  1. Yeah, "they". "They" are still here.
  2. Or... As long as we're talking about parallel universes... let's imagine one in which a business structure exists inside a culture that would even begin to consider employing the person of Charles Mingus as we know him...and one in which he would be enthusiastic about engaging. This is the problem with the narrative of jazz changing to an all-inclusive, kumbaya world in which we all love Louis and everybody because really, we're all the same and because of that, their story is our story. No we're not and no it's not. Let's start there and then see what happens.
  3. genuinely creepy...and an unaccredited score by Pete Rugolo, which is usually not a contributing factor except when "Artistry In bolero" is used - in two versions, and at full length - to accentuate the creepiness.
  4. I think his "always work" impulses drove him into the Marines, not the other way around. But I doubt that his Marine experience did anything to cause him to reconsider... Mingus was the rebellious son of a hardass ex-Army sergeant, so do the math on that one...
  5. I saw a Tyner/Hubbard quartet with ? and Al Foster(?) ca. 1982 and it was an inspired evening.
  6. TV needs help too. I got fifty banillion stations and all the "new " shows are either the old shows perved out or else they OD on irony. Hell, society needs help. We're all hoping for the 20th century to somehow pick back up again in some form or fashion. Ain't gonna happen and time's a-waistin'. Oliver Nelson was a Marine. Charles Mingus wasn't.
  7. Help? As in euthanasia?
  8. Business is almost by definition a trailing indicator. "Art", not so much.
  9. TV is a trailing indicator. Jazz today is too, but then, not much.

  16. Clownshow gonna clownshow.
  17. What is getting me about these four discs is that the horns generate very little motion (and what there is, is slow motion), but Lindberg and DeJohnette constantly keep it all moving ahead by occupying the spaces in an absolutely perfect/appropriate fashion. The combination of discipline, intuition, and spontaneity they draw on is remarkable, imo.
