Virus shortages and your impressions.

No problem getting it here either. this is all from 2018, so...not exactly "breaking news"... https://www.foodrepublic.com/2018/01/04/rotten-netflix/ https://www.axios.com/trump-trade-war-china-garlic-farming-tariffs-36b00ce2-9143-4c55-860a-a90d78a65e9e.html https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/01/12/gilroy-garlic-giant-disputes-netflix-series-calling-business-rotten/ Oh, look, 2011! https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2011/3/11/955316/- -
damn near impossible for me to hear this as "Fusion", it's just badass hi-level music!

I'ver got no complaints about the way those Joe records sound, but it sounds like some do. Just pointing out the they sound right to me, not off, what I think the combination of that player in that band in that room sounded like on real time.
-
It does sound great, precisely because it is so "dead". Those types of rooms (when you can find them) are always the best sounding rooms. Just saying, whatever people are hearing on those Joe VV records, room sound and player sound should be factored into it, that's all.

Two points offered for consideration: Perhaps counter-intuitively to what you think you hear on records, Joe was in no way a "loud" player. He could project his perfect tone like a motherfucker, but that is not the same as being "loud". The Vanguard is not a ll a particularly "live" sounding room. It's a small mofo that some might even consider "dead". Refer back to Sonny's VV records for proof of that.

I was gonna ask what about refills, but see now that this is not a standalone product, but is instead part of a science magazine series: https://party-channel.com/en/archives/24948 https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/NEOBK-2453544 https://otonanokagaku.net/english/

I love them both. Seems that they hit the stores within a few months of each other(?) and it was, like, ah, Joe's BACK!

COVID-19 2.0: No Politics edition
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It seems that there's still not a clear/conclusive view on that: https://www.idse.net/Covid-19/Article/03-20/New-Guidelines-Released-for-Managing-COVID-19-Patients/57722 on the one hand: “Traditionally, there’s been an association between using systemic corticosteroids and higher risk of death in patients with viral pneumonia, but this association is based on observational studies, which may be confounded by the fact that sicker patients tend to receive corticosteroids,” Dr. Alhazzani explained. “Very limited data” from COVID-19 patients, as well as data from SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) also indicate treatment with systemic corticosteroids may cause harm. “Because of the limitations of the data and because we’re not sure what the effect of systemic steroid treatment is in COVID-19 patients, we issued a weak recommendation not to use systemic corticosteroids in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia,” he said. but on the other hand: At the same time, there is a “decent” amount of indirect evidence from randomized controlled trials in the general critically ill population with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) that has consistently shown use of systemic corticosteroids reduces the duration of mechanical ventilation and death. “In addition, a recent observational study from China suggested that the use of corticosteroids may reduce mortality in COVID-19 patients with ARDS, so we issued a weak recommendation that in those with moderate to severe ARDS and COVID-19, you might consider using systemic corticosteroids,” Dr. Alhazzani said. I would certainly err on the side of caution, if I had a choice! -
Yes. I went to an Aebersold clinic in 1978, and both Joe and Soph had been doing them, although neither were at this one. Darling, I have no idea. But I think I've heard tahat Joe was discovering the utility of the college circuit through these clinics and would book a gig like this one (the one at Wichita, where there might have even been a JA clinic) with players like Soph & Darling, who he had met and who could play, and who could also make the gig not too pricey.

When you do, ask them to also add the Cannonball record with Cleanhead. It was on Riverside, but you know, this being a Cherry Red thing and all....

Reflections on music in the time of COVID
JSngry replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm trying really hard to make the numbers crunch to where we can afford to do that...wish me luck, because them numbers is trying equally really hard to crunch back, especially when they're asking for renewals for the next season, which may or may not run up against some, none, or all of the same factors that this one did... god, i need to clean my glasses, i read that as Jackie Vernon.... -
I might not be remembering this correctly, but I think this trio might have sprung forth out of the earlier (earliest?( incarnation of the Jamey Aebersold jazz clinics.

It was a decca thing: see, jazz musicians jamming with beakers and test tubes and shit, colorful liquids aplenty, très moderne, as they say. Not with Art Famer, not yet, anyway. But with a few others, yes.

Eicher being almost 77, and life being what it is, "autumnal" might also be an apt description for the label as well as the drummer/leaders. Time will tell, but I'm with you on this. I've bought - and enjoyed - more ECM records in the past 2-3 years than I had in the last 2-3 decades combined. Perhaps I, too, am becoming autumnal?!?!?!? Time will tell!
