  1. Alexander, when you get there, leave L.A. for last. San Francisco is much more interesting. Chuck, you crack me up sometimes. Almost as much as Lester (Bowie).
  2. I knew that was coming.
  3. Um, the furthest east I've ever been is Georgia. Or South Dakota. Whichever makes it further right on the map. Some day, hopefully, I will make it to NY. Until then, I will remain way out west.
  4. Unagi sushi. Lots of wine to go with. Wife's pulling a late one at work. I'm home with the cats. Ayler's at top volume. The cats don't seem to mind.

Fuh-udge. (At least we have Conglitptious. That's my favorite set from the AEC box.)

As far as should'ves go, they should've reissued Arthur Jones' Scorpio when those America discs came out. That one is The Poop. (Well, I've actually only heard the track "Brother B" from it ... ... but if the rest is as good — )
  7. First I'm stocking up on apples and fig newtons. I'll bring them into the store with me ... then I'm gonna clear out the Fiona A. and Wayne N. sections. And I won't even wait for 40% off! (Waiting for Jazzmoose's response ... )
  8. "... is treated is to make re-use something more special and treated with respect" Um, what the hell does that mean?
  9. I'm still waiting for Columbia to re-remaster and reissue the big band set. The old Legacy issues with the border were ... :bwallace2:
  10. Michel LeGrand's LeGrand Jazz has at least three covers.
  11. I've held off from visiting the darkfunk page for the Corea/Holland stuff in hopes that this period might see Columbia/Legacy reissue ... but maybe I should stop waiting?
  12. Ask Vince. This guy? I guess I don't know the Vince of which you referreth.

    Sonny Fortune

Is the Fortune box set on CDBaby a simple repackaging of the Blue Note material — meaning, actual Blue Note cds in a slipcase, or is it an altogether different format? Listened to some sound samples, and while I'm not exactly keen on Fortune's Monk reworkings, I like the other material.
  14. aka — I'd say Bailey's playing is fairly "straight" here, and unobtrusively so (kinda like Jimmy Cobb), but not really boring per se. Tony Williams he isn't, but that doesn't seem the point of this record. The whole album's never really fiery, but Land doesn't simply toss off solos on automatic. The "modal" vein of the proceedings has him thinking, and his improvisations are, at least to me, full of interest. So, The Peace-Maker is not "intense," if you're looking for that, but neither is it dull. Hutcherson, as always, is in good form, too.
  15. What will be next? And what might we anticipate? Will the "lost quintet" stuff actually see release on Legacy?
  16. Don, I dig your current avatar. That's Brignola, no?
  17. Is this a Columbia/Legacy release, or something more murky?
  18. Though I shouldn't trouble the waters with any K2 speak, let me just say that the Japanese K2 (as there never was a domestic edition) of In Action is awesome, both musically (of course) and sonically. I got mine from Hiroshi (1800¥) and don't regret it for a moment. It's a great record — with great cover art, incidentally. The Messengers date with Monk is also a good recommendation. I don't play that one enough. The Penguin Guide gives it a crown, and it's well deserving of one. I think Johnny Griffin understood/gelled with Monk just as well as, if not sometimes better than, Charlie Rouse.
  19. I think I'll wait until 20%, and then clear out their Fiona Apple section.
  20. If you can still find it, I'd pick up the Complete Prestige Recordings box set. It's small (2, 3 discs?) and digestible, and contains some of my favorite Monk. It also has some recordings Monk made with Coleman Hawkins. A big .
  21. Has anyone here heard Carlos Ward's work on the PeullMusic label? (I've never even heard of that label.) Cadence lists two leader dates: "Faces" and "Live at The Bug."
  22. The closest Tower to me is 110 miles away.
  23. Farrell's Outback kicks my gluteus maximus. That last track — thazwh'mtokkinbowg. And Chick Corea's comping is perfect on this one. Mr. Farrell, I didn't know you were on this board, but I really like that record.

    Henry Grimes

Thanks for the photographs, Mark. Is that the bass (in its down parka) that William Parker gave Grimes?
  25. Damn, I think this is a great record. I've never really liked Harold Land's playing, but this side made me revise my opinion. If you like Land with Hutcherson, my guess is that you'll like this one a lot. I actually like the harmonica feature a lot — it doesn't even sound like harmonica on the album, but rather a melodica. I swear you can hear keys being depressed. At any rate, I wanted to give this one a vote of confidence. I think it fits comfortably with a recording like Medina/Spiral. (And I personally find it more enjoyable than Total Eclipse.)
