  1. I'm in agreement with the sentiment that Zoot Sims recorded some of his finest playing—perhaps his most creative improvisations—for Pablo. I think in the Pablo records you're hearing Zoot as he wanted to be heard.

    Sivuca

I don't have any Sivuca albums. I've been listening to some on YouTube though. Right now, I'm taken with the early Barclay records. I wish I had this particular disc. Recommendations for further exploration? (And anyone else sometimes mistakenly confuse Sivuca with Hermeto?)
  3. (Now I wonder what cocktail TTK would recommend for such a party.)
  4. Some day, I want to attend a party where Live Evil is played in full on the hi-fi. Cocktails preferred, but optional.

Lee Morgan is a cloven-hoofed Dionysus.
  6. The Song Is You
  7. That is a thought that lingers in one's mind. So many people receive attention only after they're gone.
  8. Listening to the February 15, 1957 "Arthur Phipps Session" right now. The ballads are perhaps the highlight. Jackie's Prestige work ages well, contrary to conventional wisdom.

  11. I don't know what streaming service, or satellite radio, my local grocery store subscribes to, but it has been playing a lot of Blue Note titles in the last year or so. Today, while standing in the bulk section, I heard "Good Old Soul" from True Blue and "Somethin' Special" from Leapin' & Lopin'. I knew the track from the Sonny Clark album right away, but it took me a while to place the Tina Brooks album—I kept thinking I was hearing something from a Freddie Hubbard album. Any other grocers spinning Blue Notes? I wonder if my store will eventually get to Conquistador. Probably not.
  12. The 1972 Ljublijana date? As long as Resonance keeps issuing live Bill Evans sessions, I hope they some day get to the 1979 Balboa Jazz Club gig. (I always have to remind myself: not Balboa Island in California, but a club named Balboa in Madrid, Spain). Evans' last trio was sensational.
  13. “Jazz music and jazz dancing in schools should be stopped at once,” Baumgartner said during a debate on finances. “I have seen a lot of rough dancing in school auditoriums lately." “What is jazz?” asked board member Percy H. Moise. “I’ve only seen a little bit of it, but it was awful,” replied a third member, Henry C. Schaumburg.
  14. Slated for release on or around April 29. Looking forward to hearing these.
  15. Much agreed. (Emphasis mine.)
  16. There are two other records that I tend to think of as part of some (imagined) trilogy with Orthodox Dub, one of them by Errol Brown: Just as good as Orthodox Dub. ImportCDs still carries it. The other album seems much harder to find. It is: For this type of music, at least in my limited exposure, it doesn't get much better. p.s. I love this song. Had Ranglin been on, say, Blue Note ... well ... what a player.
  17. Haven't spun this in probably 15 years. Yikes! Spinning it now. Always better than I think.
  18. For those interested in the roots of ska, rocksteady, and early Jamaican music in general, I highly recommend checking out Dub Store Records. The label is based out of a store in Tokyo, and has a website. I'm not sure if they're still operating, but many of their releases (besides the numerous 45 singles) came out on compact disc in the 2010's and are terrific. One compilation I recommend is Kentone Ska From Federal Records: Another excellent "dub" instrumental record is Errol Brown's Orthodox Dub. (For Bauhaus fans—you'll hear where they got some of their inspiration.) Anybody else here familiar with Dub Store? Their discs are fairly expensive and mostly out-of-print, but ImportCDs still carries a fair amount.

    Pharoah Sanders

Really enjoying this one today: This thread has some good reading from 15 years ago.
  21. Going off on a tangent here, but I can't get enough of this album recently:
  22. I checked the credits for Station '70, and it's also a 23 minute disc. First track is "Thursday/Gradually Projection" (18:36); second track is "Jha/Mass Projection" (4:48). Recording date is June 18, 1970 (track 1), and "May or June" 1970 (track 2).
  23. Eastern Moods
  24. I think you're right. I have that disc but haven't spun it enough. Do you have Station '70 and Live At Jazzbed? Both are Masayuki Takayanagi albums, but Abe's on both. Some of Abe's most focused work in my opinion.
  25. I find I spin these two Turrentine albums more than his small group recordings. Musical and fun!
