  1. Yeah, mine are that color and came "upside down" as well. They look so weird "right side up" that I usually flip them over each time I play the set. So however they are now, they'll be the opposite next time I play them...
  2. That's not a woman, berigan, that's a little girl...
  3. I agree, couw. It seemed as though Lee was finally able to convince Blue Note that it was time to move on from the Sidewinder clones and get back to exploring. Fantastic stuff. And then he was gone...
  4. Well, let me be the first clueless poster to say I've never heard of them. Do they have a website I can investigate? Sounds like the gang over at the Bix board...
  5. danasgoodstuff, I'm afraid to look at those named after reading this...
  6. Oh my god...I've absolutely lost my mind...
  7. Man, that's some heavy shit...
  8. I think that the sports analogy is perfect, Dan. When we look at a journeyman player (I don't follow the game anymore, but people like Tony Phillips come to mind), we see them as second rate "never was" players, and forget just how good these guys had to be just to make it to the majors at all. I mean, hell; Michael Jackson couldn't make it past double A, and even that was a gift. Still, you can't help taking the term as an insult, especially when it's one of your favorites being tagged...
  9. So, I take it that "$280,000" was the wrong direction to move the decimal point...
  10. Does anyone know what the "buy it now" price was?
  11. I wouldn't rate this one as high as Search for the New Land, but I'd put it at a solid #2 on my Mogie list. Of course, I have a bias for larger bands...
  12. Personally, I think the best way to "watch" the Oscars is to read the "who won" list in the paper the next day anyway...
  13. You said it. Although I never cared for the basic metal stuff anyway, except for Black Sabbath when I was in my teens. If I'm in the mood for gut wrenching rock, I'd rather hear early Blue Oyster Cult or Led Zeppelin. Maybe Pretty Things. I dunno...AC/DC was really kind of "after my time", and I feel that it's a group that, if you don't have the nostalgia angle working for you, it seems awfully simple minded. Even the stuff I did listen to I rarely touch these days...
  14. I haven't seen it yet, but want to. The wife's dragging her legs over it; I'll have to use up one of my "my turn to pick the movie" cards. Darn; I like to save those for something really odd...
  15. The one that stands out in my mind was when I took Intro to Jazz at the local community college (at the time I had five jazz CDs; three Coltranes, Kind of Blue, and Time Out) and blew a question on a test by confusing Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. I don't know how, dammit!
  16. Yeah, yeah, yeah; and to those of us familiar with American history, it reminded us of The Beatles and Lennon's comments, or maybe "Disco Destruction" at Comiskey in '79. Ah...those were the days!
  17. Yeah, but you weren't there the day we thought the boss said RAISES for everyone, and then held up a box labeled "Sun Maid"!
  18. I would think Kenny would fit in better in the soup section. Maybe Kenny's chicken (endless)noodling soup...
  19. Well, I must admit I'm beginning to agree with you. The song Here Am I, which I adored, really doesn't hold up that well to repeated listenings. I still like the baritone a lot more than you do, but... I'll have to give it a rest for a bit (and start concentrating on "Wahne"!), but I think I'll give it another listen Friday and see what I think.
  20. I find the this board in general more good natured than the B**B.Let's invite Pharoahrock and DEEP... over from AAJ for some sensible and considered debate Why I oughta...
  21. Well...I guess it's no secret what I think of the political threads. I'm glad we've got them, I just wish we could stay on politics and away from the personal attacks. I thought we had it down at first, but I don't know... I must admit, I've been drifting away from the "both boards" approach and just coming here lately. Like Soul Stream, I guess the lower activity level is a plus, although I wouldn't mind a wee bit more. I don't know; this place just feels like home, ya know?
  22. I'm disappointed. I waited close to twenty four hours to see how this post would turn out, and this is all I get? BOO!
  23. Well, either I don't hear it, Jim, or I don't really know what you're talking about (entirely possible!), but thanks for the excuse to dig out the two CDs anyway!
  24. I, on the other hand, find Pepper Adams to be the glue that holds this session together. I didn't have this previously, so I've been giving the disc some serious hard core "cram" listening over the last two days. Keep this in mind, as my opinion could change over time... I'm not that familiar with Byrd's work, my only previous exposure is 10 to 4 at the 5 Spot. I'm definitely impressed with his work, although it's Pepper Adams' baritone that stands out on this album for me. The contrast between Adams and Rouse is quite interesting. I'm not as familiar as I should be with Walter Davis, Jr., obviously, as some of his solos are intriguing. I'll have to look farther. Overall, this group seems to me to have more of a connection to bebop than most hard bop I've heard. Here Am I and Clarion Calls stand out as true gems in my mind, particularly Here Am I. This is one of those tunes that I'm sure I'll be listening to for years, until I am thoroughly sick of it! Love it! Witchcraft doesn't cut it for me, but that's not the fault of the artists involved. I was brainwashed on this one at an early age, and as is the case with All or Nothing at All, if Frankie ain't singing, then I'm not on board. The Injuns leaves me cold. While the solos are nice, the head leaves me with the same feeling I get as a Braves fan when I see the "tomahawk chop". Call it rampant PC if you wish, but it just sounds like a joke to me. I agree with Paul; they should have just done Cherokee. All in all, a very enjoyable album, even if for me it was one song too long. The only question I have now is, why haven't I ordered the Mosaic yet???
  25. Yeah, that was a classic! As to my question, guys, yes it was black and white. Betty Boop? Well, I guess it could have been; it was long ago enough that I may have forgotten that. And I always thought it sounded like Cab. I'll have to track it down and see if this is it. Hope so!
