  1. A lost Meet The Doctors Of Death opportunity to not have had it produced by George Butler....
  2. Two monster shots from Hamilton & Cruz, a couple of sparkling defensive gems from Elvis, Yorvit Torealba swings the bat well, but the real story for this lifelong pitching-deprived fan was Derek Holland - complete came shutout, 112 pitches (77/35) and, finally, the ability to pitch out a bit of trouble, not once, but twice (including a bases loaded 2-out fix caused by Beltre flubbing out 3. Beltre, good teammate that he is, apologized by making the play on the next hitter, and then leading off the next inning with a walk, being on board for Cruz' blast). If this is a hurdle finally cleared, it is a major one for Holland, who has been plagued by letting one inning get away from him in otherwise well-pitched games. And even if it is a hurdle to be revisited along the way to finally clearing it, just seeing that it can be done is a pretty damn cool to see out of this very conscientious young talent. Added bonus was Holland doing this in front of a semi-hometown crowd (he's from Newark, OH, which I guess is sorta close to Cleveland?) and seeing his mom beaming with pride throughout the game. Mrs. Holland, btw, is a more-than-a-bit of a babe in that middle-aged happy mom type way that I grow more fond of with every passing year, now that I know what it really means to be there when you get there. Kudos to Mr. & Mrs. Holland for all of that! If the Rangers' staff continues to build on this recent momentum, you can call me Pongo Jim for the rest of the season. To be able to see a season of consistently good starting pitching out of a staff that at the beginning of the season had more question marks than the Kardashian sisters at a spelling bee, hell, you can call me Pongo Pantymaria for all I care! WTF sidenote - Matt Harrison, who missed his last start due to a blister, may or may not be ready for his next one due to a kidney stone. Geez dude, did you drink the pickle juice, or what?
  3. Wonder if he had life insurance?

  6. Really? I ws not aware of that. I would pay that price for that music, although not too much more, if any more.

  8. For a team that is supposedly anemic offensively, the A's have been putting a lot of runs on the board recently. Seattle too, for that matter.

  11. That Walter Johnson footage is awesome. The aforementioned whip action is obvious, and the probably fact that he's being filmed warming up rather than in a full-on game situation just makes it all the more impressive.
  12. Just listened to the alleged sample of "Mother Wit"(it's actually "Impact"), and it's still got that funky, tinny, uber-compressed sound. It's even worse on the sample than on the LP! Don't know that there's be any fix for that. Never the nonetheless, that sample retains the urgency and intensity of the original, which for me is one of the last great big band records that applied an original vision to the big band instrumentation in a traditional manner (Archie Shepp's Attica Blues on Impulse! is, at times, another one). And that one tune, the big band version of "Impact", is one of the missing and/or direct links between "spiritual jazz" (uck, I hate that term even though I understand it completely...) & broken-beat/etc dance music. Yeah, I'll be getting this one. Great music trumps weird sound (and the Impact album is indeed very weird in sound quality) every time. Especially when you can dance like hell to it!
  13. Very much looking forward to the Floys Smith follow-up! This is a great series of articles, shining some much-needed new light on the "conventional wisdom", which by now has gotten a little too narrow to really do anybody any good. That so much of it comes from people who were actual participants rather than latter-day "historians" and such who only have "found evidence" with which to draw their own conclusions is the really nice part afaic.

  15. Again. Even with the latest episode of Bats Gone Wild (traction beginning to form, hopefully?), again, the story for me is Ogando.

  17. I had a look at it. It's Gary Bartz & the Holland/DeJohnette/Airto rhythm section, with Chick & Jarrett both are on Rhodes. Excellent video & sound quality.
  18. It's official, at least for a little while - Endy Chavez has bumped Julio Bourbon, not just from his gig, but from the majors. http://sportsblogs.star-telegram.com/foul_territory/2011/06/rangers-option-julio-borbon-to-triple-a.html The story of Chavez' return from severe, possibly career-ending, injury, not just to the bigs, but to some pretty impressive production (again, to this point) is one of those things that just make you feel good in general.

  20. Miami needs to save the attitude for after the plays get made, not before.
