  1. The ship will right itself and return to an even keel. Messengers from 1954 up to 1964 or so are indispensable. Indispensable. And not everybody likes Max post-Clifford, especially once the Civil Rights material begins. You're not hearing it here, but they are out there. Personally I think they're crazy and/or deaf, but...just sayin', they're out there, you'd be surprised.
  2. Blakey w/Wayne & Blakey w/Lee are imprint music for me. Especially with both of them in the same band. Max with both Cliffords are as well Max with Billy is pretty new soul-birthing for me. Some musics just create a new heart in me, renew a right spirit within me. And Max/Billy was one of those musics. One of them. Now, when it comes to overall output, yeah, Max, hands down, because Max did ALL kinds of badass shit, and Blakey pretty much did the Messengers, where some bands were significantly better than others. And pre-Messenger Blakey is good, really good, but these days is not really considered in the general conversation.

  6. Up for air. Spotify has some of this stuff, and I 'm getting a buzz just listening to Marshall Royal lead the section
  7. No preference, and on any given Sunday, it will depend what I'm wanting as to which one I reach for. In both cases, they're known quantities, and so are their records. Although - I never reach for a Max record to hear Cecil Bridgewater. But one good Billy Harper makes up for that, and then some.

I love how they give Karen Krog "Walking Woman" as walk-on music, and walk on she does! Oh, look at this! Carla Bley – Walking Woman ( 1Pro-CDR ) Necromancer Regular Reissue .NRR-CD20161 – DiscJapan Oh, and this! Carla Bley (nga.gov)

surely more exists than this one bit? https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=video&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiK_YrLiqv5AhWpj2oFHSx3ATEQtwJ6BAgLEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DffeGOCMJsv8&usg=AOvVaw2MSDE6ePOUxRrQ5bBP0NOA
  11. I loved that book. Lots of detail told very obliquely. And things still left unspoken. A prefect parallel to Bley's playing imo.

  14. Spilling the tea while stirring the soup, these metaphors are just becoming more delightful right before our very eyes!
  15. But even later Bley has many different angles. His Steeplechase output is mostly standards and other tunes and is just full of rompiness. He could pretty much do what he wanted and/or whatever the producer wanted to pay for (like, I know that ECM would not want a Steeplechase record, or vice-versa), and do it well and sincerely. The guy put in a lot of dues in a lot of places doing a lot of things.
  16. Hmmm... If nothing else, Bop-Be is some of the finest Dewey on record, imo. I've tried to be a Dewey completist, and I'm ok saying that some of those Jarrett records have some of the better Dewey out there. Not all of them, but some.
  17. I don't see how one casually tosses aside all that Dewey....
  18. Dr. Belsidus Presents The Quarantined Collabos Vol. 1 It's a 2021 David Boykin joint, SHM 025. He's making beats and incorporating spoken work artists. Pretty interesting.
  19. I've kept any Jarrett records that have Dewey, which is many. And a few with Garbarek. And the first 2 or 3 trio records because some of the songs were good. But for sure, Paul Bley, of course, it's not even close.
  20. The Bolcom thing is ok, but the Albright thing, with it's mostly quiet scurrying about and really well integrated tape/electronics is something I wish I had gotten into back in the days of leisurely tripping with records. It's like that.
