We worship Trane, love Elvin, and venerate McCoy, but next time you go there, let the bass direct everything else and see where you end up. It's a veritably...regal place. A palatial expanse of freeness (let's not call it "freedom", because that word is just too damn cheap these days) built from the bottom up. Sometimes I take it for granted, but these days, taking anything for granted is an invitation to extermination. Let's not do that.

Never seen or heard of any of 'em on CD. I guess I'll spring for 'Spider man'. Thanks Jim. MG I guess that was the only one, but this is the second time it's been out on Japanese CD. I've got "CDs" of some of the others, but...

The problems with Bird's "Lover Man" would likely not be noticed if the story wasn't already known. Not so much the rest of that session, but that one tune is quite cohesive, and that seems to be the one that everybody obsesses on (even Bird, who I guess felt the need for a do-over). And Ernie Henry was slinky in the extreme, not sloppy or whatever, which not everybody gets. But everybody don't get something. I'm pretty sure that at least a few Freddy McCoy Prestige sides have been out in Japan. And at least one of them is coming back! http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=2mh4dkpg2y&ref=browse.php&refQ=kwfilter%3DFreddie%2BMcCoy%26amp%3Bx%3D14%26amp%3By%3D5%26amp%3Bincl_oos%3D1%26amp%3Bincl_cs%3D1

I have been enjoying this very much. -
But - if you're waiting for some bad Lester Young....there won't be any.

Jackie McLean, but only if you want to count a co-led date with McCoy Tyner and then the Something Else dates issued in America. So that get an asterisk. For that matter...McCoy Tyner, maybe more three, possibly more times. Don't know how you want to count that. Lou Donaldson, Curtis Fuller, and....does Donald Byrd still even play? Sonny Rollins!

If I illegally download Louis Armstrong group recordings from the 1920s* do I then have "hot" Hot Fives and Sevens? * copyright expiration questions aside ** "hot" colloquial English for "stolen" And if you were to dispose of the evidence, where would they find it? (other than on your FAT (still used?) if you hadn't reformatted your HD or anything)

Kitchen tips 101. Make sure to chew the apple!

Because a seed might take root in your intestinal lining and then you would get an apple tree growing out of your butt. DUH!!! -
I always wanted to hear Jackie McLean record some of those Mr. Rogers songs, especially that one. Seriously.

Just seems that when it gets defined, it's usually backwards, and that when it defines itself, it's usually forwards. Usually. But then again, that's all dependent on linear time in which I am not exactly a fervent believer.

A tradition that gets defined backwards is not going to be the same tradition as one that defines itself forward.

Looking For Sugimoto Taku Myshkin Musicu
JSngry replied to 926am's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I've probably heard some of this music and not realized that it was "called" that. No formal precepts, then, just an overall aesthetic? Makes perfect sense, actually, just never would have thought of music in terms of "lower case" myself. Always something new to learn! -
Bingo! Virtue, true virtue, is inconvenient. But it does exist, and all the rationalizing and qualifying that can be mustered only obscures that fact. It doesn't alter it. I mean, we're all whores in some form or fashion, pretty much all of us. If you do something you really don't believe in for a paycheck, you're a whore, simple as that. C'est la vie But I don't think that any of us would glamorize our whoredom, especially to the point of recruiting others into it. But there are those who do (and they're everydamnwhere), and the more "attractive" they're positioned, the greater the allure of doing any damn thing for money and fame gets, and sooner or later the notion of "virtue" ends up getting mocked, discarded altogether, or even worst, redefined in such a way as to serve the procurers. This isn't about sex, not really, it's about what of yourself you insist on keeping, what part you share, what part you let go, and the terms and conditions of how it all works. It applies to the physical and the mental and the spiritual (however you define that). And the more you can convince people that what is intrinsically theirs is really "no big deal", just a tool, a means to a bigger end, the easier it can be taken from them and put to whatever use the taker has in mind (which usually involves some form of exploitation, guaranteed). We do not live in an age where building people up & encouraging them to stay strong and rise above is a particularly desired outcome. It's a COME ON DOWN!!!! world today, and the further down you come, the happier everybody is. World gone wrong.
