  1. Listening to Torre explain the reasoning was comical and all interpretational. Torre says he's looking at it to see if it was a dirty slide. Whst does that mean? Game is over, they lost a SS and the game.
  2. The call on that piece of shit Utley should have been interference and a DP called. He was there to hurt and this goes back to the Phillies and the Mets. No love lost there. Harvey hit Utley earlier this year and Utley tried to hurt Tejada a few years ago. Swift retribution is needed. However, I'm guessing both benches will be warned before game 3. Mets players are angry and there is bad blood now.
  3. Funny you mention Angel Hernandez. Going back to god knows when, the Mets think he's had it in for them. Wonder how many other teams think that. Bob Davidson is another terrible ump. Why they let him back in is besides me.
  4. Yes, they have but in over 50 years of watching, there was more predictability to it than there is now. Some calls I saw in last night's Mets game made me shake my head. However, you can't ask for any more as long as they're consistent in calling it the way they do
  5. Put it in the books! Mets take game 1
  6. I've been watching games a long time and had a pretty good idea of the strike zone. In the last couple of years, with the way they call it today, I have no idea anymore.
  7. Every away team has won so far. Let's hope this trend continues through tomorrow night ;)
  8. Brad, I too was at that game, and I too ran onto the field! When the fans chanted, "We want Short!", I sensed (for the only time in my life) a vibe that bordered on violence. I believe that if he had attended the game, he would have been killed. Of all the games that I've attended over the years, that's the one I remember the most. As I recall (which could be shaky), the Yankees held the lead through the middle of the 8th. Then a couple of fans ran onto the field. The crowd was warned that if it happened again, there would be a forfeit. In the bottom of the 8th, the Senators grabbed the lead, maybe 3-2 or 4-3, don't exactly remember. Comes the top of the 9th. Bang! It was like a jail break. Hundreds, thousands, ran onto the field. Everything was taken: bases, lights from the scoreboard, you name it. I ran onto the field too, but too late for any souvenirs. I saw some people ripping out seats. My thought at the time was that some Redskins fans wouldn't have seats to sit on Sunday. Amazing scene, to say the least. And, yes, had the fans seen Short they definitely would've assaulted him. They're there all kinds of signs in the ballpark like "Short sucks." Unforgettable. ****** As you can see from Jim's stats, the Cubs killed the Mets this year. The only thing I can say is that it wasn't against the team that was changed at the trading deadline: no Wright, Cespedes, Kelly Johnson or Conforto. Not much to hang your hopes on but better than nothing. Of course, both teams have to get there first.
  9. Looks like Pirates are screwed. Heck, they were screwed after the top of the 1st.
  10. I know you don't like the Angels, which is understandable because the Rangers and Angels are division rivals and my son who is a big Angels fan and Trout fan hates the Rangers, which is also understandable. What I don't get is these comments about Trout, just the greatest player in the game today, along with Harper. The Angels announcers creepy? Now, the TV guys are not that great (at least compared to the Mets announcers) but I like the radio guy Terry Smith. Think he does a pretty good job. Fans just lord it over other fans, that's just the nature of the beast. BTW, I went to school in DC and was at the last game the Senators played at RFK when they forfeited to the Yanks. One of the most unforgettable games I've ever seen as every fan crashed the field the top of the 9th and took everything in sight. The fans hatred for Bob Short knew no bounds.
  11. I like the present system because it emphasizes the importance of winning the division and not making the WC equal or co-equal to a division winner; it devalues the WC but still gives WCs a chance to play in October. Seeding teams would defeat that concept. Yes, it's a shame that either Cubs or Pirates will go home but that's just the way it worked out this year. On Sirius XM MLB program, Steve Phillips said that for those who decry one of those teams going home, the answer is make sure you win the division next time As as far as the Yankees, they looked dead the last week or two and it carried over. The over under was around 83 or 84 so they defied expectations and had a better year than anticipated.
  12. Well, Dbacks aren't cooperating so looks like Astros will clinch tie for WC tonight and Angels can only hope that they and Dbacks win tomorrow or their season is over.
  13. Light that baby up! One of the great comebacks I've seen all season as the Halos come off the mat, down by 4 runs, to beat the Rangers 11-10. It at least staves off elimination until the final day of the season. Now, if only the Dbacks could do something against the Astros tonight. The crowd was stunned, to say the least.
  14. Yes, they've played very well. They should make Lovullo the manager. Otherwise, someone will nab him.
  15. Just a lot of rain here in NJ but this was around the time (early by a couple of weeks) of Sandy, which was preceded the year before by a smaller storm that resulted in no power for three days. We now have a generator that runs off natural gas so we are prepared.
  16. Sorry to hear that. Hope he gets better. I have a friend who's battling csncer for 11 years and it looks like the end is near, sadly.
  17. Harvey pitched almost 7 innings in the clincher on Saturday. I'm not sure what happened between the Yankee game and last Saturday. Perhaps he decided that he needed to regain control of his career from his agent.
  18. Embarrassing game for the Mets on Sunday, mostly due to the Harvey mess. Of course, if the bullpen does its job and the defense is not so terrible, no one might be making as much an issue as it became. Onwards and upwards with a win against the hapless Braves last night.
  19. I'm just finishing up Transit by Anna Seghers, reissued by NYRB Classics. Not sure how I feel about this book. At times I've found it tedious but it presents a good snapshot of what it was like to be -- and still may be like -- to be a refugee trying to get out and the tedium that goes with it.
  20. Sorry to hear this Dan. Our cat Scarr, who was one of the most sweetest cats we ever had, passed away earlier this year. He also had cancer and was just a shadow of what he had been. It was painful to see but we remember the fun we had with him. Brad
  21. Terrific series and agree that Moriarty is well played here.
  22. Mets played some amazing baseball in the last three days against the Nats, including winning one game they probably had no business of winning. Cespedes is playing out of his mind, basically putting the team on his back and taking them to the Division title. It's one of the greatest salary drives I've ever seen. The better he does, the more he prices the Mets out. He probably won't be here next year but we're enjoying the ride the team is on. Mets vs Dodgers should be fun.
  23. I believe the early RVGs had the slip cases, not sure about the later ones. I've kept mine.
  24. Mets problem is the bullpen, particularly the 7th inning. No one has done the job there. Blew the game on Friday in the 7th and yesterday, before taking it back in the bottom of the 7th. They acquired the former Dbacks closer, Addison Reed, yesterday. Remains to see if he can do the job. If not, they will not go far in the playoffs.
  25. Once the Giants get into the playoffs...all bets are off. They know how to win. Just sayin'. They need to get there first, which is by no means assured at this point. No doubt they are battle tested, which is why -- assuming Mets get there (who can forget 7 up with 17 to play in 2007) -- I would almost prefer the Dodgers. Either way, it doesn't matter.
