  1. Thanks. I recently picked up Rebellion but haven't started it yet. There was an article about her in the November 30 edition of the New Yorker, focusing on "Carol." Wonderful book.
  2. Some good points made by all, the best being, that it's still baseball, as Jim says. Also, as Dan says, nothing is sancrosanct. I understand why it should be changed. Logically, it doesn't make sense to have two different sets of rules.
  3. I hope the Melatonin works for you Joel. I think you have to take it right when you're ready for bed.
  4. The DH is an abomination as it wrecks the internal construct of the game. Unfortunately, that's the way the game is played everywhere except the NL so change must come.
  5. Just finished Roth's The Emperor's Tomb. A fine book (although I know it's received some criticism), some of the writing is just beautiful and some of it is very funny. Reading Roth is like a paean to an Austria that once was before WW I came.
  6. Yes, the Giant pitchers are really good. So, more or less, are the Mets pitchers. Watching Colon hit can be a hoot but he can hit and gets hits. I think he even drove in a couple of runs this year. Sad to see this part of the game going.
  7. Joel, I'm obviously no doctor but what have I read is that you want to relax the brain. Wouldn't practicing get the juices flowing? Brad
  8. I think the mistake you're making is that when you get up and practice, you're stimulating your brain, whereas it needs to be de-stimulated (assuming that's a word).
  9. More Blue? Who wouldn't want that?
  10. Haven't gotten around to it but Occupied is on my list to watch.
  11. That indeed is another way to get to sleep. Actually had a little trouble last night. Woke up 1 (went to bed at 12) and took me an hour and half to fall asleep.
  12. Several years ago, when I first contracted tinnitis (and before I learned to live with it), I couldn't sleep at all. I took some Xanax for awhile and that worked. Again, you don't want to get too dependent on it. I also tried benadryl (but not at the same time) and that helped. Also, when I've had a cough the Dr. has prescribed cough medicine, something called tussin or like that, which I think had codeine, I took a teaspoon of what was left over and that seemed to help.
  13. Thanks Larry, I was able to access the article. I don't know if Morson is overstating the problem as I suffer from the same disability as HutchFan. However, I did find persuasive the passages he cited, much preferring the non - P & V translation. What I found amazing is how professional translators could arrive at such different translations. The term "marketing of Pevear and Volokhonsky" on the last page of the article is interesting because when you go to Amazon, the first edition of War and Peace that you see is theirs. Obviously the publishers have to pay for that space. Just as in a grocery store, you have to pay for prominent shelf space.
  14. Unfortunately, that comes with a fee. Would love to read it.
  15. I've been watching War and Peace and lately I've had an interest in the Napoleonic Wars (even before the program aired in teh US) and, well, I've decided to take the plunge. Yes, you got it: War and Peace. Reading War and Peace may have been discussed before but obviosly a major undertaking. In thinking about whether to do it, I came across a couple of articles that may be of interest for those thinking about it: Seven Reasons You Should Give War and Peace a Chance Why Read War and Peace In doing a little research there is apparently some debate about which translation to choose. Many like the translation by Pevear and Volokhonsky (Vintage Classics) while others prefer the one by Anthony Briggs (Penguin). I chose the P & V one but may take a look at the Briggs one just to compare styles.
  16. I think it's inevitable that the DH will come to the NL. Although I don't like the idea, I just don't think it makes sense to have two different sets of rules. I would prefer that the AL get rid of the DH but the chances of that happening are slim and none and slim just left town.
  17. I've had it from time to time. I find that stress in your life (of whatever kind) can bring it on. I have tried Melotonin; it worked for awhile. I do not recommend Ambien; it can be habit forming and I believe there have been some adverse events associated with its use. One piece of advice, which may have been covered, is to avoid use of electronic devices after a certain hour as it stiumulates the mind and apparently there is some ingredient in there -- I read that somewhere -- that interferes with the cicadan rythym: I'm not making that up! Reading can sometimes help. Another thing that I do is switch beds. That can help also.
  18. Thanks. I know NYRB Classics has published a Bove book.
  19. Yes and no. He almost cost him a contract. If the Os had not indicated they were "pusuing" Cespedes, I'm not sure they would have gotten him back to the table. The 11 million over the original 150 was probably Boras' way of saving face.
  20. This is my first experience with him. Have ordered the continuation of the Trotta saga, The Emperor's Tomb. What would be your recommendation after that?
  21. Tomorrow we found out who made it into the Hall. Obviously Griffey will make it in. Some think that he may be close to a unanimous choice. Although he no doubt deserves election, his Mariner career was much better than his Reds career, when injuries robbed him of some of his talent. Piazza should also make it in and there's hope that Tim Raines (in his next to last year of eligibility) makes it in. After that, who knows?
  22. I'm reading the Radetzky March by Roth. It's a rather unusual book so far (about 1/3 into it) but does paint a picture of the Hapsburg Empire that is different than the way Zweig does.
  23. Rashomon is a movie and if this case does go to trial, the jury or the judge will have to determine what are the facts. If I recall my course on evidence correctly -- 35 years ago mind you! -- prior bad acts are not admissible to prove that on this occasion he acted the same way he acted on other occasions. In other words, it will be a difficult case to prosecute.
  24. He says one thing, she another. However, based on his prior history, he's not credible. Moreover, it will be up to the trier of fact -- the jury -- to determine who's telling the truth. Just because they have different stories, that doesn't mean the truth can't be determined.
  25. Here's an article from MLB about Gordon, http://m.mlb.com/news/article/160176632/making-sense-of-alex-gordons-suitors I heard an interview on MLB Radio with Mike Moustakas last week where he called Gordon the team leader and really wanted him back.
