  1. First the link to information: The Link to Information... I know a few of you are from the SF Bay area; anyone going? I'll be there on Sunday; I'll be the old fat guy with the Monk tshirt and the woman who looks like she made a big mistake agreeing to go to a jazz show...
  2. TWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETT! Forum police here; what's all this then?
  3. Mathew, the problem most of us have is NOT "quoting within the quote"! Anyway, all you do is "quote" an entire post by hitting the quote link in that post. Then neglect to delete anything, and there you have it! What "it" is, we're not sure...
  4. Tom who?
  5. And Jimmy, if you want a response to the chickenshit you posted, by all means, please come to the political threads also. However, we're housebroken here. We try to keep the political crap on that forum specifically. If that seems a bit too difficult for you, this may not be the place to post...
  6. I know; I remember. Hence my "laugh out loud" smilie!
  7. No way I can vote on this one! If Cool Struttin' or Out to Lunch was there...
  8. Maybe they've "outgrown their server" or something. I've never had a problem before tonight, but then I'm not there as much as I'm here. Or something like that...
  9. Mine, which changes occasionally, is of course, always a moose of some sort. (The black and white cat I used for a while is my cat, Moose.)
  10. I have no idea what the "next step" will be, but as for the future worth of CDs, my guess is that the obscure recordings will have value, but I don't see any passion for the format as a whole existing the way it does for vinyl today.
  11. I just tried, to access a PM someone sent me there, and nada.
  12. Well, I agree with this to a point; the problem is, why do we still look at race as a big issue in picking "our kind"? The normal assumption is that it's always been this way, but that's not so. Prior to the development of the slave trade (referring to the European/African version; the internal African version was a whole different thing), racism wasn't an issue. Africans were around with the Greeks, the Romans, hell...the Catholic Church even had African saints (see Saint Morris, although you have to look for an illustration made prior to the slave trade; after it started, he became whiter and whiter, sort of an early Michael Jackson I suppose!).
  13. I must admit, that does sound useful. Finding out about European jazz is a difficult task in this country.
  14. Woooohooooooo!!! Happy birthday, dude!
  15. Oh, no one pays attention to Mickelson at this point; after all he *cough*...oops; sorry...I started choking on something...
  16. I agree, Brad; the book pretty much sits on the shelf collecting dust now, but it certainly got a lot of use for a while. However, I still use the on-line version whenever I venture into something new. As an example, it's helping with my recent Parliament/Funkadelic obsession. Judging by the comments here, I don't think I'll be buying the Penguin guide. Jazz is one area where an "in print only" guide would be absolutely worthless as a guide. If it's a good read, fine, but if it can't meet it's stated purpose, what's the point?
  17. Ha! That sure sounds familiar; now who does that remind me of....
  18. In addition to the stars being used for comparison among a single artist's work, it seems quite apparent that either a) most AMG reviewers suffer from some form of schizophrenia, or B) the write-ups and the "starring" are done by different people. I'm too darned lazy to research this, but I'm sure I've seen discs that were written off, then given mucho stars alongside ones that were praised highly but shorted in the star rating. That said, I voted for Lee's Rumproller. As far as I'm concerned, of his "normal" discs (?!) this is the best. Overall, I prefer it to Cornbread and definitely to Sidewinder. On the other hand, I'll take The Procrastinator, Search for the New Land, and the live 3CD set over any of them...
  19. Groovy, you're going to regret posting that...

My only exposure to her vocals are on Lovano's Celebrating Sinatra. It's my least favorite Lovano disc, and no, it's not a coincidence.

Chris, I heard stuff previewed from the box set on a special program KCSM ran during their last pledge drive; in fact that was my big exposure to Nina Simone. Rest assured, the box set pretty much is my wantlist right now. It's a definite buy for me, and I can't wait!
  22. Well, naturally I agree with Paul on this one. The thing is, we're here because we're jazz fans, but we do have other interests that we enjoy sharing. It's a lot easier to find people willing to discuss politics on a jazz board than it is to find people willing to discuss jazz on a political board. So, we do it here among friends. Sure, things get heated sometimes (you should have seen the PMs Paul and I started with on the BNBB! Better yet, you shouldn't... ), but I think most of us can handle it. I agree you've been beating this drum pretty loudly and regularly for quite a while now, Brad, but I don't understand why. You say you manage to avoid the political threads yourself; why not let those of us who enjoy them to continue?
