  1. I like that in theory, but I've seen some, enough, really, truly horrible, at times incompetent, calls made this year that I am now in favor of some kind of limited - and it would have to be very limited in order for it to work - in-game review process. Part of being an honest man trying to do a good job (and there's a few umps about whom I would not say that without some not-insignificant pause...) is being able to admit that perhaps you made a mistake & you'd like to review the evidence in the service of getting the call right. Truthfully, if we want to talk about "integrity of the game" or some such, I think the DH is a bigger game-changer than video review ever could be.
  2. No disrespect meant or anything, but that's really funny in a dark kinda way... Anyway, RIP, Mr. Foster. You were a consummate musician, a consummate professional, and your spirit of adventure & enthusiasm will continue to inspire. If I ever have the time, I need to scan & post an article Mr. Foster wrote for a local NYC jazz newspaper back around 1979 or so. In it, he talked about how all his years touring with Basie pretty much isolated him from what was going on in the rest of the jazz world, and what a shock it was to him when he left the road and got a whiff of everything else that was going on. To see how he responded, staying true to his core identity, but making a willful and purposeful decision to "add new elements" that he found valid and which made sense for him, hey, I respect the hell outta that.
  3. But not as old as 'I Got Rhythm!
  4. I think it's like ADD, a convenient syndrome du jour. But you gotta be careful to not throw out legit cases along with the non-so legit. It's a real condition, sure enough. But it's not the same as a kid going off the deep end due to environmental influences. I'm just sayin'...
  5. Could the same not be true of a clinical bi-polar condition? Put them together, bi-polar and addiciton, and whaddya' get? Bippity-Boppity-Boo. I still say it's body chemistry. All of it. We just haven't gotten to the specifics yet, but we will.
  6. Would #4 be from a Clark Terry big band, the one with Phil & Chris Woods on alto?
  7. Doesn't look like they do, which is a drag. I bought "in quantity" a few years ago and am needing to reorder. But I guess not from them...
  8. Daisy Mae Scragg Ellie Mae Clampett Mary Jane "Mae" West
  9. Mike, have you tried Bags Unlimited? http://www.bagsunlimited.com It's an America dealer (and a good one), but their shipping might be more reasonable than in Cadence's.
  10. Manic depressive is the story angle now. I never heard it before this weekend. Nor had I (nor have I been reading any follow-ups to know if that angle was "gaining traction"), but really, doesn't it make sense? Not in terms of the addiction per se, but in terms of the excessive...."exhibitionism" she always seemed to display?
  11. That was the only thing I really had to say, but apparently how I said it raised somebody's ire, about which I really do not care, but I will not be "scolded" by anybody who does not have the established personal and/or professional and/or administrative standing in my eyes to do so. Ever. It could indeed have gone on forever, and would have, so thanks for locking the thread. I do not offer deference casually. Respect? Absolutely, unless "red flags" arise. But deference? No. Then there was the idiot who was certain that I had planned it all along, that it was my goal to shit on the thread from jump, and that maybe if somebody would shit on a Monday Michiru thread I would know how it feels (btw - it did happen once, and oh well about that). Well, yeah, ok. How do you deal with that level of paranoia and irrationality? It reminded me of the red-faced bug-eyed Jesus Freak who got up in my face when I was marching at a counter-protest at the Dallas opening of The Last Temptation Of Christ and sreaned IF THIS MOVIE WAS ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING YOU'D BE ON OUR SIDE!!!!!!! So hey, to all the people who got pissed off - Unless and until the word "motherfucker" is permanently and officially banned from all board usage, it will continue to make appearances in my posts, as is my right to post in my personal conversational idioms (like some here, I live in several "worlds", and have skills for each. It is not the place of other posters to choose which world I "should" be in when musing about the topics at hand), but not with the intent of provoking confrontation. I realize that not everybody appreciates "street language" (much less "musician language"), but sorry, it's just an idiom, and unless you have actually fucked your mother and now feel deep unresolved remorse over having done so (in which case, professional help is both available and advised), your "offense" is not something about which I am going to go to great lengths to be sensitive to when conversing. However, should confrontation be aggressively pursued, the pursuer will not be disappointed. Also, I want it on the record now that I have never posted on a serious thread with the intention of "shitting on it", nor will I ever. And anybody who thinks otherwise can go fuck themself, or at least try to. So, yes - I am an asshole. I am quite often arrogantly passionate about the certainty of my beliefs, and definitely am so about my right to express them in an open forum. And no, I really don't care about inadvertently offending your sensibilities, especially if you're somebody who I don't know as anything other than a cyber-entity who shows up just to bitch and moan. Not a day goes by that at least 100 things occur that deeply offend my sensibilities, so I figure that's just the way life works. You ain't gonna get what you like every time you wake up. Tell me something I don't know. I am also any number of other things, as are we all, A surprising number of them are actually quite pleasant. Life - and the beat - goes on. And I still do not like the way Oscar Peterson plays.
  12. The difference being that we have no recordings of Twain's voice (do we?), and even if we did..his true voice was in his prose, so we really do have a record. Having said that, if I can accept the premise that jazz is more and more becoming a repertory music in terms of "style" even more than in the types of material performed (and as I do come to accept that, the less and less I hold an interest in it), then it's all good. Mr. Herring has certainly toiled hard to learn his craft and has the results to show for it. What he doesn't have is a truly distinctive voice. But if that's not the point, then there's no complaint to be made.
  13. Some are sicker than others. Drug addiction doesn't make people with mental health issues healthier. No, but mental health issues do explain the impulse toward wanton self-destructive/suicidal behavior. A bi-polar addict who refuses to take medication specifically targeted at treating that condition is essentially disallowing for the possibility of behaving rationally about anything, not just their addiction. Which is not to say that if she took the medication that she would automatically choose to attempt sobriety, much less succeed, just that without it, she was going to go off the rails anyway, which she certainly did.
  14. Queen Prince Sir
  15. Live, yes. I don't think an electric piano was on an actual gig until Chick was in the band (the duffy's gig?).
  16. Guess I've just had bad luck. The Enja CD remains handy!
  17. True, not today, but those who remember the beneficent power and glory that was Slippy Slabberwocky (and all that surrounded him) remember that there once was, and lo, it was good. Damn good.
  18. How's your pressing? Every one I've come across has been noisier than hell...
  19. Yeah, there's no there there yet.
  20. Read somewhere this morning that a friend/colleague/whatever said that she was bi-polar but refused to take appropriate medication. That would explain a lot. When all is said and done, I think everything pretty much everything we do comes down to brain chemistry. Just a hunch.
  21. Landlordism stifled. Congratulations!
