This might still be on Netflix. It really weakens as the years pass and the immediacy/proximity of the reporters diminishes, but the earlier footage is useful.

I like it too, it and its partner. Like 'em a lot, actually. Mehldau often sounds like he's squirming on the piano bench because he jas to go pee, but so does Joanne Brackeen, and that's somebody else I don't let ruin my day!

Confirmation on Teddy Wilson and Mosaic update

Don't want a bomb shelter, not in any hurry to survive that! -
All the more reason to buddy up with old people who bought the LPs before they either go broke or die.

I've seen the B&W videos of these fine shows for decades now, but it looks like it was broadcast in color, maybe? Harry James is the only color one I've seen, but is it possible that Duke/Basie/Hampton/etc still exist somewhere, in color? And finally, can we get an authoritative account of just what this show was, and why the commercial reissues have been so spotty? What I have of these I have on old VHS bought out of the Blockbuster cutout bin way back in the day. This stuff is priceless, imo. These things: I guess Charly has had their hands on the too,,,who knew, and again, just VHS?

Confirmation on Teddy Wilson and Mosaic update

Yeah, the retirement was a known quantity, and I spent all I could leading up to it, "acorns for the winter", so to speak, including Mosiacs I knew I would want to have. This one is not "urgent" for me, really, not now. Saving that money for anything that will be. -

1968, produced by Cal Lampley, music is predictably "good" (and enjoyable as such), mostly standards, but talk about, an....unexpected lineup. Person still feeling his way around playing changes rather than riffs/licks, Abercrombie fully confident with vocabulary but still looking for a dialect, and Grady Tate his usual badass impeccable self. Sorry, full length cut here:

Odean don't need the help, but if it brings new listeners in, hey. Tell you what, though, James Carter on "Muntu Chant" is some of that get up and holler type of jazz. Of course, this version is too! but James Carter actin' a fool!

Point being - Sonny has taken care of his money over the years in order to be in a position to do this. One more way that Sonny Rollins has won at life.

Ask when he knew he was going to be tall.

say whaaaaat? Those are two totally different records, that one and Iaepetus. how the hell did THAT happen?
-
whoa, seriously? Details please. I grabbed hat one right away because it was so, uh, sketchy looking. So now I gotta ask - how are there "contractual issues" with something as totally "unknown" as this. Publishing?

Hmmm....does going from "need to check her out one day" to "ok, let's do this more or less all at once" to "ok, that's enough of that" count as overlooked? If so, then yes.

Confirmation on Teddy Wilson and Mosaic update

Formats aside, informed opinions welcome - how "essential" is this set going to be for somebody who already has a good grasp of Wilson? If it was your money and you at best maybe had it to spend on this one, would you cut a corner someplace else to get it? Serious question, serious situation. -
Confirmation on Teddy Wilson and Mosaic update

Advocate arise, convincers, convince, now is the time. My wife just retired and our monthly income has been reduced by at least 25&. I've looked the discography over pretty good, so here's my points to please rebut with something other than aw gee, Mosaic, GOTTA get it: I am more than slightly familiar with Teddy Wilson. He was quite literally one of the first jazz musicians I ever heard, long before I had any idea what jazz was, and then once I did, he was on the radar, always. Looking at the discography, most/much of this stuff seems be solo material, some of which I already know, so there's nothing here of a "type" that I don't know anything about. The ensemble dates, like wise, I know some, but not all. Other than Hodges and Ben, nobody jumps out at me as somebody who I don't have a reflex reacxction to, and even then, I know Rabbit & Ben really, really well. My point is, if our monthly income was at per-retirement level, I'd have per-ordered, Now, though, I'm not sure if I'll order at all. Anybody who can point to specific inclusions that are genuinely "must-hear" that will only be found in this set, speak up, I'm willing to be convinced. But it's going to need to be a level-headed, sober convincing. I have always loved Teddy Wilson, especially of this vintage. But that's why I already have a "good selection". How much better does it need to be? -
I didn't listen to enough to guess. It was a "30 second sample" run-through,, mostly. Tight on time.

So look - 90 days that changed the music forever. You can't even get a 90 day warranty for some shit these days. Midge!
