What Would You Do In A Hole With $750K (U.S.)?

Now that's funny! Or sad, depending... -
Happy Birthday Phil Kelly!
Jazzmoose replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Another December birthday??? Jesus! Er...I mean... well, happy birthday, anyway... -
Thanks, Berigan! By the way, Jazzdog, I see it's the worst one on your shelf as well! After all, if it's the only one you've got, it pretty much has to be the worst, right? And if you don't know which other ones I've got, how do you know you wouldn't agree? (Okay, if you think it's the best set Mosaic ever produced, I guess you'd think I'm nuts no matter what else I've got.) As far as what others I've got, let's see... Woody Shaw (beats the Mobley for me ONLY because it's the only Shaw I have, and I've got plenty of Hank's stuff.) Phil Woods (which is the one I assume Chuck would put lower) Lee Morgan Curtis Fuller Capitol Jazz Thad Jones New Orleans Jazz Hank Mobley Anita O'Day (if you'd put this one lower I do not want to hear about it! ) Ellington Reprise Teagarden Roulette Mulligan Jazz Concert Band As I've said, I like them all, but if someone put a gun to my head and forced me to pick one to give up, it would probably be the Hank...

Okay, I'll bite...which one on my shelves would you guys rank lower? (Okay, I think I know which one you would say, Chuck...)
-
Hmmm...so much for buying 28 and hitting eBay!
-
No way! That did not happen!!!

Happy birthday, John! Now get back to work on that Blindfold Test! (Is it just me, or are there a heck of a lot of birthdays here in December???)

Fuck him. Now, back to the hookers and blow... -
Gack! The idea of listening to jazz with conversation going on is a bit much. Hell, I always feel the urge to turn around and glare at someone while listening to the CD Misterioso. That jackass clinking his spoon really gets my goat. But not use it in the background at all? I hope it doesn't offend anyone that I have Coltrane's Live at the Village Vanguard playing right now. Admittedly, I'd be doing a lot less backing up and retyping if I turned it off. Come to think of it, I guess it's the bulletin board that's "background" right now...

I guess the lowest on the list from my shelves is still the Mobley. Don't get me wrong, I like it. I guess I just have good luck; I've yet to pick up a Mosaic set that was a , , or even a . They've all been at least and several have been . But enough of that. (Don't have all that much time to post tonight, and I had to use up my smilie quota for the day fast!)

Some damned good points here, guys. Hanging out here, or with people I know who are intensely into reading, music, or whatever, I tend to forget that the average person's idea of entertainment in this culture is to sit passively in front of the television rather than actively pay attention to anything. The concept of an adult reading more than fluff (unless required by work) is simply not normal. Forget about active, concentrated listening... And David, good point. I certainly use jazz as background music. At least when the wife isn't around!

Jeez...I feel like I'm in a fishbowl!

Yeah, I have to agree, Couw; the two discs are a bit much to handle. Of course, the fact that I seem to have misplaced my notes to part of the second disc isn't helping...

This is a puzzling question to me. I've never heard of jazz referred to as background music, so I'm a bit dumbfounded by the question. Of course, the non "jazzfan" I'm most familiar with is my wife, who can't stand the idea of jazz as background music precisely because, as BFrank's coworker says, "it's not soothing". My wife listens to music primarily for the calming effect it gives her, and dislikes most jazz because it's too stressful for her. Of course, her "stress" is my "excitement". I honestly can't understand the concept of jazz as background music. On the other hand, the last comment someone made in my office before I replied with "goodbye" the other day was "that sounds like elevator music". Candyassed heathen shithead...

Any runners on the board?
Jazzmoose replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That's me except for the "lost weight and running again" part. But I'm working on it. I'm only down 10 pounds so far, but I feel like I'm on my way. And when I get down to the level that I feel I'm not going to destroy my knees, I hope to start running again. I never ran seriously (as in actually racing), but just for the joy of running. There's something about being out there alone, feeling like you're about to drop and then breaking through that barrier... As far as "comparing times", I've always felt that if you're competing with anyone other than yourself, you're really missing the point. -

Hmm. Blood circulation or 'roids. Tough choice, but I think I'll take the circulating blood, thank you! -
Here's hoping your birthdays will always have the flavor baked in!! Hope you're day's been good; my life is richer for having met you, even if only on line. And on disc!

Must be some kind of a slugfest? I think the Fistival is something that happens at pornfests. Or, as they'd say on Seinfeld, "a fistivus for the wrist of us"... As for the topic at er...hand, might I point out that Chicago has the best damned sub sandwiches this side of Rigel? (Of course, to be honest, I don't see this Californian making it; just thought I'd bring that up!) (You've got to wonder about someone who edits for a spelling error, and yet leaves that lame joke...)
-
Just taking a guess, Deep, but doesn't the door on the Cheers set open in instead of out? (It's been a long time, but I seem to remember that being the case...)
-
No kidding! Why you guys waste your time with the Babe thread is beyond me!
-
Toss up between the Capitol Jazz set, just because of the sheer variety (plus Kay Starr!!) and the Gerry Mulligan, probably because it's the newest. We'll see...

Sorry 'bout the Ashcroft thing, Clem; just yanking your chain there. I know he's about as far down your list of people as mine. I just thought your demand of "proof" was a bit silly, as "proof" doesn't work that way. Fortunately, we're not in a court of law, so likelyhood is good enough for making our decisions. And sad though this may sound, this jazz neophyte (relatively speaking...) wouldn't know Charlie Patton from Charlie Rich. Yeah, I know; my loss. Just pointing out that I'm not speaking out of any misguided attempt to justify my own purchase or anything.

Is it time to break out the Holiday Avatars yet???
Jazzmoose replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Oh, man, that's one mad lookin' moose, Matthew! -
Well put, David. Clem, if you've got no proof, challenging the accused to prove their innocence is pure bullshit. Angling for a job with Ashcroft?
