What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
JSngry replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
whoa -
Three selections were included on The Kenton Era - "Interlude", "Machito", and "Elegy For Alto". Recording balances are at times off just a bit, but the band freaking kills. The trombone section in particular is all-in gonzo. And that "MAchito" is just tooooooo fucking good. If those were the only three Kenton cuts I'd ever heard, I could easily believe all the hype. Of course, they're not, and of course I can't. but still... Looks like you can also hear the whole concert here: http://allthingskenton.com/table_of_contents/adventures/progressive-jazz/hollywood-bowl/

CD1, all Gabrieli. This does NOT make for good reading music, or any other secondary purpose. I think they heard time differently back then than we do today, and that's disorienting. Disorienting, but quite fascination! -
You rascal, you...

Not in 1948!

Wow! Here's to that scenario replicating itself all over the world!

Charles Mingus, The Complete Town Hall Concert
JSngry replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
Yeah, but that's life drama. The concert itself just sounds really bizarre, with copyists onstage preparing parts as the band played, solos being called on the spot, stagehands closing the final curtain while the band was still playing...it sounds like something you would never forget seeing. -

This is one of those events that you wish a film crew had been present for, right? I think it would be one of the greatest pieces of unintentional performance art in the history of unintentional performance art. -
Is it the same store with the same stock as before? I can think of a few places I wish that could happen to!
-
Hey, Pacific Time.

What am I waiting for? Other than a desire to hear it?

Well, this copy appears to have been played a lot...but it still sounds good overall. The music (St. Luke's Passion is the basic English title) is interesting, a lot of choral work that is densely textured and quiet in dynamics...very "pulls you in", at least for me. I don't know a WHOLE lot of Penderecki. I became aware of his in college, when the chairman of the Composition department was a big advocate/booster.I do know that at some point he became a lot more "traditional" for wome/whatever reason. I find this period of his work to be not particularly compelling, but I'm not exactly an "informed listener" either. Some day, maybe? This was the "big" piece back in the day, apparently, the one that when you said his name, this is what came to mind.

Dutch Phillips. I think I'd go see this performed live, if ever it was.

Maybe it's jsut for looking, but I went back to a Half-Price I hit good about a month ago and found more stuff this time. Again "great" or not, we'll see. But at these prices, it's big fun to just have the chance to find out! Teo's apparently involved here. Because my appetite for cynicism continues unabated. Yeah, sure! with Philadelphia Joe Jones no less. with Johnny Pacheco!!! or so says the bootleg! ...and suddenly it dawns on me that thre was "classical music" before Bach... The recent Sauter-Finegan discussion did not go without impact. No expectations of greatness, but guys like this very often find a way to get their shit in there somehow, somewhere. So let's see. arranged by Onzy Matthews!?!?!?!?! Sister Rosetta in 1961 produced by Creed Taylor, who knew? Again, Verve - The Bottomless Pit Of Who Knew? Been having good luck with this vintage of Turnabout things, onward until proven otherwise! Jack Jones LPs abound in the used bins here, but I don't need all that. What made this one look like it needed to follow me home was the tune selection (in spite of YuckPerople), especially "Lush Life". Sinatra backed out, Jack Jones did not, one more reason why I don't mind buying the occasioanl Jack Jones record. Skills aplenty all over the place. This seems to have a whill of fuckyouFrank, maybe to it. If so, hey, Jack Jones, game on. Geeeeezzzus, there are some people on this record! 2 LPs for $2.00. Vinyl looks totally clean. No way not to buy it. All this music for $54.00 + tax,

Stan Getz Quartet at the Village Gate November 26th, 1961
JSngry replied to soulpope's topic in New Releases
Anybody got a set list? Did Kuhn contribute anything to the band's book, or is this likely standards and such? Or maybe quartet versions of some of the things from Focus? Was Kuhn with Getz before or after he was with Coltrane? I'm thinking after? -
Those 3 Hubbard LPs are REALLY good if you don't have/want the Keystone Bop CDs.

Dammit, I have the Bradford/Gjerstad. Haven't had it long enough or listened to it enough to have it internalized, though. Damn good record, thanks for including it here!

I found this for $2.00 yesterday! Teo kept himself busy, eh? http://www.furious.com/perfect/cassavetes-faces.html
