parker, Kurt Rosenwinkel to name a few.....they are all fresh, innovative players who respect tradition yet manage to sound like nobody else but themselves.
  2. Congrats, Paul!
  3. I am very sympathetic to her widow and her children. I lost my mother way too early, and it is a terrible tragedy. But the National Parks are dangerous places. I remember when I was at Yellowstone people were doing stupid shit left and right....getting too close to the bison, stepping too close to the geysers/thermal vents, climbing over guardrails, leaving food around the campsites, etc. Too many people don't respect nature, and they forget that it's wild and unforgiving.
  4. I agree. The K2's always sounded much better to my ears than the RVGs. I would understand them no longer making new K2's, but discontinuing the ones already in print would be a horrible move.
  5. Anybody know if these are going to remain in print? I was noticing that at CD universe all the ones I queried on are backordered since May. Has anyone heard anything?
  6. The only purchase I've ever made from Mosaic that I'm not 100% happy with was the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh set. I bought it a couple years back right when it was going out of print. The praise on this board seemed to be unanimously positive, so I took the plunge and ended up getting the last set. I enjoy the Marsh material quite a bit, and Tristano is interesting, but Konitz just isn't my bag. I realize he a legend and I respect him and all....just a bit too mellow and uninteresting for me. And since Konitz is on 80% of the material, it makes it difficult for me to fully enjoy the set, and I don't find myself ever really listening to it. However, I've learned that with jazz it so often happens that one day you will just "get" it, even if its something you despised before. So I'm gonna hang on to this set.
  7. Just got through Disc 1 !!
  8. VIVA MEXICO!!!
  9. Derek surpassed EC in depth and maturity of playing years ago, imo. Eric is a nice player and all, but Derek is just plain ridiculous. Hopefully, playing with Derek might do Eric some good! Derek is plain ridiculous, but I still don't think he's as good as Clapton was in his prime.

  11. Oh you're going to like George on these sides. Also Hank and Stan! Don't forget Sonny! This is a great set. Congrats, Cliff!
  12. I'm glad this thread was started.....I LOVE this session!!! Love the intensity, the creativeness....one of my favorite Jackie Mac sessions. I'm surprised its not discussed more.

    David Murray

I really like his playing on the Henry Grimes "Kerava Jazz Festival" album. He sounds quite energized.
  14. What he said.
  15. Next time you come to Chi town, check out the Jazz Record Mart. The majority of them are $18.99, but they always have a bunch of titles that they are selling for $14.99. I think I've gotten the majority of my Criss Cross titles this way.
  16. I'm not a huge Oliver Stone fan either, though I do think Platoon is a great war movie. I saw United 93 and I will see this one as well.
  17. okay, i'll bite - who?? Che? Deep? Aric? Jazzis? Greg M? I'm curious too. pryan?

I have a CD of his called "Steppin' Zone" on Criss Cross that I enjoy. Its nothing groundbreaking, but its a very hard swinging set of intense bop that at times has some really incredible playing by all involved. I didn't think much of his compositions, but he's definitely a fine trumpet player. An above average Criss Cross session IMO.

    Kenny Garrett

I'm hoping that they will eventually release a recording taken from the shows he did with Pharoah Sanders and Tain a couple years back.
  20. I lost interest in Pearl Jam back in the mid-nineties. I thought Vitalogy was an excellent album, but really didn't get into anything they did after that. However, I've been hearing nothing but extremely positive things about their new album titled Pearl Jam. I picked it up today but have yet to spin it. Has anyone heard this? Thoughts?
  21. For the past couple of years, I've been going to the wineries located in southwest Michigan along the Lake Michigan Shore. The wines from this region have been starting to get some attention in the national wine press, as its a region that consistantly produces high quality wines. I've tasted some excellent wines from this area...they are becoming quite good at doing Rieslings, Pinots, and Cabernets. Lots of good stuff coming out this year.....Fenn Valley winery south of Holland always makes a very nice Pinot Grigio, and Domaine Berrien, near St. Joseph, has a very nice blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc and Merlot that they call Crown of Cab that is excellent. I also hear that the wineries further north near Traverse City are excellent as well. Hoping to plan a trip this summer.
  22. If you don't have this set, or don't own the material......my deepest sympathies.

    Melvin Sparks

I saw him play quite some time ago as the special guest of a funk band named Robert Walter's 20th Congress. It was a great show and I was impressed by Melvin's abilities.
  24. Was spinning "Meditations" a few days ago. What a POWERFUL record.
