  1. I remember you put a gagaku selection from that on a BFT, which is the first I heard of the site. I often browse the Sublime Frequencies bandcamp page. It's fascinating, but I thus far have just listened online, afraid of winding up down another rabbit hole of recording purchases. 🙄
  2. I read that long ago. Balliett's a very good writer (for instance, I recall an excellent passage about Mingus), but I didn't agree with some of his opinions. I found his extreme dislike of hard bop kind of amusing...in that vein I also recall a brief rant about JR Montrose's ugly playing. No longer own the book, donated it to a library as part of downsizing.
  3. Finally acquired a copy of this after a long time on the wish list.
  4. That looks good! I like Koller, and recently picked up an 1800 yen Zoller Japanese reissue threefer (orig. on Enja). Can't keep up with everything...
  5. I think the original release was the first LP I (b. 1957) ever bought. That, Allman Bros. Live at Fillmore East and Grateful Dead "skull and roses" within a short interval.
  6. Any Tapscott connection (some degrees of separation allowed) for the obscure LA tenor player in #10? With a single 1996 release as leader, nothing is immediately apparent. If it's too much of a spoiler, feel free to disregard the question. 😉
  7. New reissue. Discogs doesn't yet have it listed.
  8. I finally went for this via Amazon, combining it with another (non-music) purchase. Had been bummed by the disappearance of an illusory ultra-cheap importcds "preorder" price.
  9. Thanks. If it's album covers, I'll pass. I still haven't purchased the Sun Ra album covers book, and that's a higher priority. Though this volume is attractive.
  10. We discussed this briefly on the Japanese Jazz Reissues thread. Looks to me like too much album covers, too little text, so I'd have to see more details. And shipping to US is likely to be prohibitive unless domestic vendors (Dusty Groove, etc.) elect to stock it.
  11. [Emphasis added] DG marks down some unsold BBE CDs to $9.99 after a while. In a Panglossian scenario you could get that deal. 😉, but I decided to preorder.
  12. Same here. Surprising, I thought it wasn't expected until next month. [Added] Funny thing, DG must have ordered unusually many copies. Even with all these preorders, they are still (8 PM EDT Monday) showing it in stock!
  13. What little I know about Raymond Scott pertains to electronic music. One of his pieces was included in the OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music compilation.
  14. I received the Heining today. Excellent book, well put together and in nice big print (I guess JIB know their target demographic 😅). Starting with the Barry Guy section since I've been listening to a lot of his music lately, finding it very informative. Agreed with previous comments. CDs nice though not audiophile quality. I found Heining's prose in the Introduction a tad on the precious side, but less so in the text proper.
  15. I wasn't referring to the shipper, who actually did well by me on this release, but to the likelihood of the legendary Bill Barron box ever materializing. "Far" was a mixed metaphor.
  16. Arrived today. Mosaic UPS shipping time to me is typically only 1 day.
  17. Ordered 11/5, shipping notice yesterday, shipped today, ETA tomorrow.
  18. Damn, maybe one of "The Bastards" has been reading this thread. The Waldron/Hino Reminiscent Suite CD showed as preorderable (is that a word?) today and I went for it. Perhaps the book will follow suit.
  19. Yeah, I've been trying to downsize (apart from CD buying) and coffee-table size books don't really fit into the scheme. I did order Duncan Heining's And Did Those Feet (it's en route) due to reasonable (DG) price and inclusion of 2 CDs, but don't know what I'll do with the book after reading it. 🤔
  20. Thanks for the info, looks like a terrific book. Considering overseas (to USA) shipping, I'm not likely to purchase, but will consider it if there is generous informative text / prose in addition to the album covers.
  21. It's part of the Mitropoulos box Chuck posted above, you can see it in the large pic.
  22. One of those oddly packaged box sets. Apart from the peculiar metal sleeve, it's pretty nicely designed.
  23. I'm getting mixed signals from DG on this and other BBE items. The Waldron/Hino Reminiscent Suite recording and this book (thanks, Rooster) both show as "Coming Soon", but preorder is not available. I really prefer the preorder option, because I can't count the number of times I've clicked on a DG "arrival notice" and been greeted with "Just Sold Out!" 😧
  24. New BBE J-Jazz book (large format, premium price) announced for Mar. 2024 https://bbemusic.bandcamp.com/merch/early-bird-price-ends-08-12-24-j-jazz-free-and-modern-jazz-from-japan-1954-1988-pre-order-shipping-march-1st-2024 I'd consider this if there is significant text, but AFAICT it seems to be a book of album covers.
  25. Excellent! Based on felser's response to Thom I had guessed the altoist in #4, but was too lazy to sleuth/verify and it's too early in the month for that anyway. Don't mind reading the IDs...not really spoilers because I wasn't going to get them; Elvin-ness of #2 and Dolphy-ism of #3 not enough to narrow down the candidates. FWIW I enjoy the semi-non-quasi jazz excursions. [Added] Based on Jim's ID, #4 must be this. Weirdly, that's from a recording I recently came very close to buying, but held off on because I prefer the altoist's earlier work. 🙄 In the "minimalist" area, Marion Brown collaborated with Harold Budd. I think the first recording of Budd's Bismillahi 'Rahmani 'Rrahim is on MB's Vista (a personal favorite album on which Budd performed). And Brown played on Budd's The Pavilion of Dreams album.
