  1. Wewerka has done it again, this time moving further east and further out. Yez.
  2. Knapsack?

Still haven't picked up the WBAI stuff. It might be a while. Anyone here rabid about it?
  4. Oops: typo. "Jack" Hylton. But, who knows, maybe his wife called him Jack-y.
  5. Chuck gets seasick really fast.
  6. Listening to the Jacky Hylton right now. This disc gets better and better with each spin. The trumpet player, whoever he is, is doing his best Bix! (I guess I should go check the liners.) Is the newly reissued NORK set available anywhere? I've looked around online and have come up empty so far. That's the next Retrieval that I'm purchasing.
  7. DMP — I'd check out Hackett's sides under the Classics (France) label. Some great music there (and, yes, with a few clinkers peppered into the mix).
  8. B&W's are great. I only have bookshelf B&W's, but I've listened to towers in a stereo store's listening room. I think you'll be happy with them, in both your current residence and future (larger) residences. Perhaps a little sound-proofing (those foam wedges etc.) might help focus the sound in a smaller room so that the towers don't overpower your listening experience.
  9. Dang. I missed this thread when LOST SESSIONS was available. I want to hear the Dameron stuff.
  10. Montg(omery?) — I know exactly that feeling of "Wha? Where have I been? This stuff is great!" I first experienced Mulligan with Baker twelve years ago, and it's now been a long-standing affair. Those two, though they may not have gotten along so charmingly, had an almost telepathic kinship. I think you'll really like the Mosaic Select, especially the "Reunion" session that includes Henry Grimes. When/if you decide to delve further into "West Coast" material, you might also like: • Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band (Mosaic) • Gerry Mulligan Sextet (availalbe through Fresh Sounds, or in pricier but better sounding Japanese editions) • Bob Gordon/Jack Montrose (Fresh Sounds or the old West Coast Classics edition) • Jon Eardley (the now OOP stuff on OJC/Concord) ... and, of course, much more. Mostly, enjoy the adventure! An enormous amount of good music came out of California at that time.
  11. (Gulp) I own no Lifetime recordings. What I've heard, though, I've liked. So ... if you (we) all were to guess, what Miles Davis release (minus remixes and/or best-ofs) do you think we'll see next? A 2-disc set of the Juan les Pins stuff? Something else? (Bill Evans' recorded ruminations driving home in his car after the KoB session?)
  12. I'm pretty sure it was postage stamps.
  13. I gigged with Gore Vidal once. Kind of. We were scheduled to read at the same time at the same literary festival. Guess who was looking at multiple empty seats ...

    Dave Burrell

Didn't even know about the La Boheme effort. I'd like to hear it. What Burrell does with West Side Story is pretty engaging. Heck, I'd listen to Burrell play cop show themes. And, yes, I wish another round of BYGs could come out, too. Probably will happen at some point. For now, the Thurston Moore-approved box will do.

That line-up looks great. How were the two drummers together?
  16. Agreed. If you can only have one Parlan, this be it.
  17. Fine words from Mr. Tapscott. I'm in full agreement. Lon — oops, you're right. Maybe I'll end up selling my original Lighthouse cds now ... I haven't even opened the Lighthouse part of the Mosaic. I just blindly assumed the whole thing was McMastered, and focused in on the other parts. And those "other parts" have taken up my attention for some time now! Oh yes — I just want to say that Jan Hammer's tune called "Lungs" on the Mosaic ... I love that track. Hammer can play when he wants to.
  18. The "Happy Birthday" track can easily be skipped. Terrible "singing." The plus to the original Lighthouse cd issues (which are "complete"), however, is that Malcolm Addey did the transfers/remastering. I dunno, I think the Elvin set is a must-have. I doubt Blue Note will re-reissue much of it as time goes along. Cuscuna's been on record more than once stating that Elvin just doesn't sell. Perhaps The Ultimate or Coalition could make it to a Connoisseur batch some time, but even that seems unlikely. I think it's one of those situations where, after you physically have the set, you feel great relief — you have it! Waitaminnut ... I thought this set was already OOP ...
  19. This isn't going to be very helpful, but there's a copy of West 42nd Street here. I've always liked this one a little more than Bartz's other Candid. But the Dameron covers on Neighborhood make it worth hearing.
  20. This music actually made it to compact disc? Bootleg, or legitimate release?

    Red Norvo

This one remains my favorite Norvo. The Classics label is always enjoyable (if not always sonically up to par with Hep, Frog, etc.), and this disc has Betty Boop on it — literally!
  22. Damn, Chuck, what were you doing in Alaska? Or, for that matter, Oregon?

    Frank Wright

Nope. Not to the best of my knowlege. It was reissued recently on LP, though. Same for Kenneth Terroade's BYG session. Too bad those couldn't have also seen CD reissue.
  24. Not to mention making absolutely no grammatical/semantic sense ... I actually don't even know what they're trying to communicate with that phrase/comment/belch.
  25. Just Shelia on this one, but if you don't have it already ... find a way to acquire Roswell Rudd's Flexible Flyer. An unusual, and beautiful, record.
