  1. Wow. I've never seen any of these movies. I don't know whether to be embarrassed or snooty...
  2. Shit. There's a man who occupies a major portion of my shelves. No one lives forever, but sometimes you think there ought to be an exception... As far as a favorite, I'd have to make a difficult choice between Hard Times and Race, but if he wrote a bad one, or even a frivolous one, I haven't found it yet. The man wrote books that desperately needed to be written.
  3. So we're still waiting for the post that says "12/12; I collected My Little Pony porn." Allen?
  4. It could be ugly... I am inclined to think that unless you absolutely need to tap into your savings in the next decade, it's best just to grit your teeth and sit tight with a well-diversified portfolio. The worst thing to do at this point is to engage in some panic selling. Of course, I am just an economist, not an investment expert. Guy Maybe you're not, but it's pretty obvious that the only reason to sell at this point is to lock in your losses.
  5. I felt that way about missing "Cherry Treats". Only 7 of 12, but remember, I'm a moose, so this one's kinda tough...
  6. Marion Barry Chuck Berry Barry Goldwater
  7. I've never clicked on it; I assumed it was a link to a McCain campaign film...
  8. Allen Steele Greg Bear Connie Willis
  9. Sigh. Just another thing I'm missing from my computer right now, along with StumbleUpon, Firefox, heck, tons of stuff. You'd think I'd have more free time now...
  10. Fixed it for ya. On the other hand, earthquakes usually shorten the game considerably, although they can keep an obviously inferior team's hopes alive longer in a series...
  11. Yeah, that's about where I'm at at this point. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not going to leave any "lasting legacy". That novel I thought I had in me turns out to have just been indigestion. If I can just have a few people who, after I die, can honestly say "I'm glad I knew him", then that would be nice.
  12. I can't argue with that, though I'm not sure the universities are at fault.
  13. MG, far be it from me to recommend a Mac; I've always thought Mac users would one day be found dead in the sun from poisoned kool-aid. But if I had to get a new computer before Vista goes away, I'd have to considera Mac myself...
  14. Chris, I'll confess to not having looked at the thread since very early in it's existence. It's one of those threads that would just frustrate me with dial-up internet service. However, rest assured that I have every intention of checking it out once I move into town and have access to DSL or cable service. And the more the better! But don't feel too flattered; I'm looking forward to the 'sexy album cover' thread again as well...
  15. Discussions of Olivia Newton-John would have stopped me in my tracks as well.
  16. Does it have to be useful knowledge? Woody Hayes filled the mind of millions of Americans with the knowledge that he was an idiot with one punch...
  17. And I can be a virtual Stalinist! I say take her avatar to the gulag for reprogramming...
  18. My first thought was Whole Lotta Love, but maybe Going to California would be a saner choice...
  19. Ted Nugent sometime around '77 or '78 in Savannah, GA. Not only loud, but monotonous and boring. Golden Earring opened and were much better. Though not as loud...
  20. I take it that Allen does not subscribe to this viewpoint...
  21. Granny Goose Laura Scudder Mrs. Butterworth
  22. No loss for me, unless the computer monitors change...
  23. Yeah, the guy's the O. Henry of Nigerian scam letters...
