  1. I'm with Barak on this. I really don't like thoe digipacks but what are you going to do. It seems that Verve is getting away from mini lps. Too bad. The digipacks are cheaper to sell, I assume. Better than nothing, however.
  2. I just got home a little while ago and turned on the tube for a few minutes and caught the end of what appears to be a british movie on one of the HBO channels. The quick summary said it was about a crooner who looks at the stars and all of a sudden starts singing like Billie Holliday. The last 10 minutes seemed somewhat amusing but I never heard of it. Any reviews?
  3. Congrats again. I hope you choose or are able to get to do it in elementary school. I think it's important to instill a love of music at an early age. Plus, I've heard so many stories about musicians starting young so if they have the right person like you teaching them the love of music, who knows what contributions they could make?
  4. Maybe you need to do what Deep says he does, take lots of illegal substances often (or something like that) !
  5. You have to shake your head when you see what he did at Amazon. In a way, it's sort of sad.
  6. Picked mine up today (yes, I drove up) (#573). Got to talk to Michael for a couple of minutes. There'll be some heavy duty listening going on.
  7. Looks like Worlds Records has it for $29, about $6 cheaper. True Blue is always more expensive than elsewhere.
  8. Here's the AMG Review. Sounds like an impressive set.
  9. I thought that when the BNBB went away that the oldest running battle might be a thing of the past. But lo and belhold I was wrong. Click here for the latest. Seems like Chris with a TKO in the sixth round
  10. I was thinking of driving up to Mosaic tomorrow (I live in Jersey) to pick up a copy of the Berigan and the Bennie Green MS so I called and told them that I'd like to do that and I assumed they'd have enough copies around, etc. They checked and said I should call to see if it's come in before I do that. So, I guess there's still some question about it arriving tomorrow.
  11. Since they've previously issued the Nichols and the Getz Roost, it would seem unlikely this would show up again.
  12. He's baaaaack!
  13. Getting back to the original point, even if it's a comp, I'll get this. I have a 2 cd set that Sony put out in Japan a while back so I'd probably dump that. There's also a 10 cd set that Past Perfect put out a couple of years ago. Because their discography is not the best, it's hard to tell if it's all Columbia. Even if not, you'd have to expect that the Sony sound will be better (you'd hope so anyway).
  14. Anyone heard about this. Someone posted it over at AAJ
  15. Are we talking vocals in general or the so-called "crappy" vocals? If it's the former, I took a brief look at the discography on the Mosaic site and there seem to be a looooot of vocals. Since I'm not alway that wild about vocals, I'm not sure this is something I want to plunk some serious change on.
  16. I haven't followed the SACD debates that much but what would exactly having Mosaic reissue music in that format mean. I don't have nor have any present intention to buy a SACD player so if they make it in that format and no others, will I be able to play it and assuming the answer is yes, what would it sound on a non-SACD player. Would it sound 24 bit or just how would it sound?
  17. I'm surprised Wynton M wasn't picked for this list.
  18. Kevin, Your post would seem to answer the question if they were only to be sold by Time Life and nobody else. If that's the case, they appear to be in breach. However, getting back to music here, if BN will cut a deal overseas to sell cds like Dizzy's Village Vanguard, why can't those be put out here. Why couldn't Leo Parker's cds put out here instead of having to pay $20 and up for these. Why can't they be repressed like the Japanese are doing. I fully agree with Claude on this.
  19. I'm not so sure that they could stop these from being sold so quickly. The licensee is not actively exporting them to the US. They happen to be available from a third party on a web site in the country that they are licensed for sale in. Unless the licensee knew that when he sold them to companies in Spain who intended to sell them overseas, there may not be much to be done.

    Hank Mobley

Thank you for posting this. I especially liked the Dexter quote. Like Connoisseur Series 500, I'm not a musician (although I'm studying the alto) so it's often hard to explain why you like or dislike a certain piece or artist. But Hank was the epitome of cool, of mellow, of funk. I've always loved his sound and everytime I think of his unfortunate demise, it saddens me. The "middleweight" quote is unfortunate because it's taken out of context. I never saw him as an acquired taste, just cool and really hip. Just a beautiful sound.
  21. I've done something like that before but not as extreme. But you probably had or have ADD. My son has it and we're always trying to keep him on task and not get distracted. I probably had a form of it when I was a kid but I overcame it withouth the hullaballoo that goes on today about it. Oftentimes, though, I'll be doing something at work and have to fight the urge to see what's going on here. Sometimes I give in.
  22. Unless you're actually eating some in Louisiana I hope that more and more of these type DVDs come out. I've seen the Monk and saw in a Borders awhile ago one of Dizzy at Montreux. I wonder if there are ones of Bird out there or maybe Dex in concert in Denmark. There may be; I haven't checked but I'd buy 'em.
  23. Scott, Anything that Blue recorded for Riverside is top notch. Blue Six fits right in with this. Since we've detoured into Blue for a second, I'd like to plug one of my favorite cds: Junior's Cookin' on Jazzland, with Blue. It's really a co-led session and it's really top quality hardbop. If you love Blue or Junior, this is a must. Junior didn't have that many led sessions but they're all really good. I also recommend the last one he did for Steeplechase, You Leave Me Breathless. Although he would die soon afterwards, you can't tell it from this session. Another recommended disc Any Junior fans out there?
  24. Try Curtis Fuller Jazztet with Benny Golson. A real gem. I'd also recommend Mosaic and Ugetsu from Art Blakey. They're outstanding albums.
  25. David, Whatever you're on, can you send me some?
