  1. Whole 'nother world, that's what it is.
  2. What about this guy?
  3. And as for you, Mrs. Matty O'Neil, we'll thank you much to keep that bubbley blox of a bably bloy under some semblance of control when the red light is on,. thank you very much, mum.

  5. I remember when "slow tv" meant one that too a while to warm up...
  6. Looking high and low for an album cover with a rally cap on it, but can't find one, dammit...
  7. Yeah, I left the Rangers during the Tom Hicks years, because it was obvious that the ownership was not interested in fielding a quality team, or even trying to develop one. The only regret I have about that is the beginning of the Ron Washington/John Daniels years that are now bearing fruit (I would give anything to be able to go back in time and see Ian Kinsler as a rookie, or experience Josh Hamilton coming back from total degeneration, or Mark Texeria being traded for a big bundle of "WHO????"), but...I am not so big a sports junkie that I will be played for a total chump by a totally cynical organization. "If you build it, they will come" is not the same as "if you leave a shovel lying around, they will buy it and build it for you", ya' know? This loyalty thing, it works both ways.
  8. Race and/or "race" only matters and/or "matters" when it doesn't matter.
  9. Good playing is the first sound I listen for. If it's there, we can negotiate the rest.
  10. I like giving, and I like getting (within basic familial & friendly parameters). Shopping is not fun, though, and battling people for whom it is a lifestyle definitely is not. So...gotta love the internet!
  11. Bobby V in Texas was a bit of a trip, at some point he would throw a player or a coach under the bus if the heat got too high (and where "too high" was didn't seem to be all that high sometimes, to be honest...), but otoh, he got the Rangers on the road to at least thinking in terms of being a serious team. Good baseball head, not necessarily a real go-to-the-mat kind of guy If I was a team that wanted to start getting somewhere, I think I'd be happy having him there, at least for a while. If I was an established player like the Red Sox...probably not nearly so much. That team looks from the outside like they need a kick-your-ass-in-private, boring/superficial-as-hell-on-the-outside type of guy. And Valentine being Valentine, the odds of him going to a "fixer upper" type of team doesn't seem too high to me.
  12. Dave, this is the some of the darkest shit I've heard in years, this whole Penn State thing. A little levity seemed...needed at this point...wasn't aiming at you, promise, just looking for a break from all the ugliness.
  13. Mirrors run amok!
  14. It's deadly funny and deadly serious at the same time...probably in such a way that they become the same thing, "funny" and "serious"...now that Lester & Malachi are no longer around to forcibly reinforce that point "in the marketplace", it becomes more than ever a personal responsibility on the part of the individual "listener" to remember that, and...sometimes shit gets too funky and the responsibility is not met. It's a world gone wrong, but don't blame Roscoe Mitchell and/or the AACM. They might have been the last time the world went right, at least so right.
  15. Well golly gee, it's right there!
  16. Just now got around to looking at the booklet, and the picture of Roscoe wearing an Avis button cracked me up!
  17. Had to fully decompress from baseball season before tackling any seriously serious new music. Started with Before There Was Sound this morning & am now going to have to find a way to get away from it before moving on to anything else. I will never be able to experience this music in the context of its time and place, but its so damn compelling, so damn strong now, 46 years later, that it still slaps one in the face with a refreshingly bracing WAKE UP that might mean something different now than it did then, but then again, WAKE UP is ultimately WAKE UP no matter where and when, right? What's really fascinating to me is to hear how "traditional" the material & performances sounds. It still seems to be overtly/conscientiously at root "straight ahead" (albeit in an "advanced" way, the impact of Ornette - what we would now think of as "early Ornette", but which in 1965 was just Ornette, period - is definitely heard and felt) in a way that was just one piece of the overall picture by the time the rest of the world got to know the AACM, the AEC in particular . Here, it is the picture - everybody swinging their asses off, playing with supreme confidence and clarity using conventional timbres & textures & pulses almost exclusively. This is not a surprise in and of itself, anything but, but to be able to hear this much "detail" of this one facet of Roscoe's "thing" is...really cool! Can't say it any better than that - really cool! At some point I'll get to the Braxton/McDonough & the Eddie Johnson that also arrived yesterday, but...Roscoe is going to be playing for a while longer. Love it when that happens!
  18. MLB Will Add Two Wild Card Teams http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/mlb-will-add-two-wild-card-teams.html Wow... Seems pretty unnecessary and gimmicky to me, and giving one more non-divisional winner the chance to go all the way just heightens the "meaningfulness" divide between regular season and post-season.
  19. Do Your Ears Hang Low (trad.) A Sound For Sore Ears (Jimmy Heath) Open Ears (Johnny Hodges) Open Your Ears, O Faithful People (hymn) Kissin' Ears (Gym Class Heroes) Next up = BUTTON(S)
  20. One good tube deserves another!
  21. Latex-y rubbery lookishness!
  22. For pure primal satisfaction, no, not even close. But the legal ramifications are infinitely preferable. Damn laws get in the way of everything...
  23. I wouldn't be surprised either, but that is a most ignoble goal, imo.
