  1. No, I think he was crazy to begin with and that was just the place he landed.
  2. Because this label is ostensibly legitimately licensing the radio broadcast itself for the presumably legitimate owners of the same. That was the story behind their last release, and although I was skeptical, no proof otherwise was or has been offered. If you have evidence to the contrary, please speak up! I'm for unions, still and all. but not stupid unions, not thuggish unions, not fascistic unions. But that because of stupid, thuggish, and fascistic, not because of unions. As for 401k vs pension...I wish we all still had pensions. this whole thing about your retirement being held hostage by the whims of the stock market is not something I'm really enjoying at age 64.5, nor was I at age 52. Then again, in a culture where the "disrupter" gets investors rabidly horny and "growth" is the only consideration of "value", any notions of hoping for predictability and stability are quaint, archaic, even.
  3. I really don't need to see anything about Doug Jones and Jeff Sessions in this thread. I don't think he overreacted at all, but the question is, do we need to see lengthy verbatim transcripts of his opinions here, on this thread. A link, along with some independent thought from a poster is always going to be a better way to go, if we're going to go at all. It's not about who's right or wrong, it's about having the personal discipline to post appropriately within the already looser-than-usual confines of this thread in this forum.

  5. So did you go on ahead and walk across? Because that's what it was there for to do. Still is. Walk across to the other side. I swear to god, for me, today, this is the greatest most fine recorded music ever. Square business.
  6. This set is not in any way new to CD: http://www.plosin.com/MilesAhead/Covers.aspx?id=Vienna71-2 http://www.plosin.com/MilesAhead/Covers.aspx?id=Vienna71-3 Not the best, I'd say. JMY v 2 has earlier three tracks from the Fillmore that are AMAZING!!! The Vienna tracks are not amazing. They're good, but Ndugu was young and perhaps not ready for this gig. He's solid, but not much more.
  7. Need this on CD because having to get up to turn the record ove required more delayed gratification than I can muster at this time in these days. Damn are those two of the great tenor records, the Von Freeman Nessas. If you love tenor and don't have these, hey - gap identified. Same thing for if you like music, or just life, period, these are records that willget you through and up out of anything. They're doing it for me right now, and they can do them for you too, no doubt. Von Freeman says those things that are true and make you feel good about them being true. He was a healer, this I do believe, and these are healing records.
  8. I had a copy of the Japanese Bomba CD, but I went ahead and bought a Nessa CD, because Bomba is Bomaa, but Nessa is DA'BOMB!!!!!!
  9. Here's a band that's really saying something.

It's got the right label! Why do I get the impression that this Paul Horn guy was a bit of a businessman as well as a bit of a musician? And how will I know when to tell the difference? Of should I?
  11. Hopefully the Big Ears people are taking notes about how to do something like this... More than happy to do it, you're welcome! Bang On A Can is very much a "brand" by now, and some of the stuff they bring is sorta same-y to me, style over substance, feeling over content. But only some. A lot of it is every bit as good as you want it to be. And on occasion, better! Hey, what good is a brand of you don't have product, right? But their QC is still pretty damn high-level. I have become a fan of sorts the last few years and was delighted to find out about this "festival" in advance, as opposed to the last one, which I didn't find out about until there was, like, 10 minutes left of it.

yeah, sometimes I think there's a hotbed of musical-intelligence incest going on there. Sometimes. Like that guy who came on talking about how Wayne Shorter was defective because his voice-leading was deficient. I mean, sorry, but that a sign that those recessive genes are taking hold and mounting an assault.
  14. That take on the Rzewski piece was intense. Incorporates the visual of ritual with the science of...science. Just reinforces my refusal to believe in "magic"...
  15. I was not readily familiar with her, but yeah, THAT!

I think his system is not really relevant to anything other than himself, to be honest. Sounds like mid-50's Sonny played with Harold Land intonation. I do find his phrasing interesting, but his harmony on this cut is not in the least bit "innovative" or "outre".
  17. It might be going a little long, they had an outage that was about 30-40 minutes and picked up the schedule w/o skipping anybody.
  18. Ok, I still don't get Don Byron. And I'm more than perfectly fine with that.
  19. IVA BITTOVÁ - I need to learn about her. Roscoe just finished his space. Incredibly visual, incredible sonic. And his soprano made my dog come into the room, stop in place, and do this weirdly quiet multiphonic howl that I've never heard her do before.

Haven't listened to that one for a while, but I recall liking it more than the average record of its ilk. I guess he's got some weird "system" though and can get weird about it, maybe. But I think he swings pretty well, all things considered. I don't find him irritating.

    You two still at it?
  22. It's all wrong, except for Sal. It doesn't sound or feel like anything other than irritating. The time is in some unfriendly pocket (if in a pocket at all), the tones are not holistic, everything is OBVIOUS in a way that speaks of cluelessness about meaning, it's just very, very irritating to me. Just finished: Not irritating. Also not a lot of any number of other things as well, but not irritating.

So wait, I can has classic proto-new-age Epic records for Paul Horn and Paul Winter? Even if I don't like them I can still has them, correct? How many other Epic Paul records might there be waiting my discerning gaze of glazed disinterest?
