  1. I've been noticing that the price on used Garland titles (and a number of OJCs for that matter) on eBay and Amazon has been going up. Even the eBay seller "decluttr" has steeper than usual prices. I'm always wary of purchasing OJCs new these days — it seems, more often than not, they end up being CDRs. ImportCDs unfortunately sells OJC CDRs now (with no mention of such). Most (?) new Keepnews Series compact discs these days appear to be CDRs as well.
  2. "Completed"?

John Coltrane is in fact: • Clean Horn Jot • Colon, Then Jar • Neon Arch Jolt

That's easy. It's: Thin Sneering Personnel Deeds

I'm in the Anagram Vortex. I just discovered that Miles Dewey Davis is, among other contortions: • Dismayed Weevils • We Advised Smiley • Semi Deadly Wives • My Swiveled Ideas And what do other artists conjure?
  6. The Internet Anagram Server tells me that Plas Johnson is at least: • Jan "Nosh" Slop • Son "Slap" John • John "Naps" Slo ... and many, many others.
  7. I haven't heard the Birigwa records, but I noticed that they have Stan Strickland on them. He plays some excellent tenor on this Marty Ehrlich record: I go hot and cold on Ehrlich records, but this one is worth seeking out. Excellent playing all around.
  8. You're right. Here's the SEEDS cover: And the Earthforms cover: SEEDS on Discogs.
  9. I wouldn't be surprised if, about seven years from now, we see a public domain issue of this quartet's work. Who knows, it might be the only way that the music gets collected and compiled. For now, I'm happy to listen to the music on YouTube and the one vinyl rip I have.
  10. True. Not taking anything away from those Debut releases, but there may have been Milestone sessions ... worthier of release. Ah well. We want it all!
  11. Aha! Found it. Check this Japanese edition's cover: Bottom left, though it takes a microscope to see it, it says: Design: Reid Miles Photo: Bill Connors I had to enlarge the image a number of times. Even then it was hard to decipher.
  12. Nommo is pretty nice. Interesting to compare the tune with its version on the Morgan Lighthouse set.
  13. I wish they would have plumbed the Milestone catalog a bit more. This one could have been reissued: It's available on Amazon as an mp3, but Ran Blake himself posted a review to let fans know that it was a lo-fi needle drop, done without his knowledge.
  14. 5 Minutes That Will Make You Love the Cello (as if you didn't already)!
  15. I noticed that too. Doesn't sound scholarly at all!
  16. Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. I have a vinyl rip of the album that I've listened to for years. The session sounds like it was recorded in a large hall with no one ever getting very close to a mike. Tchicai's alto comes through cleanly but still recessed. The percussion sound is often muddy. Lower horns are also recessed but still fairly clear. It's definitely an album that takes some adjusting to — both musically and sonically. Maybe after a few more spins your ears will begin to "accept" the album's recessed quality (e.g. "Why did you have to record on the other side of the airplane hangar, John?"), and then the album will be more enjoyable. But, I understand, first impressions count for a lot.
  17. In that case, let's hope there are 1966/67 Coltrane reels NOT where they should be!
  18. Off the top of my head ... it would make Patterns, Spiral, Medina, and Total Eclipse available to a wider audience. Not a bad thing. Could even be interpreted as humanitarian! Now that you mention it, I seem to recall reading that here. But I would've never guessed that Mosaic would release a Henderson Blue Note set ...
  19. True. But the Costlane version is vegan. As long as you know.
  20. The YouTube teaser is quite effective. Dig all those photos of Lee at the beach!
  21. I'm guessing they do, only because I vaguely remember, back in the BNBB days, Cuscuna entertaining its release during the Connoisseur days. (I hope my brain is not playfully making that up.)
  22. First you have to find the Cost Lane (8 items or fewer) at Costco. They don't make it easy.
  23. 2026 is slowly approaching. The Coltrane Centennial. Ravi has 4.5 years to scour the attic and look under the bed for mislabeled reel-to-reels! Careful, those contain the September 1965 Village Gate recordings with Carlos Ward!
  24. Please — that's Alive Costlane! (But at least you got her first name right.)
