From the stories I've heard (particularly his 'brave act' of hiring Billie Holiday then refusing to stand by her when they toured the South and she couldn't get into the hotels and such), I'd have to agree. I'll listen to his music, but I wouldn't have invited him over for tea or anything...

For Those Who Like To Watch Loads of Films

Looks like the only plunge this buyer took was off eBay for bidding on items and not following through... -
In your case, Catesta, quite a bit...

Jeez...late again! Best wishes and all!!

"Genius" is thrown around on threads like this far too often, but this time it is most definitely appropriate.

Damn...all these years I've been pronouncing his name wrong... -
Perhaps if Mosaic issued the Complete Significant Other with alternate takes? I dunno...I have a feeling that if I tried any 'alternate takes' I'd get a frying pan upside the head...

Is there any cake left? Oh well; happy birthday anyway, Marty....love that avatar!

Hey, I did ths the last three months of last year; I'll be damned if I'm gonna try to make it through another month. In fact, it's too late already...

Kevin, the only reason sellers can get away with 'feedback blackmail' is because buyers have an over inflated sense of feedback's importance. Unless you're using the same ID to buy and sell (in which case I would recommend STOP and start a second ID), there's no point in putting up with it. What the heck does a buyer need feedback for? I've only left negative feedback once, but I left it with no concern as to what I'd receive in return. I'll admit, watching my feedback number rise was interesting until it hit 30 or so, but after that I lost interest. Feedback is of no use to a buyer at all, unless you run into one of those sellers who will only sell to buyers with a certain feedback. I have refused to leave feedback at all before, in the case of a seller who wrote "Our feedback policy is to leave the same feedback we receive". Well, if they aren't taking it seriously, why should I help them out? The service was great, the product was flawless, but don't threaten me, you know? Bottom line: if you're a buyer, who gives a shit about feedback? Get over the obsession, people...

Well, obviously you're not reading the other responses on the thread as two very real possibilities have been mentioned already. The seller is not always evil, the buyer is not always innocent. What do you do when you ship your nice Jackie Mac LP to a buyer, and he returns it because of an obvious scratch. A scratch that wasn't there when you shipped it. Hmm...well, he paid on time, so obviously you've already given him positive feedback...

Oh, I agree. If I sell (haven't on eBay but have on other auction sites more focused in merchandise), I add the insurance into my base price and they get it whether they want it or not. As for the disclaimer...good luck, if part of your objective is to avoid negative feedback.

Frankly, I don't think you guys have the slightest idea what feedback is for anyway. It's not a thank you, a pat on the back, etc. It's a comment for your (possible) future trading partners. A few things to keep in mind: 1. The opening remarks of the thread, the old bit about once a buyer pays they should get feedback, is laughable. If you haven't had the lovely experience of having a buyer pay and then get absolutely gonzo on you, that's great for you, but it happens. Ebay suggests (and since feedback is NOT a requirement, suggest is all they can do) that feedback be left when the deal is completed. It ain't completed at a different time for the buyer and for the seller, people... 2. Dan, just because something is obvious to you doesn't mean it's the truth; odds are your sellers used an automatic feedback system like Berigan mentions. If this really bugs you, then do the research on your sellers before you buy; it doesn't take that much work to check out their 'feedback left' and compare it to the feedback they receive. More work than it's worth for me, because as a buyer, feedback doesn't mean a damned thing to me... 3. Note to Wolff: I'd be one of those buyers. Insurance is your look out, not the buyers. Your job as a seller is to deliver the merchandise to me in the condition stated. My job is to deliver the correct payment to you. Why the heck should I pay for the insurance? Are you going to ship the merchandise anyway if my check gets lost in the mail?

Happy birthday, doc! By the way, is it true that my dream last night about boffing my wife really mean I have a fixation with trains? Or did I read that 25 cent pocket book wrong...

Well, they won't actually be delivered until after the first, so I figured it was okay... Sorry; I'd love to help, but I'm still far too disturbed by the idea of Amazon thinking "Peter Johnson" is a woman that I can't concentrate...

Who you used to NOT get, but now do
Jazzmoose replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I guess the most obvious "didn't get but now do" for me is Ornette. Took forever and a day... There are plenty of artists who didn't click at first, but then if this was easy listening I'd be bored by now anyway! -
I give him a week. If there's a pool, my wife says put her down for three days...

Aww, don't worry Randy...that old lady had it coming. I agree! Randy, once she made that crack about Elmo Hope, all bets were off!

Terribly sad news about a fellow forum member
Jazzmoose replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Forums Discussion
I agree. Wow; I guess if you find yourself in an 'extended family' like this, these things are bound to happen, but just like real family, that doesn't make it any easier. While I knew Grey was having health problems (thanks to a discussion with his family while I was apologizing for being a horse's ass on a thread) I had no idea it was this bad. How kind of her to take time to let us know; that's an "above and beyond" duty! -
Birthday, not Christmas, but I got the Simpsons season five. YEAH!!!! Barb got Gone with the Wind, on the condition that I didn't have to watch it...

Now that's an odd combination... -
Wow... First, my apologies for taking so long to respond to this thread; yesterday was pretty busy, what with an extremely unusual bit of overtime at work, my traditional Birthday dinner of spaghetti with homemade marinara sauce and then an enjoyable bit of time spent with my best birthday present (Simpsons season 5, of course!). But thanks to all! Yeah, Greg; I remember the days of one present under the tree wrapped in birthday paper well...not exactly traumatic, but certainly an odd childhood memory... As to the where I've been question, well...I actually decided to cut back on my time here. When the board started, I felt obligated to post as much as I could out of fear that we'd become one of those boards that hardly ever has anything new to read when you log on. I really wanted this place to make it, and wanted to do my part. Well...I guess I got in the habit, because even when it was obvious that this board was secure and here to stay, I kept on posting like a madman. Then this month it dawned on me that I was spending more time on the board here than I was spending on actually listening to jazz. Yeah, I'd have jazz playing while I was here, but as far as actually listening...well, jazz had become my internet background music. And we all know the music deserves better than that. So, I've made a concious effort to cut back on my board activities and spend more time listening. Plus my 'no new CDs until the end of the year' pledge is just about to expire, so there's finalizing my 'go nuts and make up for that stoopid idea' spending spree to work on... Just don't get the idea that this is one of those farewell posts or something, though; I'm still gonna be here. And who knows how long I can keep my mouth semi-shut...once a heavy poster, always a heavy poster probably. We'll see!

Who you used to NOT get, but now do
Jazzmoose replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Jazz. Okay; I'll come up with a few more detailed things after Christmas, okay? The family beckons... -
I took a one quarter jazz history course (12 weeks, two nights of four hours each), and believe me, there's only so much you can cover. Our instructor didn't bother going past the sixties other than a little fusion (all I can remember is Bitches Brew). I can understand this; it's damned hard to cover jazz after hard bop with a limited time, and tracing the early development has to be done. I think the best you can expect of any jazz history course is that either it gets the student interested, or if they're already interested, it gives them some 'step off points' for further exploration. These survey courses can't possibly give one a solid background on any subject; education on anything is a life long process, not a one quarter shot at learning it all... (Aside to Jim: no, we didn't cover any organ trios either. But I can't complain about the course; it certainly lit the fire, and I'll always be grateful to the instructor. No matter how much the wife complains...)
