  1. That record has escaped my attention! Warren Smith has been prolific over the years, but he's one of these "hiding in plain sight" type of guys. Seek and ye shall find! Herb Bushler was on a LOT of records in the 70s...no idea where he went. He played a lot of electric at a time where not that mayny jazz players did. Jack Jeffers seems to have worked mostly as a section player, but he's another on who turns up on a fair number of records in that capacity. Same thing with Al Gibbons. It seems like this group of players was at least in part floating in the same orbit as Gil Evans' early-mid 70s bands. Heady times, heady band.

It's her song, she wrote it. Looks like Vanessa Williams covered it a few years later as well. But that would have been after Chico did it (even if it was left unreleased).

Yeah, there's no composer credits given anywhere that I can see on Discogs.

So did you already know that this was a Patti Austin song?

How many Patti Austin records y'all got? Me, I got none, at least that I know of.
  7. At these prices, no wonder!
  8. I like a well-triangulated trio of any instrumentation...at least that gets them in the door. But as well triangulated as Evans' post LaFaro trios were...I don't connect. Oh well. But The 3 Sounds, or the classic Cecil Taylor Units, or even a Louis Armstrong- Earl Hines duet (because don't kid yourself, Earl Hines was really two people), a good trio skillfully triangulated is a very unique truth. Architecture matters!
  9. The lost Button Cummings solo project! Where the hell did you find that?!?!?!?
  10. Helen Humes' later vocals got more sex in them than candy got sugar. Talk about a twinkle!

I have, through using available technology. Once I did, that, though, I wondered about what song that was, because it sounded very much "contemporary" (in terms of that time). I was more than a little surprised to find out that it was a Patti Austin original! Since I "cheated", though, I will not reveal the name of the band/leader/album title. I would be interested in finding out how that song engaged the leader to record it. One would not associate him with looking for CTI records to pick a cover tune, but then again, a lot of musicians (myself included) relish a good singer singing a good song, and this is certainly that. I've come to learn that Patti Austin is kind of a "musician's singer", actually! As an aside, let me say that one can get lost in India without having access to some good navigation skill.
  12. It turns out that not everybody does!
  13. Ok, the formatting looks fine on my PC, but is totally jacked up on my Android phone. So...some coding clash, about which, again, I know nothing.
  14. Rita Rudner loves you!!!
  15. I don't know enough about HTML (or whatever code it is) but it's not showing up gone for at least some people. It's not "between the lines" of the borders, it goes out to like double the ordinary with of other posts. And the parts that are outside are unreadable, or almost unreadable. I wish advise you about fixing it, but I really have no idea About posts merging, though, that I can help with. Just wait about 10 minutes between posts. If you piggyback one right after the other, the software will merge them, that's just what it's programmed to do

I wonder who in this band was paying attention to Patti Austin? I shouldn't be surprised, but I guess I am?

  20. A clusterfuck of formatting issues, if nothing else!
  21. DeJohnette worked well with Evans, at least the first time.
  22. Whatever stories get told, they go through "them". Business is always one extra layer. Or barrier, as the case may be.
