I think I first heard/heard of Odean when I heard him w/Max at Carnegie Hall, Newport/New York, 1980. Was expecting Billy Harper, was momentarily disappointed, but that was, like micro-momentarily. Next heard him on Almost Like Me, which was a bit of a mindfuck, between him and Gerald Veasley. I've been an advocate ever since. Catalyst, though, was never really on my radar for whatever reason. The records were in the stores, but they never got radio play or word of mouth around here. Bought the 32 Jazz(?) collection, and kinda see why...but hindsight is 20/20, as it is with The Visitors. Not standing out is not the same as not being there, lesson(s) learned. The Ellington/Brown is a stone gas, bought that one as soon as it was in the stores, iirc. Strongly, urgently recommended, as are any later Ellington "piano-centric" records. Live At The Whitney, that's another one. But this duet with Brown is something else, very, very open playing there. Apart from that, remember when ECM had....edge?

I'd like to posit the possibility that Trane would not have had to have made an either/or choice when playing with Monk that night. Although there were certainly elements of the "Free" in the production of his sound and in the "bar-less"-ness of his phrasing, there was still a great deal of attention overall to structure and form. I don't think there would have been any real need for him to necessarily change what he was playing that night, just a consciousness about where to put it in/over Monk's forms. And really, there may not have been the need to do even that. Coltrane by that time had deeply internalized so much music...

The way I avoid duplicates is by looking at my "to listen to" rack before ordering. And that's mostly for classical. When I hear a jazz record once, I tend to remember hearing it by various means (cover, lead artist, good soloist, catchy tune, something). I might not remember the vivid details (especially if there aren't any...), but somehow, if you show me a record, I can usually tell you if I've heard it or not, and then the next question is do I want to buy it if I haven't. That's one of the reasons I buy less jazz (or buy jazz less frequently, let's put it that way) - if I want to hear it, I know where it is, and there's getting to be less and less that I don't know where it is. I screw up every once in a while, but that's painless compared to manually entering all that data into ANYTHING.

I really like John Tchicai, although I will probably never learn to spell "Tchicai" by memory. No matter, that guy could play.

I rely on my memory, as well as the luck of the random look. Probably not gonna work for everybody, that.

Does/Has Eddie Gomez ever talk(ed) about his association with Giuseppe Logan?

A wonderful capturing of a brief, brilliant moment.

We've been entirely focused on grocery orders (this curbside pickup thing is FANTASTIC once you get the rhythm of the order/pickup window thing relatively down) and cooking in during this time, but it seems that carry-out & delivery options are remaining viable enough in this area. At least I'm not hearing anything on Nextdoor, which is Complaint Central For Chronically Crotchety Caucasians. OTOH - Plano seems like it has some kind of restaurant every 6.5 feet, and I'm pretty sure that not all of them are set up for rigorous carry out, and definitely not drive-through. I don't know, to be honest. I'm telecommuting, and not making it out to any commercial area for anything but targeted, outcome-certain activity. Not out of fear or any legal mandate, but just common sense - eliminating as many variables as possible. At this time, Internet makes all this incredibly non-disruptive. Speaking of groceries, though, if you live in an area where produce is limited in your "mainstream" markets, check H-Mart, if you have one. Just sayin'...List in advance, protection on, go, stock up (no hoarding, please, a 15 lb. bag of rice should last you a good long time)), pay, go home, and sani up. That goes for the food as well as your person. You should do this for a trip to any grocery store. Not being paranoid, just eliminating as many variables as possible.

What is "YLEM"?

I really don't hear a major difference in quality between the three he added and the three he didn't.

LOVE it when people come to play and actually do!!!!

Sometime more interesting than others, but capable of being very interesting often enough to keep me on the lookout for his stuff. Check this one out. Not THAT far removed from, say, George Lewis. Not "the same thing", but still...ideas are in everybody's air, too, not just viruses

Exactly. Don't ever mind it. Just can't love it. Brenda has prepared it like any other fresh green, boiled it in a pot full of onions, spices, and bacon. It's delicious once or twice. But inevitably, when walking past it on the fresh greens section in the grocery, we never keep picking it. I feel sorry for kale, really I do. It never hurt anybody.

Feisty!

I never have difficulty beginning to love kale. It's sustaining the love that appears impossible.

I feel sorry for kale. It always does its best to be loved, I mean, I know its got a good heart and a pure spirit and SHOULD be loved. and I try to love it, I mean, I really. REALLY try. But ya' know, you can make yourself do a lot of things, but you can't make yourself love.

Always seemed to be a faithful servant of the music. RIP.
