Seriously? Exactly how much research did it take you to figure out who he was talking about? Admittedly, Blue Train has only seen this behavior for a couple of years, while a lot of us have seen it for over a decade, but I don't think anyone who's been here two years would need that much research to figure out that this is going on, and that some people get a break for one reason or another (I can't really complain; I know I've been allowed some slack here at times). I have to admit though, that the only time I've been really bothered by any moderation activity was when a certain poster was allowed back on after being banned twice. I'm sure this will offend whoever did it, and I'm sorry, but that was a bonehead move.

See, that's the kind of thinking that turns off the noobs. Just remember this one rule: You do NOT have to answer every question! Let some of the more recent members answer them if you don't want to rehash them. I never comment on "what should I buy" threads, because I'm not really into that either. I guarantee there are people out there who aren't new to jazz, but haven't been listening to it for twenty years either and would love to share their knowledge. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As for the comments on duplicate threads, oh yeah, I agree; if a thread is still on the first page, without any search even required, it does look pretty lazy. I wasn't thinking about that kind of thing, but the expectation that a new visitor is expected to search the entire board to make sure his topic hasn't been posted before prior to posting. Plus, keep this in mind: some new people post something just to try to be 'part of the gang' rather than actually trying to find out something. Yeah, it's silly, but you can't ignore it, either.

How many degrees are you from Kevin Bacon?

I had two strips this morning, so I'm pretty connected right now. Okay, I checked and the best I could find was 3, having sold comic books to Bill Mumy in the past. -
My guess is that when you see yourself sliding into insignificance, you can get a little unhinged, particularly when the cause is shooting your own foot. Repeatedly.

I have to admit, that's worse than having the phone number one digit off from Dominos. Someone will probably track him down and shoot him, then spend the rest of their life on death row wondering why they didn't get a medal...

Near perfect. Hold the coke. -
The main advantage I see to not worrying about duplicate threads is that it encourages those not only new to the board, but those new to jazz. The boards I go to that seem to be growing, living boards don't worry about duplicate threads, and newbies seem to stick around a lot more, growing in knowledge and in contributing to the board. The boards that worry about duplicate threads and insist that newbies use the search feature, post on the appropriate thread, etc., seem to run of the noobs quickly, and soon become an "old gang" board. I agree with Tom Storer in that, in this day of facebook, bulletin boards may be up against it, but there are boards that are doing fine. Of course, the other advantage to not worrying about duplicate threads is less work for you... I did this, sort of. I flunked out my first go 'round. When I went back, it was incredible. I didn't mind being one of the older guys. The 'normal aged' students just think it's cute that old farts can struggle through the material, and don't even seem to notice that it's usually the geezers that end up at the top of the class. Of course, wanting to learn rather than going because it was expected made a big difference; I just wasn't ready for college the first time around.

Wow. We're all a bunch of great friends until someone points out a couple of oddities here. Then it's cast out the unbeliever time. I think Blue Train has some valid points. This isn't a living, growing board, it's a group that's mainly known each other for years, with a new stalwart joining fairly infrequently. Personally, I have no problem with this; none of us is going to live forever, who says the board will? On the other hand, if you're concerned about that and want the board to live far into the future, I think it's a completely valid concern. As for the 'multiple thread' rule, yeah, I'd say 'silly' is the perfect description. Things like that, or snide "search is your friend" comments are exactly the kind of thing that alienate new members, causing them to just say fuck it and leave. It's such a classic spinster school marm reaction that it crosses the line well into silly.

I finally tried one; I had an itch that needed scratching and downloaded a package of H.P. Lovecraft. On my computer it was...okay, so I borrowed one to try for a day. I'll pass. It has the feel of Pong when it came out in the seventies: someday this might be interesting, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks. It's hell being so old you think you don't have to worry about that until Thanksgiving, and then only to pick the Cowboys and whoever plays the Lions... -

I agree. He tied that old guy's record as the only player to win two different years! -
I was thinking the same thing. Monty Python and The Holy Grail is far funnier, IMHO. I guess I'm out of step again. For me, the funniest thing about Holy Grail was the opening credits. Life of Brian, on the other hand, I consider a classic from start to finish. Interesting. I can't see a 20 something rating Airplane that high. I mean, it's hard to "look back" at Airplane through the veil of Top Secret and other such garbage without blaming Airplane, whereas fresh and standing on it's own it's freekin' hilarious. I had the same experience watching Beavis and Butthead Do America; a theater full of people staggering out, still laughing, barely able to walk. On the other hand, it's definitely a 'theater movie'; doesn't do much on it's own at home in the DVD player...

In my opinion, at least on first viewing, Airplane is indeed the funniest movie ever. There's no way to isolate it from the slew of imitations that followed, none of which came near (it's a 'funny once' joke), but caught by it unexpectedly, it was absolutely hilarious. That's a questionable way of determining the 'funniest' film IMHO - the quality of the laugh (volume, duration, sincerity) should be taken into account. Not to mention the fact that a laugh is not the only way of displaying amusement - I rarely laugh in a cinema and prefer to just smirk, and then maybe laugh later when I'm walking home (which raises another problem - how do they know that people are laughing at the film playing, and not at the memory of another, funnier film) We're not talking amusement here, we're talking laugh-out-loud funny. Completely different animal. As far as amusement, just watching the scenes of Casablanca with Claude Rains is more amusing, but for funny, I'll take Airplane.

Glad I got that "undefeated season" thing over with quickly before it became a big monkey... -
Janet Watson made me like math. None of you can top that. I went from automatic brain shutdown whenever the word 'algebra' is mentioned to someone who actually enjoyed solving math problems. If she had been Catholic, she'd already have one miracle in the bag.
