  1. Nice! I checked Discogs and the 3-disc Japanese set and the 2-disc U.S. set appear to have the same number of tracks (23) ... ? I need to spin this set again soon ...
  2. Just click on that YouTube link (above) and let it spin ... It's currently available at CD Japan and Dusty Groove (and likely many other places as well). 1500¥. The opening of the first track reminds me of The Solar Myth Approach. Later on there's definitely a Mingus vibe. I haven't heard that one! Must.
  3. Three compact discs? I have the 2-disc set that Concord put out; didn't know there was a 3-disc set. Regardless, a favorite; it's nice to hear Red's working trio. M-Squad!
  4. Bringing things (at least momentarily) back on topic ... fans of Japanese Jazz need to hear this album: Jazz Orchestra '73 If this album were a cocktail (of influences), then the mixture might be, in nearly equal parts: • Sun Ra • Charles Mingus • Woody Herman • Toshiko Akiyoshi • Henry Threadgill (possibly) Terumasa Hino has some standout solos.
  5. I don't know how this turned into a HEINO thread, but I'll go with it ... For a second, he looks like a young Bill Clinton. Star Parade, 1968.
  6. I will keep the faith! (Would be nice to add to my existing order ... )
  7. The quintet tracks are on Rediscovered Masters, Vol. 2. Oliver Nelson + Richard Williams on horns. Discogs One of the hippest version of "East of The Sun" as well ...
  8. Who's the baritone saxophonist? Looks like Al Cohn's cousin.
  9. Definitely should have been in a Bond film.
  10. Never has 3:06 felt so long. Good choice.
  11. Still not on CD Japan's site. Maybe they're not going to carry these particular titles. Dusty Groove wins!

    Jimmy Giuffre

Anyone here have this Giuffre recording? It looks like a bootleg, but it's actually a release on Francesco Fini's small FINI JAZZ label. I believe it's the only recording where you can hear Giuffre's composition "Princess." Sound is acceptable for a live recording. The woman on the cover is Fini's mother! Nobody knew she was hiding out in the bell of Giuffre's clarinet.
  13. You might like Rediscovered Masters, Vol. 1. More Barreto there. Garland possessed the same knack as Sonny Rollins for transforming kitschy melodies ("The Five O'Clock Whistle") into platforms for swing.
  14. The second half of the (double) album posted above contains Monk covers. I haven't really investigated it yet. That's a good answer!
  15. And who says that improvising without chord changes serves no purpose!

I don't actually know. All I know is that they rehearsed together as a group at Giuffre's home circa 1966.
  17. This album is kicking my ass. Still haven't gotten to the Thelonious section. If you were like me all these years, DON'T be. This is a great album.

    That looks pretty good.
  19. Extraction, meaning, how to extract your (gossipy) neighbor from your Thursday afternoon tea social. Amen.
  20. Same. I used to play "Fire Waltz" on repeat my senior year in college until the neighbors upstairs (politely) asked me to stop.
  21. I noticed that too. The expression of pathos on Bud's face throughout the film is powerful. At times it chokes me up.
  22. Wow. Didn't know that. I looked for it on YouTube, but came up empty. I did find this, which I'd watched once many years ago and then forgotten about: Love Dexter's voice ...

  24. Looks like a good machine! My Rotel is still going strong, but I've bookmarked this as something to look at down the road.
