  1. inez andrews 1963-1973 some posthumous blogosphere compilation of strong stuff, including some Andrewettes sides.
  2. and then it was over.
  3. Check the label. If it doesn't say STEREO under the trident, it's probably mono. And of course, the PR vs. PRST prefix. But jackets themselves can occasionally get cronky about that, they used what they had sometimes, and it didn't always line up. Not often, but once in a while.
  4. Last I heard, Big Al was very active in mission work for/through his church.
  5. The Paste link gives you a full cut. Wolfgang's, when they first started, used to offer downloading by show, 5-6 bucks a pop, something like that. But then something happened, squawking about royalties or some such, and now they charge you a flat fee for unlimited downloads. I think I got what I wanted under the old model (Cecil Taylor w/Bill Barron at Newport, Maynard's band with Wayne at Newport - a KILLER set, btw - , maybe a few other things). They come by the tapes legit. Their royalty payments are sketchy, though, I think that's where they had to pull back from "selling" and pivot to "offering unlimited access". Anyway, the shit is there.
  6. Is it mono? That's what they did later on with a lot of mono records. fwiw, that record did get a mono release: https://www.discogs.com/Chuck-Wayne-Morning-Mist/release/8255650
  7. hey! James Moody, let's never forget James Moody, hey! even with the top of his head Zaprudered off, hey! HEY! IT'S JAMES MOODY!
  8. No need to wonder, or to guess: https://www.wolfgangs.com/music/max-roach-quintet/audio/20020013-50737.html?tid=4850233 https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2011/07/max-roach-quintet-nommo.html
  9. Right, I got that. But then he linked that picture that I had posted in the Post-A-Pic thread, where he also suggested that it might be political. I just don't get what he's talking about. Does Brexit wear Sun Ra shades?
  10. How is that political? It's George Washington wearing a Jughead hat and Sun Ra shades.
  11. No love for this distillation of all that this essence?
  12. I don't get it? Was it Harry Allen who came out being cute by playing Getz and Zoot down to the most minute nuance? Or was it some Scottish guy, Tommy somebody or another?
  13. That band is not to be confused with this one: anyway...I get interested in DG LPs that were never issued in America, it's like the stuff on the menu at certain Chinese restaurants where it's in Chinese-only and when you ask what it means, they just say "not for you", not in a mean way, just...not for you. But this IS for me, this Amati-Berlin Ensemble, that shit be ROARIN'. and it's another one of those records that makes me realize how much of my life I've wasted by not diving all in to Bartok when I still had enough time in front of me to do something with it other than just marvel. Can't say nobody told me, but, you know, other things got in what could have been that space and generally, no regrets. But Bartok, now, yes, big regrets. But - onward! Any way, fine record!
  14. I think it's been established that Dolphy died of complications from unrecognized/untreated diabetes. Coles left early in the tour due to a stomach ulcer (iirc?). Not seeing how any of that falls to/on Mingus.
  15. The first I heard of him was through British press, JJI. I thought he was Scottish. Am I thinking about somebody else, some young "cute" playing retro guy?
  16. Harry Allen is American? Who knew? I just assumed he was British.
  17. ...and I think to myself....what a wonderful world!
  18. That wasn't Mingus, that was George Wein.
  19. When did Barry Harris do Lucy? I'm just familiar with the Hilton Ruiz/Jerry Gonzalez version from 1982.
  20. Other than driving them like hell once they started playing, how did Mingus himself "wear his musicians out" on that tour? Serious question.
  21. Ah, to be 17 again...
