You know, I've often thought that I should just buy two copies of any CD with "Meets" in the title...

I heard one today about Santa smokin' reefer that was pretty interesting...

I stick the Quintet disc with Bird, which for some reason goes under 'P'. Probably because he squeaks or something... I try to avoid any and all various CDs for this vary...uh, I mean very reason! The one that kills me is the one I couldn't avoid, the Black Orpheus soundtrack. So I came up with a new rule that soundtrack discs go after Z....

Sounds good, but I dunno if I'm willing to shell out for another Motown collection; the one we've got (heh; conned the wife into buying it so it wouldn't count against me!) seems okay to me. We'll see...

And yet most (I'm tempted to say all, but I'm chicken!) of Christianity's celebrations are lifted directly from pagans. Amazing...

After reading the thread now, my reocurring thought was..."shit; was that this year???" I think I bought more discs than I thought.... -

Okay...just went through the shelves, hopefully remembering what I bought this year and what was from the end of last year. I must admit, the 'no box set' rule altered things somewhat. So here we go, in alphabetical order... 1. Brotzmann/Uuskyla Friis Nielson: Live at Nefertiti -ayler records-Strongly recommended by people on this board, and were they ever right! 2. 'Die Like a Dog' Quartet: From Valley to Valley-eremite- My favorite Brotzmann without a doubt. This is the disc I've been grabbing this year on those days when my energy level is so high that I can't resist seeing how high I can force it... 3. Gerry Mulligan: The Original Quartet with Chet Baker-Pacific Jazz-One of those cornerstone discs as far as I'm concerned; glad I grabbed this off our beloved 'Looking/Offering' forum, where I also found... 4. Greg Osby: Symbols of Light (A Solution)-Blue Note-This one turned out to be pricey. Oh, it was fairly (and cheaply!) priced, but it pushed me over the edge and on an Osby buying spree. No complaints though! 5. Malachi Thompson and Africa Brass: Blue Jazz-Delmark-Heard a cut on KCSM and was instantly hooked. Thank goodness buying a jazz disc on the basis of one cut isn't like buying a pop disc on the basis of one cut! A nice one, and highly recommended! But enough of this; now I can go back and read the thread and see what you guys picked! -
The most consistent Blue Note 50's and 60's leader

Oh, shit...I forgot to switch to my 'Aric' account... -

If it wasn't for Witchita, I probably wouldn't be here. That's the LP that started me down this road all those years ago. It's one of my all time favorite albums, but obviously, my opinion is colored by a lot of emotional attachment, fond memories and gratitude. I'm glad to hear someone else refer to it as great, CJ...I agree completely, but I'm so biased on this one it hurts!

Once an hour is the speed of the Space Needle if I remember right. Easy to get used to. Still, wasn't this part of a Monty Python sketch once? What happens if people cease to believe? -
Hell, all I ever bought was Nevermind and Unplugged anyway; guess I won't miss it...

Now that Aric has labeled the entire board as fucking idiots, maybe we can get a duet thing going with Peewee and George accusing us all of public masturbation...

Not only did Mac hit 49 his first year, he missed the last week or so of the season. Easily could have broken 50. Am I saying he wasn't juiced? Heck, I don't know. But if he was, he was there from day one of his major league career. Canseco was the first 40-40 man, by the way.

Is this the famous ***GRAMMY NOMINATED*** Phil we're talking about? 'Happy Birthday' seems so inadequate, but I'll have to go with it!

Well, if it's consistent in high quality, I'd have to agree with your choice of Wayne Shorter, z! -
Well, with CJ here, I won't even try to claim the title of 'biggest Pat Metheny fan', but I'm certainly a fan of his work. Let's put it this way: his space on my shelves rivals that of Miles, Monk, Coltrane and such, plus he was my pathway into jazz in the first place. So I'd say I probably like him more than most around here. As far as a favorite, it really depends on my mood. What I consider his best one day may not make the top third another, you know? There's a lot of variety in his work, after all. It's not like grabbing a Blue Note hard bop artist where consistency of material is the key (which is not to say that this is the case for all Blue Note hard bop artists!). I'd say the one that gets the most play for me is Offramp. But that doesn't necessarily mean I consider it his best, or even my favorite. As for his sideman appearances, I really like his work on Redman's Wish.

Just thinking of how many hush puppies you'd need to go with that thing is making my head swim...

Okay, maybe cutting up those credit cards was a bit too drastic...
-
Duh.... Thanks, Mike...guess I should be asking if anyone is familiar with Perry....

Happy Birthday, John...but it couldn't have been a year already, could it?

Saxophone player I heard on KCSM today (the cut was Desperate Measures from the Steeplechase disc A New Abode); I really liked what I heard, and was wondering if anyone knew anything or had any recommendations. Seems like the DJ said she was from somewhere in Eastern Europe, but I can't be sure...

Wow...this brings back memories of my teen years when, after a little 'redecorating' of the sign at our church, we proudly attended the Untied Methodist Church for two weeks before anyone noticed...
