  1. Thanks, Jim, although I feel like part of my body is missing. The way things have been going there lately, I'd say it's my colon...
  2. Oh yeah; well, at least we won't have to resort to talking about that "jazz" stuff; I don't understand what these people get out of that crazy stuff!
  3. Wait a minute; maybe I do...
  4. I don't understand how it helps post count.
  5. My only fear is "how will I ever reach 'Dr. Funkenstein' level now?"
  6. Jim, could you add my name to the "nonpolitical" gang as well? Thanks. And don't you dare laugh, Brad!
  7. Ain't that the truth? I've finally figured out that if I love every CD I buy, I'm just being a chicken. Jazz musicians aren't the only ones that need to take chances! (Of course, when I get one I don't like, I try real hard not to think about what I could have bought instead...)
  8. I'm off today and tomorrow this week, so the wife and I have a rare day off together. We're headed to Santa Cruz for the day. Those of you in the Bay Area won't believe this, but it'll be my first time there. Of course, when you lived in southern Georgia, and think of a trip to the beach as Jekyll Island, this frozen northern California beach idea leaves a lot to be desired...
  9. Whoa. My very first car was a beat-to-shit Rambler with "Flash-o-Matic" transmission. Not only a stupid idea, but the Reverse button kept falling behind the dash, so I'd use it with reluctance, giving me a four-wheeled impossibly large motorcycle... I had no idea any other manufacturer had fallen for this idiocy!
  10. Yeah, just let it go Dan. Johnny has shown more about himself than about you in posting the PM. One thing we ALL need to keep in mind (and I forget this myself sometimes) is that, for better or worse, we're hanging with a pretty smart crowd here. Most everyone seems to be pretty capable of figuring out the score when something happens...
  11. I went through this as well, back in the late 80s. The vinyl is still fine and playable, but the jackets were gone of course. I didn't lose anything like Sun Ra records though. Wow.
  12. I can relate to that; I spent five minutes the other night digging through the drawers of my desk before it occurred to me what I was looking for...
  13. Is he kidding? I've been "longing for the days" for years now...
  14. Sometimes, it doesn't take much to amuse me...
  15. Aha! Bertrand found the weak spot!!
  16. JimR, eBay most definitely does NOT police frauds that you describe (cancelling an auction then proceeding with "off ebay" auctions or sales), but I think it would be unfair to expect it of them. After all, once the auction is cancelled, eBay is no longer involved. Now, as to whether or not eBay is doing enough to police the auctions that they ARE involved with, I'd say definitely not. Some categories are absolutely rampant with fraud. The stamps category comes to mind. There have been countless instances where somone has bought a common stamp on eBay, altered it in some way to make it appear to be a rarer variety, and then resold it on eBay. This has happened with used stamps, with cancels that match up perfectly making the posibility of the stamps actually being different copies impossible, yet eBay will say "we have no proof" and do nothing. Frankly, we're lucky to be jazz fans as far as eBay goes; the fraud level's a lot lower. The only problem I've had on eBay with jazz is buying a CD two or three years ago from Brad that led to these silly bulletin boards and the loss of my free time!
  17. I give up; you win. Sigh... Oops; hang over from the political threads... I give up because you're right; I forgot that the refund offer had nothing to do with the orginal contract. Still, I had to bet on what eBay's decision would be if the 'buyer' chose to report it, it would be that they would at the very least warn Hal.
  18. I agree; unless you're just starting out in eBay, one neg is not going to break you. And if you sell regularly or for any length of time, you're going to get that first negative.
  19. Hal-I'd probably just leave it alone at this point and hope for the best; I don't know... Brad, I was trying to think of a way to explain, but if reading your own post doesn't do it, I probably can't either. "You want your money back, here's the deal" pretty much sums it up, since the refund has already been promised. Thinking on it overnight, though, I could very well be wrong. Demanding certain feedback as part of the "deal" is certainly feedback extortion, by eBay's past definition; I don't see that demanding NO feedback is any different, but I don't know this as a fact. Feedback is NOT a part of the deal itself; it is an evaluation of the deal.
  20. And from the consumer side of the story, some of that money is now mine! Cool stuff, too...
  21. Hey, there's a reason I don't drive anymore!

    Wadada Leo Smith

I've only listened to the first two discs so far (I've fallen in with a bad crowd; yeah, I'm talking about YOU guys! and I've bought too much jazz so far this year!), but so far my impressions have been "somewhat interesting, but am I ever going to listen to this again?" I agree with Lon on the percussion, and as for the brass playing, as much as I love Smith's tone, he really doesn't seem to do much with it. I'm not saying pass on it, but compared to the Art Ensemble box I got shortly after, or the Anderson/Drake disc I've been spinning today, it really doesn't match up for me...
  23. Ouch! Well, it probably won't matter, but this probably falls into eBay's definition of "feedback extortion", an offense that (supposedly) could actually result in your account being suspended. I doubt he'll report it, but be careful...
