Wow! Being poor/lazy/whatever, I managed to find five I wanted (Monk, Powell, Hill, J.J., and Green), and rather than put one back, did something I normally don't do and promised myself I would avoid. I bought the Kenton. No, seriously, I actually went the "upgrade" route and picked Out to Lunch. Hope it's really better!

Happy Birthday, guys; and remember: you already got one wish, you're not Joel's cats! -

My friends all like jazz, so I figure Mosaic gift certificates. My enemies all hate jazz, so I figure Mosaic gift certificates. It's the all-purpose gift! -
Frighteningly big...

I'd love to, but since that's correct, it wouldn't make much sense... Think "wrap around".

Do you mean for President, or is this a nonpolitical question?

For those of us who couldn't take a hint unless delivered on the end of a two by four, I take it JSP is a label that should be avoided for ethical reasons?

Not all of us; some of us turned to the bottle instead... -
Ballard was one of the last SF writers I got into before I moved on. In fact, he's probably one of the reasons I moved on; he was more of a "bridge" for me. Looking back, I'm not sure he ever belonged on the SF shelf...

We do it that way as well, vibes, but I like it. Of course, with just the two of us, we have to do it that way in order to stretch it out a bit...

AOW November 16-22 -SAM RIVERS Fuchsia Swing Song
Jazzmoose replied to Man with the Golden Arm's topic in Album Of The Week
On a thread about reading, Lon talked about how the same book can have a different effect on you at different times in your life. I'm reminded of that because it just occured to me that the same disc is going to sound different depending on when you're first exposed to the music. I've heard other, more recent Rivers stuff, which I figured would prepare me for this. If I had heard this one a few years ago, I would have been amazed, and probaby scared off. However, my first listen was when I picked up the newest release, and comparing the disc to it's reputation led to an interesting impression: I was disappointed at how conservative it sounded to me. Strange... Mind you, I still like it, and at points Rivers gives me what I was expecting. I'm not sure the other artists do, but all in all I'll give it a thumbs up. I have to remind myself that this was recorded almost forty years ago, don't I? -
Rockefeller Center, you hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned. The key to enjoying this disc, at least for me, was to think soundtrack. Personally, I think Hat and Beard would have been absolutely perfect for the opening of Welles' Touch of Evil. I get shivers just thinking of the combination. I remember way back when Shorter's The All Seeing Eye was the AOTW, and I talked about the experience being halfway between auditory and visual, well, this disc has the same effect. It's more than music, it creates an entire life experience between my ears each time I hear it. For me, this disc is one of those rare performances that will always be "top ten" material.

I know I'm in definite disagreement with many here, but this is without a doubt my favorite Brooks disc. Perhaps the fact that it was the first of his discs that I heard, but I don't think so. Every track stands out as a classic, led by Nutville, one of the best opening tracks on any CD I've heard. Minor Move is it's near equal, leading me to feel a loss not only because of Brooks' relatively low output as a performer, but also as a writer. Not that the three covers are anything less than stellar! All in all, I'd put any of Brooks' CDs on a list of great discs, but this is the one that makes the short list of "must have CDs" for me.

There's an element of the collector in my approach to music; I can't help that...I just happen to have that silly hardwiring in my brain. I try to keep it confined to my U.S. Coins and Scandinavian stamps, but sometimes it pops up. Like when I see a complete list of Conns posted here... That said, it's pretty easy to knock down, and I'd have to say that the listener side of me is more excited than the collector ever was. I'd go with 96% listener, 4% collector. Just enough of a collector that I have trouble getting rid of anything...

Don't worry about it. As Jim says, it'll be back. There's so much jazz out there to hear that chasing after OOP discs is really sort of a sucker's game (apologies to all; I do it too, but still feel that way). If you can't find enough to listen to with in print CDs, my guess is that you need to "expand your horizons" a bit. Try something new! Then, a few years down the road, when the ones you missed the first time are being reissued and you can pick them up, you'll see a post from someone complaining because they can't find Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom, and you can smile to yourself and remember when...

But of course you would never watch it, eh Bruce? Seriously, I never thought I'd live in a world where Gilligan's Island wasn't on the tube every afternoon Monday thru Friday... "Skipper! The Professor finished the power bong!" "Gilligan, you shithead; that's a radio!"

Nah, I've seen 'em up here as well, Matthew, and instinctively knew that I'd be more likely to get authentic flavor from a Swanson's TV dinner...
