  1. from bighassle.com: For more than five decades, saxophonist/composer Ornette Coleman has played a pivotally seminal role in American music. The inventor of what has been called "free jazz," Coleman belongs to that rare breed of artists/thinkers whose influence extends far beyond the realm of their chosen medium. Always putting his remarkable virtuosity at the service of melody and emotion, he has had and continues to have a powerful impact on how musicians play, improvise, and compose, on how music lovers listen, on the color and sound of music the world over. While Coleman has led a wide variety of formations, from duos to symphony orchestras, electric and acoustic, his basic musical concept has been remarkably consistent. He is interested in writing and performing music that allows all players to give free reign to their imagination and ideas. His musical system, which he named “harmolodics” and now prefers to call “sound grammar,” is a remarkable exercise in applied democracy. All voices are given equal weight; all musicians are free to make deeply individual contributions while listening closely to one another, at once giving & taking space for their respective creativity. The release of Sound Grammar marks several firsts: the first release on Coleman's own, new label, also called Sound Grammar, the album is his first in more than a decade; his first live album in 20 years; and the first recording featuring his latest, now three-year-old, band. Composed of Ornette Coleman on saxophone, trumpet & violin, his son Denardo Coleman on drums, and acoustic bassists Tony Falanga (Orchestra of St. Luke's) & Greg Cohen (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, John Zorn's Masada), this group sounds like no other on the music scene or in Ornette's career. Beautifully recorded live in concert in Germany in late 2005, Sound Grammar showcases six brand new Coleman compositions and two remakes: "Song X,” originally featured on the 1985 album of the same name, and "Turnaround," from the classic 1959 LP Tomorrow is The Question . He explains: “When I get a job to perform I write a whole new program of music so that we don't perform something I have played before and that my musicians have not. I want them to be affected the same way I'm being affected. I only do that for the sake of equality, not because I want to be a great composer.” Ornette explains further: "Sound grammar is to music what letters are to language. Music is a language of sounds that transforms all human languages." As original, innovative, and groundbreaking as anything Coleman has released in nearly five decades of record making, Sound Grammar is also one of his most accessible and melodic works to date. It is poised to rank among the key musical events of 2006.
  2. as long as i don't flinch. 'cause they punch hard!
  3. howdy all, i hope someone here can relieve my confusion or join in my frustration about a pricing issue involving half.com. when you pull up an artist's titles, they list the individual cds like this: Back Room Blues: Brian Lynch CD - Buy it for $3.30 (Save 82%) but when you click on the actual title or the lowest available price of $3.30, you get this: Back Room Blues (CD) Primary Artist: Brian Lynch Best Price: $13.20 List Price: $18.98 (Save 30%) this significant disparity between the supposed and actual lowest price occurs quite often. so what gives? is it just a case of my missing out on a lower priced item before they have a chance to update the listing? it's somewhat frustrating when you think you can get a cd for a very low price, only to click and be disappointed.
  4. pm'd you about the snidero and henderson discs. and the wuepper too.
  5. i, on the other hand, will take periodic naps to bolster my constitution, much to the chagrin of my chaperone above.
  6. i'm sorry you felt the need to pour scalding water on the squirrel. there are products available that will deter squirrels without harming them. many contain red pepper, which they can't stand. if the problem resurfaces, i recommend buying something like scoot squirrel, a spray that's easy to use and quite effective.
  7. ten days to go! i hope jim, joe, and randy have time to hang out with us common folk after their set.
  8. i think i know why...
  9. that's true, of course. i was just pointing out the fact that no one on this board (where he's posting) is likely to buy them.
  10. you'll probably have better luck selling sealed copies of the wallington and perkins discs for $6 somewhere else, since a lot us already bought them for $3 directly from concord.
  11. Myth: Dogs Have Cleaner Mouths Than Humans Pooches Mouths Are Dirty, but They're Safe to Kiss Oct. 14, 2005 — - Pet lovers can't get enough affection from their pooches. And if licking is loving, they get a lot of loving. But is it really safe to kiss a dog, considering where they often put their mouths? "Their saliva is much cleaner and if you have a cut or anything, if they lick it -- it's healing," one woman told "20/20" while being interviewed in New York City. Proof From a Veterinarian To find out just who has a cleaner mouth, we asked veterinarian and fellow dog lover Marty Becker, author of "Chicken Soup for the Dog Owner's Soul," to offer his opinion. "They raid the garbage can. You know, we give each other a peck on the cheek when we say hello, they give each other a peck on the rear end," said Becker. "All you got to do is look, watch, smell and you'll realize that that is not true." He thinks the myth that a dog's mouth is clean stems from their practice of licking their wounds. "And they'll be licking that wound and you'll notice that the wound heals very fast … what that tongue does is it gets rid of the dead tissue," said Becker. He compares that tongue lashing to the work of a surgeon who cleans out a wound, and said the licking also stimulates circulation. Go Ahead, Give Them a Kiss If you want to give your pooch a kiss, it may be safer than kissing another human. Becker says many of the bacteria in the mouth of a dog are species specific, so it won't harm its owner. "So a staph or a strep for a human is not transmissible to a dog, if you were to kiss it, and vice versa," said Becker. Bottom line -- you're more likely to get a serious illness from kissing a person than kissing a dog. But since dogs do transmit some germs, Becker has some advice: "Keep the vaccines current. Good external parasite control, good internal parasite control. You're going to be good to go." And then, he says you can kiss them all you want. "They love us unconditionally, they make us laugh," said Becker. "If we're going to give them a little kiss to thank them for that, then that's good by me." 19. i didn't see any mention of this new release. just listened to some clips and it sounds interesting. from the blue note website: "Streams of Expression reunites Lovano with the great composer, conductor, and musicologist Gunther Schuller (their first collaboration was Rush Hour, Blue Note, 1995), and draws upon everything from the cool school to late-era Coltrane, offering a holistic take on jazz, present and future. The album is comprised of two extended, multipart pieces (Streams of Expression Suite, Birth of the Cool Suite) and three stand-alone tunes (“Blue Sketches,” “Buckeyes,” “Big Ben”) and features an augmented incarnation of Lovano’s nonet from the albums 52nd Street Themes (2000) and On this Day . . . At the Vanguard (2003). Three of the tracks showcase Lovano in a trio setting, recalling his Trio Fascination series, regarded as a contemporary classic." anyone picked it up yet?
