  1. Arnold makes Babe look like a cheap ham! But I'll deny ever saying that if quoted...
  2. Hey, I've reached the point where I'll just wait for the eventual reissue. Compared to many here, my jazz collection is miniscule; there's plenty in print that I need as much as pricey out of print stuff, particularly from an artist with plenty in print.
  3. Well, he certainly has an appropriate ebay handle...
  4. A requirement for a book to be top notch, as far as I'm concerned. I hate it when I finish a really good book and I'm telling the wife about it, and she asks "what's it about?" It used to drive me crazy! Take for example, a book mentioned in the baseball book thread: A False Spring by Pat Jordan. Is it about baseball? Well, yes, but only a totally simplistic skim would lead you to say "it's about baseball". It's about failure, dealing with failure, growing up, dreams and reality, all kinds of stuff. It's about life, as any good book is. But when I throw my hands up and tell my wife "it's about life", she just shakes her head, looks at me funny and whines "that's what you always say!"
  5. They talked me into it as well. Thanks a lot, guys... Oh well; all will be forgiven once it gets here!
  6. Yes, but in a great way, of course!
  7. Great fucking Zeus!!
  8. Right on both counts, Paul; thanks!
  9. I highly recommend two already mentioned here, A False Spring and Veeck as in Wreck. Other favorites: I Had a Hammer by Hank Aaron. For those who thought Jackie Robinson had a tough time integrating the majors, read about one of the first black players in the Sally League. A whole different ballgame. Plus, there's later in his career, but it's the early stuff I recommend it for. The Pitch that Killed Can't remember the author or the names of the players involved (all my baseball books are packed away in the garage), but an engrossing account of the first (only?) on-field baseball fatality. Well written and in depth. There was a really good book by Kinsella (not the Shoeless Joe one, but another...) that I really enjoyed, but I can't remember the title. Great help, eh? Something about the Iowa Leagues if I recall right. Then there was George Plimpton's book about pitcher Sidd Finch. Lot's of fun. Again, I can't recall the title... Jeez, I wish I could find that box; there were some good books in there...
  10. I dunno. I have to bow to y'all's superior knowledge, and maybe in a few years I'll look back and agree, but I like Harrell's work at the moment. As for Woods...well, I must admit, the initial interest isn't panning out as I'd thought...
  11. Blood Simple is such a cool movie! I love that scene where they're in bed and talking about Marty saying he was anal, and just being bewildered by it. Gets me everytime! As far as recent acquisitions, I just ordered The 400 Blows. I heard it was really good; I think it's about a French cat house or something... (But seriously, I hope it's as good as it's reputation; I've never seen it.)
  12. Aw, the ol' mooster is loved! Shit! Is that my wife I hear coming in the door???
  13. I've been successfully avoiding the politics forum except of late. All the interesting discussions over the holdidays came from that area, so I had to plunge in for a quick swim. We seem to have the same weakness...I've "strayed" lately myself. Time to get back on the wagon!
  14. Bev asked around this time last year where we thought our musical investigations would take us in the coming year, and I remember posting that it would be interesting to bring the thread back up at the end of the year and tell how what we planned on checking out compared to what really happened. Unfortunately, there's no way to bump that thread up on a nonexistant bulletin board, so I thought I'd bring up the subject here. If I remember right, one or two of you used to post on the old BNBB... So, if you remember what you expected to be checking out last year, did your path stray from your map? How? And, just to hopefully give this convoluted subject more chances at responses, what do you think you'll be checking out in the new year? Any plans? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I remember announcing that I planned to seriously acquaint myself with the music of Phil Woods in 2003, an artist I was just beginning to dabble in thanks to my admiration for the work of trumpeter Tom Harrell. If I remember correctly, my other plan was to check out more modern big band stuff. How did I do? Well, I did pick up a dozen or so Woods discs, from the looks of my shelf, and there are a couple of big band discs that were added, but the real exploration this year was in artists I was completely unfamiliar with at this time last year. People like Roscoe Mitchell and Grachan Moncur. More Wayne Shorter, stuff like that. In other words, what I planned had nothing to do with what happened. This leads me to believe that this is not the great topic idea I thought it was a year ago. After all, if you know exactly where you're going with your listening, you're probably already there anyway, right? I mean, if you're going to be so predictable with your exploration that there aren't any surprises, what's the point? So I guess this means that I ought to just delete this topic and pretend it never happened. But it's early in the morning, insomnia has me again, and I'm just stubborn and groggy enough not to realize how goofy this will look in the morning. I figure that either it will be an interesting discussion, or it'll drift to the bottom of the page as people shake their heads and say "I dunno; that Jazzmoose...sometimes he makes sense, but sometimes it's like he's trying to piss up a flagpole. What the hell was that one supposed to mean?" Think of it as an experiment in sociology...
  15. Sounds like a place to avoid at all costs. I tell you, I love these jazz boards (Organissimo, AAJ, Jazzcorner) and the music fans I've met here. It's such a relief to find people who are stable enough to enjoy an artists music without having to convince themselves that the artist is some sort of god...

    The "B" team

Glad to see people mentioning Houston Person, as I just ordered a disc by him yesterday. My wife and I were listening to KCSM in the car, and she said "now that's what I think of when I think of jazz!" I must admit, it was nice stuff, so I ordered.
  17. er...make that "same Sauder cubes"; if it was all in one cube everything would have to have gone through a trash compactor first!
  18. I think I'm the one you're referring to, Shrdlu, but rest assured that when I say "stored" I don't mean as in "stored away never to be seen"; I keep all my vinyl in the same Sauder cube. I'm just afraid that if I don't keep the booklets with the boxes, they'll get lost, or a cat will get to them or some other tragedy will occur. While I am not a big liner note fan, I'll agree that the Mosaic books are something special and a big part of why I'm willing to spring for the sets.
  19. I'll second that one. Great stuff here!
  20. Oops! Thought this was about the parade; never mind...
  21. Oh, I'm not saying a better one couldn't be made, just that it won't. The only way I could see a movie being made that was more faithful to the book is if it was made by a "fan", which is always a recipe for disaster in my mind. But who knows...
  22. No way. This flick is fine; and there won't be a better one made of this book.
  23. Hmm. No bids yet; perhaps it's the seller that's filled with something...
  24. Wow. That really sucks. It was bad enough when they cancelled the series on TV, leaving Agent Cooper in the hands of Bob, but to not even let me get back to that point? Shit, I told my wife after we saw the last episode on the set "Wait until you see the second year; this was the normal stuff!!" What a let down. It's those fucking owls, I'll bet...
  25. If they don't get that damned second season out soon, I'm gonna burst a blood vessel!
