Ted Hearne - Furtive Movements (Ashley Bathgate / Ron Wiltrout)
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
Somebody else has mentioned Neos to me. Where there's smoke... I dig how this piece overtly engages elements of the Max Roach solo drum techniques and timbres as known quantities/pre-existing conditions/etc, grist for the compositional mill...nice to know that people were paying attention, assuming that they were. -
YES!!!

So, nobody's really done this yet, right? Other than to fuck with a dog and to pass a fem minutes on Saturday, right? I think somebody surely has, it can' be that common and unco9mmon at the same time.
-
Sounds to me like the man spent all his money as quick as Dick Clark paid him whatever little bit he was giving him.
-
I'm sure somebody could.

So...I'm sitting around just now doing nothing except practicing my whistling (which isn't very good) and my humming (which is also not very good) and for whatever reason, attention drift, probably, I started doing both at the same time. It sounded like a whistler using a Varitone (or maybe a hummer using a Multivider), and I was like, whoa, this sounds familiar, but from where? Surely this is either a commercial gimmick and/or a folk tradition somewhere? But who/where? As always, thanks in advance!

and for me, that was because it had Sonny Rollins on it.

Yeah, Jack Jones is stealth. So much justified confidence in both pitch and time, I always think he's going to be wrong or worse, careless, but nope, never. And I like how he never gets held prisoner by any arrangement, cool or corn, he just nails whatever it is and sits there looking like Jack Jones, like hey, what am I supposed to do, suck?

"Elvin Jones" trumps "Young", can anybody provide something where Elvin did not have that pocket? Mayne the Raymond Scott Secret 7 record, and even there, give him even half a chance and out he comes! The man was just there, it seems like, there. I guess the conventional wisdom is that he got his basic thing together in the Army, and then it was just a matter of development, but as far as I know, you can play anything that has Elvin on it and sooner or later, it's gonna feel like Elvin, most likely sooner than later.

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yep. Arista did an exemplary job with the Savoy catalog, as did whoever took it immediately afterwards. That Don Byas set is one of many I'd not be without.- 153 replies

He'll get whatever Dusty Groove gives him, but no more for me. I thought it was gonna be some Ingo shit or something like that, old-school boots from the pre-internet days. Those could be fun. This is not fun, because this is not the pre-internet days.

wow, so these are MODERN Italian bootleg LPs. I was hoping for something more vintage in that regard.

Hell, the reason that Sheldon's voice works so well in any context is that it's based on not being a "correct" jazz voice. It's a correct Jack Sheldon voice, at home anywhere he finds a way to get invited in. The dude showed up on the Jack Webb shows of the 60s & 70s, and same thing there, he got invited in, he made his voice fit in and then stand out. The standing out part is easy, the getting invited in part, not so much. And his stand-up album mentioned way up-thread really is a treat.

Probably a POS bootleg of a Fuel gig, but I put it in my cart because, hey, red meat. We'll see tomorrow if I was the first to do so, I doubt it.

Pretty regular leader dates form 1957-1962, and then nothing until 1972-1973, and then nothing again until 1978, and no real return to anything resembling "regular output" until 2004. I've heard random accounts of various health issues, plus I believe he found job security with Basie for a while (as did Fred Wesley!). This life has its vagaries. Go figure.

I don't know if this is new inventory for them or not, but over the years they've had a lot of those. Great deals, especially if you don't want/need to get the Mosaic right away. Pressings are generally clean-ish, perfectly fine if like me you're not all that finicky about that type of thing relative to cost.

Savoy set coming from Mosaic
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This Mosaic set only covers "bebop". Lots of things not gonna be there, lots of things...including some almost(?) bebop... Hopefully we'll all live long enough for THE Mosaic Don Byas set that will prove there is True Justice In The End. Unless and until then, hey, do whatcha gotta do, and don't be surprised when others do the same thing. Doesn't have to happen, but it will. Definitely NOT "bebop", but Don Byas still a BAAAAAAD Motherfucker, take heed world, and forget at your peril, not mine. I'm calling on President-Elect Donald J. Trump to keep my Don Byas in America. Please join me.- 153 replies

Try the two Mainstream albums from 1972 & 1973. Neither are perfect, and fuller is not always the strongest player on either date, but both are interesting records overall. And on Smokin' you get some really good early 70s Jimmy Heath, of which there has yet to be "enough". If you like Blakey's Prestige records of the same time, these are in a similar vein, although not as well produced or as consistently well-played, Bob Shad was really getting lax as far as that thing went.

WS home field advantage now to be determined by team with best regular season record: http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2016/12/01/the-all-star-game-will-no-longer-determine-home-field-advantage-in-the-world-series/?cid=eref:nbcnews:text "Best regular season record" more or less meaningless in this context, imo. Still, better than All Star game as far as optics go.
