Just did a quick 1-2 minute scan, think I heard Milt Buckner on one? Maybe something with Gatemouth, a Black & Blue side? Also know I heard a big band version of Freddie's "Blues For Duane", which...how many can there be, right? So, delighted to find an unknown-to-me Ernie Wilkins live record with a delightfully varied personnel. Maybe Mongo on #1? The rest, I'll get to, promise. January is crowded as fuck with life shit, but that's my problem!

Maybe a movie about a complicated relationship has more appeal for people whose real life hasn't provided them with very many complicated relationships and it's kind of compelling to see a story about one up on the big screen? Or maybe to those who have had so many that they're just numb to it all by now? Maybe? What I might get a kick out of is Louis Armstrong making a Dolemite movie! Or Chris Rock doing a Louis Armstrong movie with Bing Crosby!! Or anything (including music!!!!!!!!!) with both facts AND truth and NO assumption-based agenda!!! Comedy so funny you'll forget how to laugh!!!!

This last one is probably the "drug" version, but the tale about him keeping the orchestra waiting doesn't hold up because those tracks were almost certainly done before Marvin came in for vocal tracks. Plus, what common wisdom has as being the original album completed takes are the ones that are the more conventionally sung ones. None of them are particularly adventurous. Marvin certainly has plenty of legends around him, and that one about being holed up in the bathroom while the band waited well could have happened at some session (particularly further into the 70s) but legend is not fact. Still, that particular takes has fascinated me just because for whatever reason, he is more or less defenseless against whatever was knocking him out (and it may not have been substances, it might have been real depression or some other mental thing). It's kinda like the Bird "Lover Man" date, nothing but reflexes. But such reflexes they are! Marvin knew about mental issues...

David Ritz's bio tells that Gaye would work on some of those tracks with a borderline obsession over the years in a quest for perfection, thus the totally different t performances that are available. Gaye was a true genius when it came to creating multiple layers and levels using his own voice. Vulnerable is not his best album, but it is still an essential one imo. This one might be the ultimate, though:

The studio version is an interesting listen for the rhythm section, a lot of subtle details there. But the TV version has SO many shouts, it's pretty viscerally overwhelming. So I'm glad we have both.

Why would music be interesting? This is a movie about a person.

Masterful oral encounters!?!?!? Interesting entity, whose records often seemed like they didn't tell the whole story. Later years began to reveal the fuller breadth of his skills. RIP, and enjoy the next world as much as you did this one, you and Eddie both!
