  1. If we're going to listen to a Joanne Brackeen record, it might as well be Ancient Dynasty.

    Al Cohn

He was one of the definitive Woody Herman drummers, but after that...different strokes, etc.
  3. If nothing else, we now have three plausible options - and one perhaps likely - as to who the otherworldly (like, literally) "PER-FEE-DEE-AH" voice is. That's been a mystery to me for 40+ years and I just assumed it was going to stay that way forever. But now... Anybody who tells you that that voice is the FIRST thing you never forget about that record is either lying or else played Side 2 first.
  4. Ok, bulk of the post in question has been deleted. E2E paywalls suck, though. Just sayin'...

I'd also heard that Bothwell as a section leader was kind of a dick in a way up with which Cohn got fed. That's sort of an inference on my part, though. In fairness to Bothwell, though, the Raeburn sections which he led were really, really good. Not that he wasn't that kind of a dick, just saying, it got results for as long as it did.

Those Xanadu albums are superb, all of them. I like the Concords well enough, but, like all that label's output, they seem to have been run through some musical/sonic equivalent of Woody Allen's mom's famed "flavor remover". I'll blame the label, the playing is generally just fine, but the records themselves are lacking in grab to my ears. Not so the Xanadu's Don Schlitten was always good to give the grab.

I'd like to know the details of the disagreement between him and Johnny Bothwell.
  8. I dunno man, I think those Elvis movies are ripe for 21st century revision, and Carlos Santana is just the guy to do it, make that shit relevant again. Here's Speedway:
  9. I think Carlos Santana & Amy Schumer could made the definitive Viva Las Vegas.
  10. Good Move and Accent On The Blues!!!!! and Visions, if you roll that way!
  11. Still, those Elvis movies need to be remade with a contemporary rock star. Like, do Change of Habit with J-Lo doing the MTM part. or G.I. Blues. Yeah, do G.I. Blues.
  12. I'd love to see him do Waikiki Hockey!
  13. I think that Santana's wasted his life by not remaking all of the Elvis movies.
  14. Don't think so. I still like bossa on an elevator.
  15. Remind me to take my iPod to my next dentist visit. They can't compete with this.
  16. where the hell do you see a record like that?
  17. I've more or less abandoned cursive, except for signatures, for the last...30 or so years. I failed to see the purpose, and still don't see it. Leave it to the calligraphers (who are wonderful!! My dad, who had beautiful old-school longhand (he was born in 1918) didn't like it, but I told him, hey, you complain about how you can barely read my writing, you can read this, right? He laughed and said, ok, ok. But I still think he didn't like it. Then again, was would manually balance his checkbook down to the penny. Weekly. Pity the bank if the statement came and their balances didn't match his! That's that old-school skill set. I've abandoned a lot of it, but still....there was a reason for it, and we lose something when we let it go, another level of analog consciousness. Here's hoping it's gonna be ok.
  18. Based on these examples, Dolphy had very legible handwriting, imo.
  19. Listening to this now, easy to make the whole set in one day. A really nice book (not a booklet!) comes with it, and the sound is FANTASTIC. I've had various "aftermarket" versions of this material over the years, as well as a few Panart LPs picked up at a Cuban grocery store (where else?) and this is the best sounding issue of this material, period. not even close. Hopefully more issues from the Panart catalog are forthcoming. As useful as the other table scraps (even the original LPs weren't this good sounding) have been for this hungry boy, this is the real full-course meal, served at the adult table. Ain't nothing like the real thing.
  20. That stuff travelled...
  21. This is not a copy of the Charlie Parker Records LP of the same name? This one's a dance date, iirc, not at Birdland.
  22. That's a wonderful remembrance. I have to think that having firsthand exposure to a creative music environment where new things were happening potentially daily, real new things, is about the most stimulating life experience one can have that doesn't involve falling in love with another person. And as far as changing your life forever, maybe those two things are equal.
