  1. HA! I'll never forget the fly ball that bounced off Canseco's coconut and into the seats for a HR! And only a few days later, he asked Kennedy to let him pitch (knuckleballs IIRC) during a blowout loss, Kennedy put him in, and Jose promptly blew out his arm...
  2. Matthew Barney Bjork Pam Dawber
  3. For sure Saturday Morning on Xanadu, though it might only be available as Japanese import. Sonny Criss Quartet feat. Wynton Kelly on Fresh Sound (originally At the Crossroads) is a very bluesy live recording, which should work if you dig the Imperial. I'm not sure about the ethics of buying Fresh Sound, though (I got this when I knew less about the label)... For a bigger ensemble, maybe Sonny's Dream: Birth of the New Cool on OJC. I'm also curious about the 32 Jazz releases...I got Crisscraft, which some (eg AMG) rate highly, but like it less than other Criss I've heard.
  4. Chris "Knuckles" Nilan Tom Thumb Olof Palme
  5. Can anyone recommend Only The Blues (w. Eldridge, on Verve)? The late lamented "clifton" (Marc Meyers) on AAJ used to rave about it...but it's OOP and hard to find unless you do downloads. I've bid on eBay, but not been willing to go high enough.
  6. Werner Klemperer Dexter Clinkscale Ben Hogan
  7. Sir Roland Hanna Plays the Music of Alec Wilder (Gitanes) A very unusual album, but good.
  8. Some others I can recommend: Sonny Stitt / Bud Powell/ J. J. Johnson (Prestige) Sonny Side Up (w. Rollins, Diz) (Verve) Sits in With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Verve) For Musicians Only (w. Diz, Getz) (Verve) I've been pretty cautious with Stitt, because he tended to record more or less the same album over and over... I really want to get Endgame Brilliance: Constellation / Tune-Up (32 Jazz), which everyone raves about, but it's causing a dilemma. It's OOP, and used copies cost a fortune on eBay. Slated for "re-release" by a European pirate firm, but I don't think I'll be comfortable going that route.
  9. Spike Jones Trent Reznor Ted Williams
  10. Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov Chuck Connors Chris Gatling
  11. Richard Roundtree Samuel L. Jackson Jerry Reed
  12. Riis evicted from Danish sports hall of fame
  13. Pulled the trigger on some old "want list" items:
  14. Another oddly non-RVGd BN: Ike Quebec Blue and Sentimental.

I like Three Trumpets, a Farmer/Byrd/Suleiman date on Prestige.
  16. I'll say Ottawa in 6 in the Finals. Mainly because I want them to win...
  17. Gee, "Mr. 60%"...who'd a thunk it? The dominos are starting to fall pretty quickly. Will they ever reach LANCE?
  18. Thanks. I've read Gleick's book. Will have to look for "Drum" (physics/math content doesn't bother me).
  19. Lawrence Marable Quartet featuring James Clay, Tenorman Hod O'Brien Trio, So That's How it Is Hank Mobley, Workout (yourmusic.com queue selection) Donald Byrd & Doug Watkins, The Transition Sessions John Jenkins, With Kenny Burrell
  20. Interesting. I'm not a physics expert, but recently read Smolin's The Trouble With Physics and can appreciate your POV...
  21. Gotta have Richard Feynman in there. Strongly recommend his autobio, Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman!...
  22. Not jazz, and I'm not a huge Sting/Police fan, but I found "King of Pain" going through my head while riding up hills this evening, and it worked...[Disclaimer: I'm a recreational cyclist with no racing ambition]
  23. They didn't... I'm going to have to think about the finals matchup a while before making a prediction.
  24. Gee, for the record, I don't see anything wrong with inline skating for fitness. I've run quite a few miles on the lake fitness trails in Minneapolis, and they seem like great sites. In my hockey days, I considered getting inline skates, but figured I'd already spent enough $ on the hockey gear, and I didn't have any convenient locations. If it's anything like hockey skates, you'll almost surely have to spend over $100 for a pair. I wouldn't be surprised if the high-end stuff got up in the $300-400 range, but that could be overkill. I'd look at shops that have some kind of in-line specialty/expertise, rather than box stores: they'll have higher-quality gear, and the employees will be way more helpful and will make sure you buy the right size .

    Concertos

I'm not familiar with Dumitrescu, because most of his recordings seem to be on CD-Rs that I never had the courage to buy. Ustvolskaya's pretty out there, though, especially if you consider her age...not just on the basis of weirdness, but on the fury of her music (given the monicker "The Lady with the Hammer").
