  1. So, basically, Crown just didn't give a damn how they sold those records, they just put them out there for you to pick up with your groceries, tires, and/or laxatives.
  2. No doubt about any of the talent involved. What bugs me is the sense that said talent is "role-playing" to a certain extent, maybe(?) to be more "friendly" because they have a "message" to convey. But my feeling about that is what it's always been - if you show people only, say, 25% of what you are in hopes that you can then get them on board with the other 75%, forget about that, THAT ain't happening. And it doesn't scare anybody that it needs to scare.
  3. I wasn't "wowed" by the sound of the record either. Chesky was one of those labels that hyped their sound, and also one that left me feeling like, oh, if this is what "great sound" sounds like, uh...maybe it's not for me. Probably "accurate" as fuck, but unless your natural live-music experience is inside a then-modern recording studio, not particularly appealing. Great playing, though, I worked around it. But The Real McCoy Pt. 2 , it ain't that.
  4. BIRTHDAY GIRL http://heightfiveseven.com/?p=3392 Happy Birthday!
  5. Say what you will about Pandora, but this station continues to bring good music. I haven't really "liked" anything on the channel except the few Piston selections that came in the first week or two, but now, three years later, there's fun stuff coming in almost every time. Taht's unlike any of the Pandora jazz stations where if you leave it on for long enough, you end up with either Wes Montgomery or Art Blakey. Go figure THAT one....
  6. Well, hell, what do you expect?
  7. I'm enjoying this record right now. It's definitely "nostalgic" but not in a destructive way. Everybody's older now, and I'm willing to say that Alex Foster might have been staying off the radar, but not off the horn! Also, I looked for but could not find the thread where somebody had a Gil Evans track that they couldn't identify the tune. It's here, "LL Funk". If you liked it then, you'll like it now. I did, and I do.
  8. You might well be right. It was decades ago, and I lost contact with her once she went out with John Mellancamp.
  9. Did you go hear him with/at the orchestra? A program of Hannibal and Sibelius is not an opportunity one gets every day!
  10. YEAH!!!!!!
  11. Hey, if he's onboard with moving out, count your blessings. And yes, it's hard. A connection to every moment of your life is being dissolved, in slow, if at times seemingly violent, motion. That's your dream. Accept it as the subconscious meditation that it is and let it do what it do. It's about as honest as honest can be, There will be moments of overwhelming emotion, sometimes the result of a slow-build, and sometimes totally out of nowhere. Allow them to fully cycle, they are yours. He's your dad, and he is going to die, probably sooner than later. And it's no longer hypothetical, shit is real now, and is going to only get real-er. It's a heavy thing, but just let it be that. As difficult as it is and is going to be, trying to avoid/deflect it will only diminish your humanity. When it all resolves itself, you will be glad to come out the other side of it enriched rather than diminished. Good luck, god bless, and feel free to contact me offline if/when.
  12. Stick around!
  13. Ok, who is/was Calvin Williams, an how does he show up as co-composer w/Cecil Payne on GEMA, but not on the original record? GEMA is basically the German equivalenmt of ASCAP or BMI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEMA_(German_organization) Here's what BMI has:http://repertoire.bmi.com/ListView.aspx?torow=25&fromrow=1&page=1 COMMUNION BMI Work # 236032 Total Controlled by BMI: 75% SONGWRITER/COMPOSER CURRENT AFFILIATION CAE/IPI # PAYNE CECIL BMI 40740218 WILLIAMS CALVIN NA 0 PUBLISHERS CURRENT AFFILIATION CAE/IPI # CHARLIE PARKER MUSIC CO BMI 200606429 DREAM CITY MUSIC BMI 37018895 Going further down this rabbit hole leads me do suspect that Calvin Williams got added on at some later day as part of some Aubrey Mayhew mayhem. Information to the contrary would be great!
  14. Listening now. It's good, but it sounds like a recording from the hall rather than on the stage. I very much value direct contact with Carter's voice, and this is lacking that by a degree or two. Other than that, I bet it kicked ass to be there!
  15. Oh well...i've heard it well enough to appreciate the really "as one" ensemble playing. Good enough for now.
  16. ...at which point a mono switch is too little, too late. But seriously...where is the Capitol Jazz CD of this? all I can find is Fresh Sounds, and sorry, not going there.
  17. Does Ben Dover wear Bent Fabric?
  18. Nope. Haven't for some time. Progress is not always progress.
  19. That sounds about right...your speculation that is, not my record. That record certainly does NOT sound right!
  20. This is some spunky shit!
  21. It's not a Bird tune:
