  2. The Dixie Hummingbirds covering "Jesus Children Of America". All Stevie Wonder covers should cut to the chase like this one does.

  5. Snow Dog is a Japanese label that claims that the tracks are licensed: http://snwdg.com/?page_id=2 They've also issued more than just the Bishop album: http://www.forcedexposure.com/labels/snow.dog.projects.japan.html and/or http://www.dustygroove.com/browse.php?kwfilter=Black+Jazz%2FSnow+Dog+%28Japan%29&x=5&y=7&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1
  6. Same alternate takes on both EPs? If one finds one EP, one has the same music as is on the other?
  7. A few things are bugging me that I can't identify, such as... Track One - sounds like a recording at Rudy's parents house, tenor is like a smoothed out early-50s Rollins, Jimmy Heath? I was thinking maybe an early Clifford Brown on trumpet, but no, right? Track Six - Is this Wynton? And/or from a soundtack? The more I listen, the more both seem likely? Track Seven - Not Brew Moore? Is the tenor player American? Track Twelve - Oh my! http://www.allmusic.com/album/six-pack-mw0000088778 Track Sixteen Lenny Breau died before recordings sounded like this. I really like this, it is just one guitarist, right? Or not> I hear the occasional picking thing that kind of hints at some country roots, but it's the really percussive attack and slightly "off" pitch on some notes that had me thinking maybe a later, less "star in the making" Stanley Jordan. I've not a clue, unfortunately, but I really do like it. And the tune is familiar, it seems...GRRRRR!!!!!!
  8. If you read the fine print of the mainstream reports, besides the union, there's also the matter of antiquated, inefficient manufacturing facilities and processes. Not that that affects the bottom line or anything. But of course, it's not management's fault that that's there, is it...It's never management's fault when shit like that gets old and no longer works the way it needs to in order to remain competititve. It's always people who work for a living who ruin everything. Always. Damn you, people who work for a living!
  9. "crude"...what is the frame of reference? That's what determines any relativistic judgement, no? I mean, some people still think that a drum set is crude and that a beat itself is vulgar. Don't think that's what we're looking at here, but if "African" = "primitive" or some such is in the mix (and again, not saying it is, but I don't know one way or the other), then I'd still not know what "vulgar" would/might mean in this context except in a sense that I cannot really comprehend beyond it being just another word.

  11. That will not be a problem!
  12. Our roster so far: jeffcrom The Magnificent Goldberg Hot Ptah (hard copy) Bright Moments mikeweil Big Al Jim R relyles Hardbopjazz Still plenty time to sign up, and again - this one is not going to be about "challenges". It's just a short (58 minutes) collection of accessible-but-quality tracks compiled with an eye towards generating smiles and/or grins. So don't worry about not having time to respond "in depth" or anything. Whatever "depth" there is will be pretty-much obvious, as will several of the artists (and I'll tell you right now, there will be a few that will be all but impossible to miss, seriously impossible to miss). In the meantime, there's a few cuts on Hot Ptah's 104 that are driving me nuts from not being able to identify them. HELP!
  13. That was a very interesting band...they made a fair number of recordings, probably more in their "reunion" phase than they did back in the early 1960's, but some of it is getting hard to find. So if you find something that looks good to you, don't hesitate, if you know what I mean. You might come back and it's not there anymore. Been there, done that, trust me. Another yes to People In Sorrow, btw. If you don't live in the US, you can find clips on YouTube. Otherwise...just trust us!
  14. That was back when $500.00 was a whole lot of money for a whole lot of people!
  15. Your observation strikes me as very subjective. I was going to say something about thinking immediately after being struck might not be the best time to think clearly, but I'm still trying to figure out what constitutes a vulgar Latin rhythm section... As for the Giuffre/Bley/Swallow trio, yes to the first go-round, and yes to the later conjoinment:
  16. I don't know what that means either.
  17. I don't know what this means.
  18. The company and the union have agreed to mediation.
  19. That one tends to get overlooked, I think...it sounds like a lot of chops-flashing, and it is, but there's idea-flashing in at least equal measure...sometimes it strikes me as the WR eqiuivalent of Bird & Dizzy's 1947 Carnegie Hall version of "Dizzy Atmosphere", it's virtuoso playing and thinking...and the way that Zawinul captures the Ellington brass's thing on "Rockin' In Rhythm", that thing that they got into behind Paul on DACIB about midway through the 60s, the way Zawinul captures that and feeds it back in his own voice, man, that's just pure LOL joy! I probably like the whole of Weather Report only slightly less now than I did then, but the stuff I still really like, I REALLY like. They were right!
  20. With the possiblity of being a pedophile running a distant second?
  21. whoa...
  22. And these are actual alternate takes of the Perkins/Lewis/Etc, not edited versions of the album cuts?
