Contains the (to this point) last readily available recordings of Rollins pre-Bidge sabbatical. Very revealing, in that regardless of how much he may or may not have been thrown of by Coltrane ,(and Ornette) it shows that ultimately he took the time off because, in his words, he wasn't yet "good enough". It's humbling to think about that, and at the time it must have seemed like a perverse notion, but comparing his playing before and after, it's clear to me what he was talking about. Still, there is some "in the zone" playing here. Not all but some. Some!

It's on Spotify and You Tube. The arrangements are all on the syrupy side to one extent or the other, so there's that. But Getz never sounds disengaged, and always seems fully engaged in playing inside the chart rather than over it. I like that approach a lot.

Definitely legal and definitely any musicians' obligation to know their business (although for some reason that's a relatively decent concept). But Lion could be a bit gangsterism about publishing. He dropped Horace Parlan because of a dispute over a Ronnie Boykins tune. There's a few other things I've heard . And AFAIK, the "junkie label" era Prestige never shared publishing. Same for Savoy, etc. It was all legal, it was all accepted business practice, and too many musicians were just oblivious to any of it. But the businesses definitely enforced their advantage in an often heavy-handed manner. One should certainly understand ill-feelings decades later.And it's not just LaRocca btw, nor is it just jazz. 50% of your money is not insignificant, no matter who you are. Leverages should be fully understood and mutually exercised.

"Gangsters" is perhaps too strong, but the practice is definitely a form of legal shakedown. And arguably predatory.
