  1. I saw it last night....didn't like it. The movie looks and sounds really great. But it can't cover up the predictable story, EXTREMELY corny dialogue, and a wooden performance from Brandon Routhe that will make everyone miss Christopher Reeve that much more. The jokes were bad, and the emotion stale. Typical Hollywood crap. I'm starting to get really sick of these lackluster comic book adaptations that are supposedly the new wave of American action films. Its running its course fast. And this is coming from a big fan of comics.
  2. There are been many times where I'm listening to a Sonny Rollins record, and I think to myself, "This guy has to be the greatest sax player I've ever heard." Sonny is a true giant and one of my favorite musicians. Can't wait for the new record!
  3. I like the album, though not as much as I liked "Jumping the Creek" from last year. If you enjoyed "Which Way is East", which was his duet recording with Billy Higgins, I think that you'll be more inclined to like this. The two albums aren't necessarily very similar musically, but have similar "vibes" to them, IMO. And Lloyd only plays piano on one track, if I remember correctly.
  4. When i discovered this, I went back and cleaned probably 50 jewel cases. Worked like a charm.
  5. I saw the quartet something like 2 or 3 years ago. It was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life.
  6. I really like "On the Rising of the 64 Paths".
  7. I'm in the same boat. I don't dislike the Tony Williams stuff, but it never really reached me either. This CD, however, is really something. Might be my favorite new release this year so far, along with the Andrew Hill.
  8. Try listening to Sidewinder full blast in a red 1987 BMW M6 speeding down Laurel Canyon and you will become a convert in about 10 seconds. Awesome!
  9. I've been on the prowl recently for some good, modern rock bands to get into (and have taken some cues from the thread devoted to this topic). I have been hearing about the Flaming Lips for a long time from some friends whose musical tastes I hold in high regard. I took a chance earlier this week and bought one of their CD's called "The Soft Bulletin". Needless to say I was quite unprepared for what I was about to hear. I was so surprised to hear these very personal, introspective lyrics written in a way that resembles pop music. The melodies of the songs are "poppy", and the choruses of most of the songs are memorable enough to remember after just one listen. Yet this is music that I could NEVER imagine getting any sort of mainstream popularity. This may be due to the absolutely incredible soundscapes that fill the backgrounds of these "pop" songs. I was COMPLETELY blown away by the beautiful background orchestrations that incorporate so many different instruments and sounds. It was a strange listening experience.....I had never quite heard any music like that in my life, but at the same time I knew that what I was hearing was very special, and I was enjoying it very much. I want to listen to the disc more, but I'm convinced that I'm now officially a Flaming Lips fan, and plan on exploring more of their albums. Anybody here a fan? Any recommendations for other good Flaming Lips albums?
  10. Why? IMO, there are few comtemporary jazz musicians who can hold a candle to the guys you've been listening to. Even if there were a bunch of them, they are mostly doing variations on the same theme. Why not stick with the originals? Up over and out. Don't know if I agree with this statement. While I agree that there are MANY musicians that are re-hashing the old stuff with a slight twist, there are lots contemporary voices with pleanty to say. Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Ben Allison, William Parker, Kurt Rosenwinkel to name a few.....they are all fresh, innovative players who respect tradition yet manage to sound like nobody else but themselves.
  11. Congrats, Paul!
  12. I am very sympathetic to her widow and her children. I lost my mother way too early, and it is a terrible tragedy. But the National Parks are dangerous places. I remember when I was at Yellowstone people were doing stupid shit left and right....getting too close to the bison, stepping too close to the geysers/thermal vents, climbing over guardrails, leaving food around the campsites, etc. Too many people don't respect nature, and they forget that it's wild and unforgiving.
  13. I agree. The K2's always sounded much better to my ears than the RVGs. I would understand them no longer making new K2's, but discontinuing the ones already in print would be a horrible move.
  14. Anybody know if these are going to remain in print? I was noticing that at CD universe all the ones I queried on are backordered since May. Has anyone heard anything?
  15. The only purchase I've ever made from Mosaic that I'm not 100% happy with was the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh set. I bought it a couple years back right when it was going out of print. The praise on this board seemed to be unanimously positive, so I took the plunge and ended up getting the last set. I enjoy the Marsh material quite a bit, and Tristano is interesting, but Konitz just isn't my bag. I realize he a legend and I respect him and all....just a bit too mellow and uninteresting for me. And since Konitz is on 80% of the material, it makes it difficult for me to fully enjoy the set, and I don't find myself ever really listening to it. However, I've learned that with jazz it so often happens that one day you will just "get" it, even if its something you despised before. So I'm gonna hang on to this set.
  16. Just got through Disc 1 !!
  17. VIVA MEXICO!!!
  18. Derek surpassed EC in depth and maturity of playing years ago, imo. Eric is a nice player and all, but Derek is just plain ridiculous. Hopefully, playing with Derek might do Eric some good! Derek is plain ridiculous, but I still don't think he's as good as Clapton was in his prime.

    Death Certificate was the shit!
  20. Oh you're going to like George on these sides. Also Hank and Stan! Don't forget Sonny! This is a great set. Congrats, Cliff!
  21. I'm glad this thread was started.....I LOVE this session!!! Love the intensity, the creativeness....one of my favorite Jackie Mac sessions. I'm surprised its not discussed more.

    David Murray

I really like his playing on the Henry Grimes "Kerava Jazz Festival" album. He sounds quite energized.
  23. What he said.
